HENRI ANTOINE, OF PARIS, FRANCE.
HOLDER FOR CRAIVIPS, 86C.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 28, 1909.
Application filed November 20, 1908. Serial No. 463,660.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRI ANTOINE, a citizen of the French Republic, residing at Paris, Seine, France, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Holder for Cramps or other Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a cramp or toolsupport supplemented when required by a cramp secured in a mortise and giving it the form of a bench-cramp which can be used, owing to its design, in several positions by securing it to or engaging it with various supports such as benches, tables, cases, stools, walls etc. It receives in specially provided holes or mortises, arms or rods made in the shape of a single or double angle, such as T- or Z-shape, or the like and owing to the cooperation of such parts or arms with a sliding arm and screw, as used in existing cramps, allows the said apparatus to be used as a vise, a press, or cramp the parts of the said apparatus being portable and quickly secured. This support can be of various shapes and be provided with a single mortise if the place which it has to occupy is suitable or several holes or mortises can be provided suitable to receive rods or tools of rectangular, round or other cross-sections, so that they may be fixed or free to rotate in the support as desired. This support can be cast or riveted at the rear of the branch or branches or rods which it is designed to receive, so as to render the latter more rigid if necessary.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 shows a double angle piece in the shape of a 4: or Z seen from the front, secured to the support and fixed to the top of a table or bench, thus forming a double cramp. Fig. 2 shows the same used as a vise and seen in plan, the cramp support being in this case turned over and secured to one of the sides or legs of the table or bench. F igs. 3, A and 5 are respectively plan, side elevation and front elevation of the toolsupport.
The two arms of the Z-shaped part or double angle piece are marked a and b, and c is the sliding arm identical to that used in existing presses or cramps.
In the central portion of the two arms plates (Z and c are provided against which are placed the articles to be engaged when it is used as an ordinary cramp, as shown on the right hand side in Fig. 1.
The support into which one or the other of the arms a b is adapted to penetrate comprises a plate f (Figs. 35) provided wlth holes 9 for the passage of the fixing bolts, in
' case it is desired to secure the said support to the top or side of a table, bench, case or the like.
In the center of the plate f a box it is cast said box being provided with three right angularly' disposed holes or mortises 2', used for holding the tool for which the support is intended. A key or cotter j secured to the bracket by a chain, is introduced into the holes is 70 made at each end of the arms a and b, and prevents any premature escape of the latter when the apparatus is in use.
A recess Z with a slightly raised edge on a portion of its circumference, suitable for the passage of a fixing bolt or screw m, enables the bracket to be placed behind an upright or on a bench in which have been previously made holes or a groove in a portion of its length, and to be quickly removed therefrom.
The apparatus is thus adapted to be rotated about the bolt and may be used either as a right hand or left hand holdfast or as a press or cramp.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that the apparatus in question can be used for many purposes, of which a few examples will be given. Mounted on a table or the like as in Fig. 1, the sliding arm can be placed on one or the other fixed arm, and the article to be sewn, filed, cramped etc. can be held either in the cramp itself, or against the table to which it is secured. By fixing the bracket in the vertical position behind the leg or beneath a table, bench or the like, the apparatus may be used as a vise, as the arms are horizontal, and the article may be cramped between the edge of the table or bench and the block or shoe of the screw of the sliding arm, as shown in Fig. 2. This support could also be used without any modification for receiving the arm of an ordinary cramp, but in that way could be used only for a few purposes. It is obvious that this support might have any dimensions, the number of mortises may vary, three being however preferable, this being the best number for the various purposes for which the tool has been designed.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A tool holder comprising: a plate having holes therethrough and a slot in one edge thereof, a raised portion around the edge of testimony whereof I have signed my said slot, a box formed integral With said plate and having a plurality of mortises therein adapted for holding a tool and means 5 attached to said boX and adapted to enter a hole in the tool for preventing the premature escape of the latter.
