To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, \VILBUR B. PEAK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pinhook Landing, in the county of Meigs and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Obstetrical Beds, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to improvements in obstetrical beds and more particularly one which may be taken apart and packed in a portable case so that a physician may conveniently carry it with him and quickly set it up for use.

The object of the invention is to provide a foldable or knock-down bed of this character which will be simple and strong in construction, convenient and easy to set up and adjust for use, and exceedingly effective in accomplishing its intended purposes.

\Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of the improved bed with parts removed; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section; Fig. 3 is a detail perspective of a portion of one of the members of the bed frame; Fig. 1 is a similar view of one of the coupling sleeves which detachably unite the two members of the bed frame; Fig. 5 is a detail section taken on the line 5-5 in Fig. 2; Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 1 of a different form of coupling sleeve; Fig. 7 is a view similar to Fig. .3 showing the use of the sleeve shown in Fig. 6; Fig. 8 is a detail plan view of the hip supporting pad or cushion; Fig. 9 is a detail section taken on the line 99 in Fig. 8; Fig. 10 is a detail perspective view of one of the supporting members or rests; Figs. 11 and 12 are, respectively, a top plan of and vertical section through the adjustable deflector or shield; and Fig. 13 is a detail perspective of one of the rear legs for supporting the bed frame.

The invention contemplates a foldable or knock-clown bed frame which when folded or taken apart can be readily packed in a carrying case together with other parts and attachments of the bed, as well as a physicians obstetrical case and other articles, instruments, etc. In the preferred embodi- Specification of Letters Patent.

ment of the invention illustrated, said bed frame is of rectangular shape and consists of two separable members 1, 2, each formed by bending a metal bar into U-shape. The cross portions 3 of these U-shaped members form the ends of the frame and their parallel arms a are connected by coupling sleeves 5 to form the sides of the frame. As shown in Fig. 4, the sleeve 5 has open angular ends 6 to receive ends of the arms a, an opening 7 at its top and two pins 8 arranged in its channeled bottom portion and adapted to enter notches 9 formed in the bottom edges of the arms 1. In connecting the two arms 4 by the sleeve 5, they are held in angular positions and inserted in the angular ends 6 of the sleeve until their ends project into the open portion 7 of the sleeve and they are then straightened to bring their notches 9 into engagement with the pins 8, as shown in Figs. 2 and 5, whereupon the members 1, 2 of the bed frame will be locked together to produce an exceedingly rigid and substantial frame.

If desired, the rectangular coupling sleeve 10 shown in Fig. 6 may be employed in lieu of the sleeve 5; and when this is done, the arms 4 are inserted in the open ends of the sleeve 10 and removable bolts 11 are then passed through registering openings in the sleeve and arms, as seen in Fig. 7. This construction provides a more substantial connection but does not allow the members to be as quickly and easily connected together or separated.

Each end of the bed frame is supported by two removable legs 12 which may have cas ters on their lower ends. Their upper ends have upwardly and inwardly inclined, integral braces 13, and upon the latter, as well as upon said upper ends of the legs, are formed rocks 14 to engage openings 15 in the ends 3 of the bed frame. Detachable diagonal braces 17 are provided for the legs, each of said braces consisting of a rod having at one end a hook 18 to enter an opening 19 in one of the side portions or arms alof the bed or frame and at its other end a bent portion 20 to pass through an opening 21 in one of the legs and apertured to receive a retaining pin 22. At the opposite end of the bed frame are detachable supporting members or rests 23, 24, each of which is made removable by providing it with a pair of hook-shaped arms 25 to enter between the side portions 4t and to take under the bottom edges of the same,

as will be understood upon reference to Figs. 1, 2 and 10. The member 23 is adapted to serve as a head rest for the occupant of the bed and it may be of any form and construction and have an inclination, as seen in Fig. 2. The member 24: is adapted to be used as a support for the child or for instruments, and at the center of its inner edge it is formed with a substantially semicircular opening or recess 26 which is disposed oppo site a similarly shaped or V-shaped recess 27 formed in the end portion 3 of the member 2 of the bed frame by bending the same as shown in Fig. 1.

The bed frame covered by a removable and folding bottom consisting, preferably, of three hingedly connected sections 28, 29, 30. These sections are equal in width to that of the bed frame and their combined length They are all of the same length so that the two end ones 28, 30 can fold over upon the central one 29, as shown in Fig. 9 of the drawings. The hinges 31 which unite these sections are formed by the ends of reinforcing metal straps or cleats 32 secured to said sections, the straps upon the under face of the section 28 being adapted to enter between the side portions l of the bed frame member 2 to prevent the sections from slipping sidewise upon the bed frame. The section 28 is formed with a V-shaped recess 33 adapted to register with the recess 27 in the member 2 of the bed frame, and the top face of said section is covered with a hip supporting pad or cushion 34:. The latter is properly shaped to fit the person and its top is inclined downwardly and outwardly toward the outer or rear edge of the section, and at said edge and on opposite sides of the recess 33, the cushion is formed with stop projections 35 which prevent the occupant of the bed from slipping off. The sections 29, 30 of the bed bottom are not cushioned in order that they may fold, as seen in Fig. 9, but when the bed is in use ordinary bed pillows may be placed on these sections and also upon the head rest 23, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2.

