Letters Patent No. 94,454, dated August 31, 1869.

IMPROVEMENT IN MARINE SAFE.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the name.

To allwhom it may concern Be it known that I, E. B. TYLER, of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore, and State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Marine Safe; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference beiig had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a central vertical section;

Figure 2, a horizontal section through the safe;

Figure 3, aside elevation, showing the safe floating partially above the water; and

Figure 4, a side elevation, showing the safe sunken, and its location indicated by the buoy attached thereto.

The nature of my invention consists in so constructing a marine safe that in case of a disaster atsea, the

safe, with its contents, will float, or in caseof accident to the safe, causing it to sink, a buoy attached to it will float on the surface of the water, thus indicating the location of the safe.

To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I willproceed to describe its construction and operation.

In the drawings- A represents the inner compartment or vault of the safe.

B, the inner door, and

O, the outer door.

I), an air-tight compartment above'the vault;

1), another one, partially surrounding it; and

B, an air-tight compartment between the doors B and O.

E, a rod or staff, secured to the top of the air-compartment D.

F, a buoy on the rod or staff E, on the top of which may be attached a flag or other signal.

Jr, the chain which secures the buoy to the safe.

The doors B and O are secured in their positions and made water-tight in any desired manner. g

In case of disaster at sea, the safe will float in the water, as shown in fig. 3.

'In the buoy F, which rests on the top of the compartment D, is a hole, through which the rod E passes, and should a hole be made accidentally in either of the air-tight compartments, thereby causing the safe to sink, the buoy F will slip off the rod E, and float on the surface of the water, and being connected to r the safe by the chain G, will indicate the location of the safe, as shown in fig. 4.

On the top of the compartment D are pins, projections, or grooves, H, between which the chain G rests when the buoy is .on the rod E, thus preventing it from falling over the sides.

' The whole may be made of any suitable or desired shape and material, and so constructed as to be fire and burglar-proof.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patexit, is-- v The safe A, constructed as described, and provided at its upper end with the pins or projections H H, in combination with the buoy F and chain G, substantially as described;
