To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, VILLIAM T. GAL- Lxe'nm: and Josnri-I lV. BLiLnY, citizens of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Roof-Brackets, of which the following is a specification.
rllhis invention relates to roofing brackets of that class which are adapted to be placed upon a gable roof for the purpose of supporting scaffolding of various kinds; and it has for its objects to simplify and improve the construction and operation of this class of devices.
lith these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying` drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention; it being however understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the invention may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side view showing` the improved roofing bracket folded for transportation or storage. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is an elevation showing the gable end of a roof and the bracket placed in position thereon. Fig. et is a perspective view showing the bracket in position upon a roof and a hanging scaffold supported thereby. Fig. 5 is an end view of a gable roof showing a bracket in position thereon and adjusted to support horizontal scaolding. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view, enlarged, taken through a portion of the device. Fig. 7 is a transverse sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 7 7 in Fig. 6. Fig. S is a transverse sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 88 in Fig. 6. Fig. 9 is a top plan view showing a portion of the bracket extended for placing upon a roof.

The improved roofing bracket is composed of two side members A and B connected together at their meeting ends by a hinge C Specification of Letters Patent.

which will admit of said members being folded together as will be seen in Fig. 1 of the drawings. Said members are provided in their inner sides, which are juxtaposed when folded together with recesses 10 reinforced adjacent to their upper edges by guard plates l11.
A sleeve or collar l) which is slidably fitted upon one of the bracket members, B, is equipped with a thumb screw 12 whereby it may be firmly secured in any position to which it may be adjusted. A frame F which is composed of side members 13 connected together at their outer extremities by means of a spacing block 14 is pivotally connected with the sleeve D by pins or pivots 15 extending through the side 'members of the frame. Said side members 13 are provided with notches 16 adapted for engagement with lugs or studs 17 extending from opposite sides of the member B of the device. It will be readily seen from the foregoing description that the members A and B may be turned upon the hinge C until the meeting ends of said members practically abut upon each other, the device being then supported upon the gable roof 19 of a building that is to be painted or repaired. The suspending hooks 20 of the scaffolding 21 may now be engaged in any of the recesses 10 or 10 to properly support the scaffolding with out injury to the roof. It is evident that the frame F may be extended to any desired point where it may be secured by placing the lugs 17 in engagement with notches in the side rails of the frame. It is also evident that within the scope of the invention, a frame such as F may be applied to each of the members A and B of the device.
When the improved roofing bracket is to be utilized for supporting horizontal scaffolding, as in the construction of chimneys,
etc.,the frameFwill be raised to an approximately horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 5 and supported by a brace 24. Under such circumstance, two of the brackets will preferably be utilized to enable planking to be supported upon the frames F as will be readily understood.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto vannexed the operation and advantages ofv this invention will be readily understood. The
construction is extremely isimple and Vinexpensive; the brackets may be easily and conveniently applied and, when in position, will afford supporting means for scaifolding without injury to the roof. l/Vhen not in use, the device may be folded into small compass for storage or shipment.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed isl. A roofing bracket comprising two horizontally connected members, a sleeve slidably engaging' one member and having a thumb screw, side rails pivotally connected with the sleeve and having notches, notch engaging lugs extending from the sides of the member carrying the sleeve, and a spacing block connecting the free ends of the rails.
2. A roong bracket comprising two hingedly connected members having recesses in their meeting faces, a sleeve slidably engaging one member and having -a thumb screw, side rails pivotally connected With the sleeve, and having notches, notch-engaging lugs extending from the sides of the member carrying the sleeve, and a spacing block connecting the free ends of the rails and having a recess and a scaold having recess engaging hooks.
