Tl STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN A. MASON, OF NEWTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
SHEET-METAL FOLDER.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. MASON, of Newton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet- Metal Folders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to folding tools and particularly to a border folding tool adapted to turn into a suitable fold the edges or margins of sheet metal or similar stock. In work of this sort, and particularly in that work designated as the arts and crafts, there has been felt a need for a simple and inexpensive instrument which would make in the stock used a suitable marginal fold of uniform width and of smooth and even turn.
To the end, therefore of providing an implement which would be capable of serving in this capacity and which might be so simply constructed as to afford the possibility of provision at a reasonable figure I have devised my present invention.
This invention I will more fully disclose in the specification which follows and in it I have shown an embodiment of my invention in a tool especially adapted for use in the work above described and which is capable of being cheaply made in a serviceable and satisfactory form.
In the specification and in the drawing which forms a part thereof reference is made to corresponding parts through reference numerals uniformly applied throughout.
In the drawings I have shown an illustrative embodiment in which- Figure 1 is a plan view and Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2, Fig. l.
5 is a flat body portion formed of suitable sheet metal and preferably having a tapering form so that one edge will be narrower than that opposite to it. The material may be any suitable stock of proper quality and I find that galvanized sheet iron forms a very satisfactory material from which to manufacture the tool as it is both ornamental in appearance and rust proof in nature.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. April 1, 1909.
Patented Dec. 28, 1909.
Serial No. 487,307.
On each of the two edges above referred to is formed a reverse fold, the margin of the stock being first bent inwardly to form a rounded and reinforced working edge over which the work may be bent. The stock from the fold of this edge is again returned forming an outwardly extending lip 6. Each'of these lips 6 are substantially parallel with the body 5 of the folder and are preferably located on the same side of the folder so as to give a fiat back to the tool permitting the full turn of the margin to be made. This leaves an elongated slot or mouth 7 on each of the working edges adj acent to the rounded folding edge and substantially parallel with the body of the tool. These folds not only reinforce the working edges and supply the work engaging mouth or lip but also form finger engaging ridges making the handling of the tool easy.
What I therefore claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:--
1. A border folding tool formed of sheet metal and comprising a fiat body portion having opposite reinforced and rounded folding edges of different lengths formed by backwardly folding the opposite margins of said body portion and an outwardly projecting work engaging lip adjacent to said folding edges and formed by returning the margins of said folded body portions outward in substantial parallelism therewith.
2. A border folding tool formed of sheet metal and comprising a flat body portion having opposite reinforced and rounded folding edges of different lengths formed by backwardly folding toward the same side the opposite margins of said body portion and an outwardly projecting work engaging lip adjacent to said folding edges and formed by returning the margins of said folded body portions outward in substantial parallelism therewith.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN A. MASON.
