INVENTOR. Q (rflm' UNITED PATENT OFFICE.
ENOCH OHNSTRAND, OF JAMES'IOWN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO ART METAL CON- STRUCTION COMPANY, OF JAMESTOWN, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
DRAWER FOR FILING-CASES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 21, 1909.
Application filed. May 15, 1909. Serial No. 496,252.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ENooH OHNSTRAND, a resident of Jamestown, in the count of Chautauqua and State of New York, ave invented a new and useful Improvement in Drawers for Filing-Cases; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to drawers of cabinets, filing cases, etc., and more particularly to the follower or device for holding the cards or envelops compacted together in the case.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which when clamped in position will be held securely against slipping, while at the same time when released the device may be moved readily from one end of the case to the other or entirely removed from the case when desired without removing any of the parts.
To these ends my invention comprises, generally stated, in connection with a drawer having a guide-strip at the bottom thereof, a follower engaging said guidestrip, having a spring actuated dog adapted to engage a roughened face on said guidestrip, together with means for releasing said follower from the guide-strip to remove it from the drawer without removing any of the parts of said follower, all as fully hereina-fter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view partly broken away of my improved drawer; Fig. 2 is a front view of the follower, the drawer being shown in section; Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33, Fig. 2; Fig. 4c is a perspective view of the follower showing the bottom thereof.
In the drawings the neral 2 designates a suitable drawer or fiptacle which may be formed of sheet al. The bottom of the drawer is pressed in suitable dies to form the ribs or bearings 3, and the central rib 4. Secured to the central rib 4c is the strip or bar 5 which extends from one end of the case to the other, said strip being riveted or otherwise secured to the rib 4-. This construction provides the guide-ways 6 be tween the bottom of the drawer and the lower face of the strip 5. The strip 5 is provided with the roughened or indented upper face 7, which may be in the form of serrations or other depressions giving a roughened face. This indented face is slightly below the level of the faces of the ribs 3. One end of the strip 5 is cut away on one side, as at 8, for the purpose more fully hereinafter set. forth.
The follower 10 comprises the vertical plate 11 and the flange 12, the flange 12 being cut to form the guide lugs 13 which are formed by depressing the flange at. these points and these guide-lugs are adapted to engage at opposite sides the lower faces of the bar 5, said lugs projecting into the guide spaces 6 at each side of said bar.
The dog or looking member 14: is mounted on the follower and said follower has the lugs 15 struck up therefrom in which the dog 14 is mounted. The dog let has the studs 16 which enter openings 17 formed in the lugs 15. The jaws 18 of the dog are adapted to enter the slots 19 formed by cutting the metal to form the guide lugs 13 and said jaws in this way are adapted to engage the serrated or roughened portions of the strip 5. A spring 20 is interposed between the follower plate 11 and the dog 11, said spring being secured to said dog.
When the jaws of the dog engage the roughened faces of the strip 5 the follower is held securely in position and will remain in any position to which it may be adjusted. The operator by pressing his thumb against the dog and compressing the spring 20 thereby releases the jaws of the dog from the roughened faces of the strip 5 so that the follower may then be moved readily to any position desired 011 the strip 5 and when the dog is released it immediately takes a tenacious hold upon the strip 5. When it is desired to remove the follower from the drawer the follower is moved to the extreme front end of the drawer where the cut-away portion 8 of the strip 5 occurs, when by shifting the follower to one side the guide lug on that side is released from engagement with the strip 5, whereupon the fol lower may be lifted out owing to the fact that the opposite guide lug is not in engagement with the strip 5 due to the cut-away portion 8. This makes it possible to readily remove the follower without removing any of the parts.
The longitudinal ribs 3 on the bottom of the drawer serve to keep the follower from rocking, as they form bearings at opposite sides of the follower and in this way the mounting of the follower is made more se- Disclaimer in Letters Patent No. 943,841.
cure. These ribs 3 furthermore act to hold the cards on file above the indented face 7 and so relieve the wear on the edges of said cards.
What I claim is:

The combination of a drawer or other receptacle, a strip extending longitudinally thereof forming guideways ,at each side thereof, a follower, guide-lugs struck up from said follower and forming openings in the follower, a locking member on said follower, jaws on said locking member enter ing said openings and engaging said strip.
2. The combination of a drawer or other receptacle, a strip extending longitudinally thereof forming guideways at each side thereof, a follower, guide-lugs struck up from said follower and forming openings in the follower, said guide-lugs engaging said guideways, a locking member pivoted on said follower, and jaws on said locking member entering said openings and engaging said strlp.
