Description
G. N. PALMER.
I GHURN.
No. 94,435. Patented .Aug. 31, 1869 than state;
Letters Patent No. 94,435, dated August 31, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHURNS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE N. PALMER, of Greene, in the county of Ohenango, and State oi New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chums; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of my churn, and
Figure-Q; a. plan view oi -the lid.
My invention relates to improvements in churns; and to this end,
It consists in the employment of an inner and outer case orbucket, with the space between the cases filled with ice or ice-water, for the purpose of cooling the cream.
It further consists in forming the lid with a rim and tubes, substantially in the manner and for the purpose hereinafter described.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will now describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings- A represents an ordinary wooden bucket or case, formed with two supports, 11 I), on its "inside bottom, for the inner case or churn to rest upon.
a a are brackets, secured to the inner surface of the bucket A, near its upper cud, and to which the. projections c c on the churn B are secured.
B represents the inner case or churn proper, secured, as described, inside the bucket A, with a space, (Z, between A and B.
This space is to be filled with ice or ice-water, for the purpose of cooling the cream while churning.
c is a tube, formed in the bottom of the churn, and passing through the bottom of the bucket- A This tube is'closed while churning, by the insertion of the plug f, operating as seen in fig. 1.
The tube e is to allow the buttermilk to be drawn ofi.
D represents the lid, formed with a rim, 1), which is also intended to be filled with ice or ice-water.
E represents a tube, passing through the centre of the lid, for the dasher F to enter.
The lower part of this tube, that is, the part which enters the churn, is surrounded with wood, and provided with an India-rubber scraper, y, at its lower end, to prevent the cream sticking to the dnshcr.
M M represent tubes. passing through the lid into the churn, and rising some distance above the base of the lid, in order thatno water may get into the churn.
The ends of the tubes'M M inside the churn are closed, and the sides of the tubes are perforated, as seen at n 21, fig. 1
The object of closing the bottom of thetubes is to prevent the cream from getting out, and the perforations are to allow air to enter.
1" represents the dashcr, made as seen in fig. 1.
() O are legs, for the bucket A to rest upon.
Having, thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
 1. The scraper g, substantially in the nmnncr and for the purpose described.
 2. The peribrnted tubes )1 l\[,.substantially in the manner and ibr the purpose described.
 3. The lid 1), provided with tube 1'] and perforated tubes M M, in combination with the churn, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
 4. A churn, consisting of inner and outer cases A B, lid D, tubes M M and E, and dasher 1 all combined, arranged, and operating suhstantiallv as set forth. i
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
\Vitnesses: GEO. N. PALMER.
