specification of Letters raamt.
lApplication filed'August 12, 1909. vSerial No. 512,483.
'To all 'whom it may concerfnr" Be it known that L'VVILLIAM W. Rosans'rnnL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Caldwell, in the county of Noble and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 'Mine-Car Truck`s,'of which the following is tional rotation of axles employed for sup.
a specification,- reference being had] therein to the accompanying drawing. v
' This invention relates to mining cars, vand more particularly to the journal boxes of such cars employed for revolubly support-l ing the axles.
The objectief my invention is to provide the body of amining car with journal boxes having lubricant reservoirs lor j chambers adapted to insure a steady and non-fric porting the car, saidboxes' being arranged and constructed whereby a lubricant can 4be applied to the axles without removing. said axles or the revoluble wheels thereof.
Another object of this invention is to prolvide the bottom of a mining car with transverse stifening and strengthening reinforce-y ments' which also will serve as housings for journal boxes, preventing the journal boxes from getting out vlof alinement during the operation of` the car. n I
A further object Voftliis invention isv to y provide a` simple and durable journal box Ywherein the use of brasses and Babbitt metal is dispensed with, and a free distribution of lubricant employed to obtain an easy move! to be hereinafter described in detail and then Referring to the drawing forming a part of .this specification like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts. through out the several views, 1n whichzl I Figure 1 is a lbottom plan of a portion of a car constructed in accordance with my inM tudinal :sectional view of a journa box, and,4
vention, Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevation of a detached journal box, Fig. 3 is a front elevation ofthe same, showing the journal box 'secured to a'portion of a car, Fig. lis a longi- Fig. 5 is a. lan ofthe journal box showing a ortion of ajcar in dotted lines.
' o ut my invention into pr ctice, I provide't e bottom planks l o "mining car v. -yvithtwo sets of transverse parallel angle inor ilanges 3 thereof will rovide substan tieilly a channelextending rom one side of the vcar to the opposite side. Y
Arranged between the flanges 3 of each set of bars at the side edges of the car -are journal boxes, each box comprising anI oblong structure 4, having a roundedor semicylindricalbottom 5 and a flat top 6.` The sidesr of the structure 4 at the top `6 are provided with longitudinal flanges 7, and the distance from the outer edge of one flange to the outer edge of the opposite flan e corresponds to the distance between the anges 3 of each set of angle bars 2, whereby the journal boxes can be fit-ted between said 'anges. The flanges 7 are provided with vertlca'l openings 8 adapted, to.l aline'with similar openings?. inthe angle bars. 2.where` VPatented Dec. 28, 1909.
by bolts 1,0 can be. mounted in. the., bottom 11 for holding the; journal boxes and a le 'bars in engagement with the bottom of tie car. The top of the structure 6 is provided with an oblong recess 12 and at the outer end of nsaid` structure with an 4enlargement 13 having the rear end thereof overhanging the recess 12. The enlargement 13 is triangularlshaped in longitudinal section and is provi ed with an'angularly disposed p'ort .14 establishing communication between the outer end of the enlargement 13 and thereplanks.. l of. thecar to.. extend throu h, the
openings. 9 and'V 8 and be. provided wit nuts cess 12. The port 14 is lparallel with the -hypotenuse edge ofthe triangular enlargenient, and in order that the journal boxes can be secured to the'bottom of the car, as previously described, theouter edges of the side planks `1 are cut awa as at 15 to provide clearance for said en argement. The outer endfof` the enlargement is flanged as at- 16 to extend over the outer edges ofthe side planks- 1, this construction being best shown in Fig. 3.'
The structure 4:, has the bottom'thereof provided with a longitudinal. opening 18 for `an'axle 19, said opening being partially formed by the reservoir or chamber 17,'and
extending through the central portion of the z structure above the reservoii` or chamber 17. The top wall ofthe opening 18 is provided with an oblong recess 20, and through the medium of aj vertical opening`21 establishes communication between the recess 12 and v or chamber 17 is filled 'with a llubricant through the medium of ports 14 and 21, and recess 12 and 20, and with the axle 19 rotating, the motion of the axle Within the reservoir or chamber 17 has a tendency to agitate the lubricant and direct part of the same into` the recess 20, whereby the entire surface of the axle 19 within the reservoir or chamber 17 and the recess 20 Will be thoroughly lubricated. The lubricant then spreads over that portion of the axle contacting with the journal box, thus insuring an easy running of the mining car. j
The sets of an le bars 2 are braced and spaced apart b locks 22A suitably securedto the bottom o the mining car, these blocks preventing lateral displacement of the angle ars, in consequence o f which the journal box will be maintained in proper alinement.
Waste'or similar matter can be placed either in the reservoir 17 or the recess 1x2,
the latter being preferable, and-the pos1'v tioning of the Waste is accomplished before the journal'box is secured to a car and before Vthe axle 19 s',p1aced therein.
While in the Adreuving there is illustrated a'preferred embodiment of my invention, it mustV be understood that the structural ele-` ments thereof can be varied or changed, as to 'the siz'e and shape, without from the spirit of the invention.
departing v cant reservoir 1nd furthermore with a longitudinally-extending opening, axles extending-through the openings of the' journal boxes tand said reservoirs, the top Wall of said reservoir being recessed and Iarranged in proximity to said axles, each of said journal boxes having itsjouter face atithe. top thereof provided witha recess conn-V municating with'athc first-mentioned. recessby a verticallyfdisposed' contracted opening,
and a vertically-disposed enlargement carried bythe end of'each of said journal boxesat the top thereof and extending partly over the reoessin the outer face of thev box, said enlargement having an inclined port therein opening into the recess in the top of the journal box at one' end of said recess.
In testimony whereof I'aftix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
