Description

R. FRO-MMER. V AUTOMATIG SAFETY DEVICE FOR FIREARMS.
I 1 APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 27, 1909. {944,606.
Patented Dec. 28, 1909 IIII r UNITED 's'rA'r s PATENT OFFICE.
f "RUDOLF FROMMER. or BUDAPEST, AUSTRIA-HUNGARY.
AUTOMATIC SAFETY DEVICE FOR FIREARMS.
i 0 altwhom itma-y concern:
Be it known that 1,.1tt'boLr I :otum-zn, of 1 i8 Ktilso Soroksari ut, Budapest, Austria- IIungary, manager. subject of the King of I :ungary, have invented ceitain new and use- {11 Improvements in Automatic Safety Deices for Firearms, of which the following it a specification. ;-My invention relates 'to automatic fireatms andi hasft object to provide a St fcty device, for firearms of this clniracter. and more -1 )art1 o'ula'rly for those of the Fromlliiilc' type, in which, as is known, the breech bl k is rigidly coupled with the barrel, and when recoil'ing'isi, checked by stop pieces, anlthe feeder, after tlm shooting oil of the cartridge in the magazine, operates a cattig lever which holds the l'n'eech-block in the pen position.
My automatic safety device is distinguislied from those previously known by the fact that inthe safety position it-supports not oily the tiring devices but also the stop piece for the breech-block and the releasing lever. tlhe support of the stop piece for the breech-block has for its object to hold the breeclrlock and consequently also the barrel in the safety condition of the weapon. This ho'tling of the breech-block and barrel is of in'tportance with automatic firearms provided with percussion locks and having a sliding'barrel, because-it prevents the acfcidental Tiling off of a weapon when the same is k iocked or falls down and in other kinds of accidents. For instance, if the hammer it in the normal position and there is a cartric-ge in the chamber of the weapon,
the sliding backward of the barrel and of the breech-block (for example if the weapon should fall down) might cause the striking pin to stri re against the hammer and tire a shot; thia, however, is entirely prevented if the bret ch block and barrel are both locked. Tlie supporting of the catch lever has for its t eject to facilitate. the assembling of the part. I of the weapon, which will be further exp ained in the following.
'lwo met ods of carrying out my invention are ill istrated in the accompanying drawing in 'vhich- M Figure 1 s sows partially in section an automaticfirea' 'm of the Frommer type with my new automa .ic safety device (the latter in the released com ition) which is moved by a sp'ecial press-pi ace located on the frontrside of the grip. 'lig. 2 shows a portion of the Specification of Letters Patent.

cover plate. Fig. 1-.- is a section on the line .\-l of Fig. 2. Fig: i shows a similar weapon in which the press-piece is made integral with the automatic safety device and is arranged on the rear side of the grip:
the safety device is shown in the engaging position. Fig. 5 is .a plan view of a sto with which the safety device can be locked.
In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1- the automatic safety device is formed by a t\vo armed leve'i' l. oscillatingaround the pin 2. and controlled by the action of the spring '5; this lever in its normal position supports in a known manner the sear A and the hamn'ier Il. According to the invention this safety lever l is so arranged that. the same in its operating position supports with a. nose 4 the stop piece V for the breech-block and with a nose '5 the catch lever S of the weapon (Fig. 4).
The lever 1 is swung out by means of a press- )iece t3 arran 'ed on the front of the ri and seized with the hand, the. press-piece (3 pressed inward toward the grip and oscillates the safety lever 1, in opposition to the action of the spring 3, around the pin 2, whereby the noses 4 and 5 disengage from the portions V and S of the weapon, so that these. can operate freely and the weapon is therefore rendered unsafe.
In Fig. 4 the. press-piece S is made in one piece with the safety lever ,1, which is here shown as a single-ar1n lever, and is located at the rear side of the grip; it is therefore released by the palm of the. hand which holds.
the. weapon. The. nature of the actuation and the manner of. operation of this construction is the same as that. for the construction shown in Fig. 1.
My invention also makes possible a more convenient. at ljustnient of the cover plate than heretofore, owing to the simpler arrai'ige nent of the respective parts of the weapon, as will be seenjrom the following. The button 11 of theecatch lever S which holds the breech-block in the open position after the last cartridge has been fired, extends, as is known, beyond the cover plate 12 through the opening 13 in the same. If the cover plate 12 is adjusted on the weapon, the downward movement of the catch lever, operatedin a-known manner by a spring, is limited by the cover plate itself (see Fig. Butif the cover plate is notyet adjusted,
then the catch lever S is pressed considerably pivotally connected with the. safety levellby the pin 7. .If the grip of the weapon is mer, and mean; on the safety lever for $50- deeper llUWll l) its spring. as in this ease it; expu'ienees no limitation by the :ever plate. In nriler tn meant the cover plate on the weannn it is new IIt'COSSHFy to iii the rel. ias ing lever b exaetly in the position in which the laitten registers with the opening 13. With my arrangen'ient this is eliected in the lilt sl simple manner by the arm .3 of the me inmatie safety device, so that the cover plate l2 ean he easily and quickly adjusted and seeni'ed without further trouble.
Having new partienlarly described and awertained the nature of my said invention. aml in what manner the same is to be perl'nrmeth I lleelare that whatl claim isl. ln autnmatie firearms a ln'em-h-hlnek, means. to eheek the same, a safety lever, means tn operate this lever when the grip is l e1zeil,means en the satiety level: for seenring l.
