DISPLAY-RACK.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, F RANK JA UEs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Morristown, county of Morris, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display-Racks, of which the following isa full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates more particularly to a rack adapted to display wall-paper.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient foldable or knock-down rack which is adapted to display wall-paper either in the form of books or rolls, so that the rolls or sheets of paper may be successively placed in position for display purposes, thus avoiding the difliculty of handling the sample sheets when made into a book or injuring the paper by the usual method of displaying the same when in the form of rolls.

Another object of the invention is to provide simple and efficient means whereby a number of sheets of wall-paper, as samples, may have the sheets successively forced into position so that the designs or patterns may be readily inspected.

A further object of the invention is to provide simple means whereby the device may be readily converted to hold either books or rolls of paper, and to provide means whereby the device may be readily folded in a compact space so that the same may be readily transported.

A still further object of the invention is to provide simple means whereby various articles may be supported, and to provide a device which may be used for various purposes.

With these and other objects in View, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and will then be pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device when employed to display the wall-paper samples which are bound in book form. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device when arranged to hold one or more rolls of wallpaper for display. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of the device supporting a book of samples. Specification of Letters Patent.

The device has a frame or supporting member and this member comprises two base members 11 to each of which is hinged, at 12, an upright or standard 13, said standards being connected transversely therer 13, the said base member being connected by the transversely-extending rods 20.

A member 21 is pivotally held to the upper transverse rod 17, and this member 21 comprises two side bars 22 wiich are connected together by the transverse rods 23 and 24:, and pivotally held between the side bars 22, as by a rod 25, is a member 26. This member 26 also has side bars 27 which are connected together by the rod and rod 28, and said side members have their inner edges slotted or notched, as at 29, and are adapted to engage one of the rods 15 and 16, as for example rod 16, so as to hold the member 21 in substantially a horizontal position to support an object, as a book 30. The book may contain samples of paper 31, and has one end provided with hooks 31 adapted to fit about the upper rod 17 and form a rest for the hook, there being a metal removable and transversely-extending rod 32 provided to hold the hook on the plate or support 33, the latter being detachably held over the rod 23 and 24.

To feed the sheets of paper successively, various means may be employed. As shown a bracket 33 is secured to one side of each of the uprights 13, and pivotally held to said brackets, as at 34, are the arms 35 which are connected together by a transversely-extending rod 36. A shaft 37 is rotatably held in the arms 35, and on the shafts are wheels 38 adapted to rotate therewith, and these wheels may have a roughened surface to properly engage the leaves of the book, and when rotated will force the leaves in a position to drop over in front of the uprights, as shown best in Figs. 1 and 3. The arms 35 and feed rollers 38 are normally forced yieldingly downward by means of springs 39 which are held at one end to brackets 33 and at the other ends pass through eyes, as 40, projecting from the arms or from collar, as 11, located on each end of the shaft 37. The shaft is provided with a handle, as 42, so that when the latter is rotated, the wheels 38 will successively shift the leaves of the books in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and will cause the leaves to be forced forward, and to prevent the leaves from falling backward over the feed wheels 38 is a device or stop as -13. This device 43 may have a V-shaped part or body 1% and has its ends provided with coils 15 adapted to fit about a transversely-extending rod 36, and one of its ends, as 4:6, passes over the shaft 37 and its other end, as 47, under the shaft to properly hold the shaft 37 upright and inclined, as shown in Fig. 2. By this means the leaves of a book of wallpaper to be displayed may be properly and successively fed so that each leaf may be in spected in front of the rack.

In case it is desired to display rolls of wall-paper, cloth, or any other material, the member 26 is released from the rod 16, and the supporting plate 38 for the book as well as the book itself is removed by removing the rod 82 or otherwise, and this will permit the member 21 to be inclined and the member 26 may have its notches made to engage the rod 15, as shown best in Fig. 2. This will form a crotch or V-shaped part 4C8 in which a number of rolls of paper may be placed, and the paper or other material passed over the upper rod so as to fall in front of the device between the standards 13, the crotch being large enough to hold a number of rolls so that a number of samples may be properly displayed.

The device may be adapted to provide a table to support books or any other objects, and in this case the member 21 is forced downward on its pivot 17 and the member 26 is made to assume a substantially horizontal position, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 8, and in this position one or more bars or parts 49 may be provided which are notched at their ends so as to adapt the same to engage the rod 28 of the member 26 and the rod 14 extending transversely between the uprights or standards 13.