Two leg supports 36 are removably and adjustably mounted in the rear supporting legs of the bed frame. Said supports 36 are in the form of metal bars slidably arranged in vertical slots 37 formed in the bed legs 12 and at their inner ends they are formed with hooks 38 to take under and slide on the bottom edges of the side portions at of the bed frame and hold them in a horizontal position. The bottom walls of the slots 37 are beveled, as shown at 39, to form pawls which co-act with ratchetteeth et-O formed on the bottom edge of the supporting bars 36, to retain the latter in adjusted position. It will be seen that when the outer ends of the bars 36 are lifted they may be slid longitudinally in the slots 37 and when l r l l lowered will be locked in adjusted position. To the outer ends of the bars 36 are secured metal loops 41 in which are pivoted foot pieces 42. Said loops 41 are formed by bending metal straps into oval shaped loops and bringing their ends together on opposite sides of the bars 36 and uniting them thereto by rivets or the like. The foot pieces arefixed to cross bars 43 which form pivots and have their ends rotatable in openings in opposite sides of the loops 4E1. Bracing cords n may be attached to the loops 41 and carry knee caps 45 and handles 4:6. The knee caps are preferably made of leather and upon their outer surfaces and 011 opposite sides are guides 47 containing guide rollers 48 over which the bifurcated portions of the cords tt pass.

For the purpose of supporting a pot or other vessel beneath the openings or recesses 26, 27 and 33, as indicated in dotted lines in. Fig. 2, a removable shelf 49 is suspended by means of three links 50. These links have hooks at their upper ends and one of them engages a removable screw eye 51 in the section 28 of the bed bottom and the other two of which engage similar eyes 52 on the end portion 3 of the bed frame member 2.

A removable and adjustable deflector is arranged at the recess 26 in the support or rest 2st. This deflector or shield, as shown in Figs. 11 and 12, is composed of two substantially U-shaped members 5%, 55, having slidably engaged or overlapping curved portions 56 and converging arms 57 which are pivoted to each other, as shown at 58. This deflector has its lower or outer member 54 seated in the recess 26 of the support 2% and it is held in place by the engagement of the arms 57 with the cushion 36. The inner members 55 may be raised out of or low cred into the outer member 54 and is frictionally retained in an adjusted position.

From the foregoing the use and advantages of the invention will be readily understood by those familiar with devices of this character and it will be seen that the invention provides an exceedingly simple and practical device which will be very convenient to handle and carry to the place where it is needed.

.Vhile I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, itwill be understood that I do not wish to be limited to the precise construction set forth and that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:

1. In a device of the character described, the combination of two separable U-shaped frame members having the ends of their parallel arms beveled and formed in their bottom edges adjacent said beveled ends with notches, coupling sleeves to receive the arms of the U-shaped body members and having their ends beveled and their central portions open at the top, whereby the arms of the frame members may be inserted in said beveled ends of the sleeves when disposed in angular relation thereto, and keeper pins in the bottom portions of said sleeves to enter the notches in the arms of the frame members when said arms are swung into longitudinal alinement.

2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a rectangular body frame having its end bars formed adjacent to its corners with the spaced openings 15 and its side bars formed with the openings 19, detachable supporting legs having upright body portions and inwardly inclined integral brace portions, the upper ends of said body and brace portions of the legs being formed with the outwardly bent hooks 1 1 with bent extremities, said hooks being adapted to be passed through the openings 15 in an outward direction, the lower portions of said upright legs being formed with openings, diagonal braces having their up per ends formed with the hooks 18 to enter said openings 19 and their lower ends bent angularly and passed outwardly through the openings in the legs, and removable keeper pins for retaining the bent lower ends of the braces in said legs.

3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a horizontally disposed rectangular frame having side and end bars, of a removable rest to bear upon one of the end bars and having its inner edge provided with downwardly extending arms to enter between and engage the inner faces of the side bars of the frame, said arms terminating in outwardly and upwardly turned hooks to engage under the bottom edges of the side bars of the frame.

In a device of the character described, the combination of a frame having separable members, a sectional bed bottom removably arranged on said frame, a hip support upon one of said bed bottom sections, a receptacle support arranged beneath the hip support and detachably connected to the frame, supporting legs detachably connected to the frame members, foot supports adjustably and detachably arranged upon said supporting legs, knee caps and flexible connections engaged with said knee caps and connected to said foot supports.

5. In a device of the character described, the combination of a frame having separable members, a sectional bed bottom removably arranged on said frame, a hip support upon one of said bed bottom sections, a receptacle support arranged beneath-the hip support and detachably connected to the frame, supporting legs detachably connected to the frame members, foot supports adjustably and detachably arranged upon said supporting legs, a supporting member detachably connected to the frame beyond said hip support and having an open portion, and a deflector removably arranged in said open portion of the supporting member.

6. In a device of the character described, the combination of a frame having separable members, a sectional bed bottom removably arranged on said frame, a hip support upon one of said bed bottom sections, a receptacle support arranged beneath the hip support and detachably connected to the frame, supporting legs detachably connected to the frame members, foot supports adjustably and detachably arranged upon said supporting legs, a supporting member detachably mounted at one end of the frame and having an open portion, a deflector removably arranged in said open portion of the supporting member, knee caps and flexible elements engaged with said knee caps and connected to said foot supports. 7. In a device of the character described, the combination of a frame, a hip support thereon, foot supporting members carried by said frame, knee caps and flexible elements engaged with said knee caps and connected to said foot supports.

8. In a device of the character described, the combination of a frame or support, longitudinally extending bars projecting from one end of the same, foot pieces, supporting frames for said foot pieces formed by bending metal straps upon themselves to provide loops and uniting the opposite ends of said straps to the opposing faces of said bars, and pivots for mounting said foot pieces in said loops.

9. In a device of the character described, the combination of a frame, a hip support thereon, a supporting member or rest, the latter and said hip support having opposing recesses, and a deflector arranged at said recesses and having curved sections pivotally connected to each other at their ends, the intermediate portions of said sections being slidably engaged with each other.

10. In a device of the character described, the combination with a support having an open portion, of a deflector arranged at said open portion of the support and having curved sections pivotally connected to each other at their ends, the intermediate portions of said sections being slidably engaged with each other.