A hooked or engaging device 50 is secured to the transverse rod 28 of the memer 26, and this hook is adapted to engage the rod 1% when the members 21 and 26 are to be folded in close relation with respect to the uprights 13 to hold them folded when it is desired to place the rack out of the way, and, if desired, the base members 11 may be also folded in close relation to the uprights 13 by releasing the hooks 18 when the said members 11 may be moved on the hinges 12.

It will thus be seen that a simple and effi cient device is provided whereby a book containing a number of leaves of wall-paper may be properly supported on the device and the leaves successively fed so that they may be readily seen in order to display the design or pattern of the paper; that said device may also be made to hold and display rolls of paper; that said device may be used for display of various objects; that said device may be readily knocked down for transportation or other purposes and folded so as to occupy much less space than when in use; and that said device may be made to provide a table or support for various objects.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A device of the character described, comprising a vertical member, a horizontally-extending pivoted member, a member pivotally held to the horizontally-extending member and adapted to engage a part of the vertical member so as to support an object on the horizontally-extending member, and feeding means comprising a bracket located on each side of said horizontally extending pivoted member, an arm projecting from each bracket, and yieldingly held feeding wheels carried by the brackets.

2. A rack of the character described, comprising a vertical member, a member pivotally held thereto, a member pivotally held to the last-mentioned member and adapted to engage a part of the vertical member so as to support an object, a supporting plate, and feeding means located over said plate comprisin bracket located on each side of said second mentioned member, an arm projecting from each bracket, and yieldingly held feeding wheels carried by the brackets.

8. The combination with a supporting member having transversely-extending rods, a member pivotally held to one of the rods, a third member pivotally held to the lastmentioned member and adapted to engage a part of the first-mentioned member, and feeding means comprising a bracket located on each side of said first mentioned pivotally held member, an arm projecting from each bracket, and yieldingly held feeding wheels carried by the brackets.

The combination with supporting means adapted to hold a book, of feeding means adapted to move the leaves of a book and comprising a bracket located on each side of the supporting means, an arm projecting from each bracket, a spring normally forcing the arm in one direction, a shaft rotatably held in the arms, feeding wheels carried by the shaft, a handle for rotating the shaft, and a stop device carried by the arms.

5. The combination with supporting means adapted to hold a book, of feeding means adapted to move the leaves of a book and comprising a bracket located on each side of the supporting means, an arm projecting from each bracket, a spring normally forcing the arm in one direction, a shaft rotatably held in the arms and feeding wheels carried by the shaft.

6. The combination with supporting means adapted to hold a book, of feeding means adapted to move the leaves of a book and comprising a bracket located on each side of the supporting means, an arm projecting from each bracket, and yieldingly held feeding wheels carried by the brackets.

7. The combination with supporting means adapted to hold a book, of feeding means adapted to move the leaves of a book and comprising pivotally held arms, means normally forcing the arms in one direction, a shaft rotatably held in the arms, feeding wheels carried by the shaft, and means for rotating said shaft.

8. A device of the character described, comprising base members, upright members hinged to said base members, devices for holding the upright members at right angles to the base members, rods connecting the upright members together, a pivotally held member carried by one of the rods and comprising side bars connected together by transversely-extending rods, a supporting plate located above the transverselyextending rods and adapted to hold a book, a rod extending transversely of the supporting member adapted to clamp one part of the book, a shaft, wheels secured to said shaft and adapted when rotated to feed the leaves of the book, and means for yieldingly supporting said wheels above the book.

9. A rack of the character described, comprising supporting means, a supporting plate adapted to hold a book, a rod extending transversely of the supporting means adapted to clamp one part of the book, a shaft, wheels secured to said shaft and adapted when rotated to feed the leaves of the book, and means for yieldingly supporting said wheels above the book.

10. A device of the character described, comprising base members, upright members hinged to said base members, devices for holding the upright members at right angles to the base members, a rod for connecting the upright members together, a pivotally held member carried by one of the rods and comprising side bars connected together by transverselyextending rods, a supporting plate located above the transversely-extending rods and adapted to hold a book, a rod extending transversely of the supporting member adapted to clamp one part of the book, and feeding means adapted to successively feed the leaves of the book.

11. A display rack comprising a support ing member having transverselyextending rods, a member pivotally held to one of said rods, a third member pivotally held to the last-mentioned member and having a trans versely-extending rod, and means engaging the supporting member and the last-mentioned member to cause the latter to assume a substantially horizontal position.
