COLLAPSIBLE TUBE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 14, 1909.
Application filed March 3, 1909. -Serial No. 481.184.
1'0 all whom "it may concern:
lie it known that I. litIIBI-IN Bnoons. of i the Gloucester, in th county of lussex and State of Massachusetts. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in (ollapsible Tubes. of which the following is a speci tication.
This invention relates to a collapsible tube which is charged with a liquid or semiliquid material, such as glue, paint. etc.. the tube having a delivering end through which its contents are forced in a stream by compressing pressure on the walls of the tubes when the latter is in use.
The invention also relates to a tube of this character which, when put upon the market. has an incipient outlet closed by a puncturable wall or septum. the tube being accompanied by a pointed plug adapted to penetrate theseptum. thus colnpleting and tilling the outlet.
"he invention has for its object. first. to provide a tube of this character with 'means for smoothly spreziding the stream of liquid into a thin strip having clearly defined edges. the strip being of a predetermiucd width.
The invention also has for its object to enable the depth or thickness of the deposited strip of material to be regulated or varied by varying the inclination of the tube with reference to the surface on which the material is deposited by it.
The invention further has for its object to provide improved means for laterally supporting the plug when it is inserted in the outlet of the tube. and preventing it t'rom being tipped in such manner as to enlarge or distort the outlet.
To these ends the invention consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim.
()Pthe accompanying drawings. forming.
1 repa part of this specification.ligure resents a side view of thedeiivering end portion of a collapsible tube embodying my Fig. 2 represents an end view of the same. Fig. 3 represents a section on line 3-3 of .Fig. 1. view siihilar to Fig. 3, showing a penetrating plug engaged with the outlet end of the tube. Fig. 5 represents a sectional view of the delivering end portion of the tube in operation. Fig. 6 represents a sectional view of a modification.
Fig. i represents a The same reference characters indicate same parts in all the figures.
In the drawings.-12 represents the body portion of a collapsible tube which is preferably seamless and made of a suitable'flexible metal alloy. one end of the tube 'bein suitably closed by flattening it and foldin the flattened parts togethe' after the tube has been charged. I have not shown this portion of the tube as my invention does not relate thereto. but relates instead entirely to the delivering end portion of the tube. Said delivering end portion is preferably of conical form. and is provided at its apex with a circular cavity 13 extending from the outer surface partly to the interior of the tube. said cavity being separated from the interior of the tube by a penetrable. septum l-t formed of the same material as the tube, and adapted to be ruptured by the pointed plug hereinafter referred to. the cavity 13 constituting the. outer end of an outlet. the inner end of which is formed by the rupturing ot' the septum 14. The tube is placed upon the market with the septum l4 intact.
so that the tube has no outlet until one is I provided by the user by tl aid of the pene- ,projection being 'ing operation. pro ection is is formed by the groove .17.
trating plug.
15 represents the plug which is made of cylindrical wire. the diameter of which is substantially equal to that of the cavity 13, one end of the plug it is adapted to penetrate the septum H. and thus complete the outlet of the tube.
It; represents a rigid projection which is formed on the apex of the delivering end of the tube. and is integral the with. the
formed from the material a suitable molding or press The main portion of the at one side of the cavity 13. the inner side oi the projection being preferably Lprovided with a groove or recess 17 which is in alinement with one sidev ot' the cavity 13. so that when the plug 15 is inserted in the outlet. it has an xtended bearing on that part of the projection which The projection is provided with a beveled or inclined face 18 at the opposite ends of which are cars or runners 19 which have curved edges and project somewhat above the upper edge of the face 18. hen the tube is inverted and applied to the surface 20 to which the contents of the/tube are to be applied. the runof the tube by being sharpened so that ind by reason he outer edge of jtly separated vi li cl). pressure is force a stream of its the outlet, said runne spri i. 7
be dept uniform idth p or i e the suilace Q i 1 20, thus reducied strip, waich er utilized as a '0' j ugh), and prerenting the latter front being laterally displaced or tipped tv ordistort the outlet ug'iening. bet'o stated, the groove or recess 1? in the inner side of the projection constitutes an elongated bearing for one side of the plug-l5, thus prerenting the tipping ot the plug; toward the side of the outlet. occupied by the projection. Din suitable provision may be liltltlti for preventing the tipping f the plug in the opposite direclion. have here shown the plug provided "with a finger 2 formed to bear on the outer side of the projection it). and engage a notch or recess "-l l'orined therein. Provision is thus hide {or preventing the plug from tipping away i'i'oin the projection, and also from being aceideimilly dislodged from the outlet. The lin a BI is an extension of the wire blanl; of will the plug is made, the -wire being; preferably coiled to form a head or loop 25.
in l 1;; 3, i show the above described iniproveineht embodied in an internally tin aded cap adapted for engagen'ient with an externally threaded neck or nozzle 26 at the delivering end of a collapsible tube 12. The said cap has a base portion "2? which is internally threaded to engage the nozzle 26. the outer portion of the cap being provided with the cavity 13. projection 16, and runners 19, all formed and relatively arranged substantially as above described.
I claim l. A collapsible tube having an outlet, and a projection at one side of the outlet, the outer end of said projection being formed to spread and limit the width of a stream of liquid issuing from the outlet.
2. A collapsible tube having an outlet, and
a projection on its delivering end at one side of the outlet, said projection having a stream spreading face and runners located at opposite ends of saidlfaee and projecting above the same 3. A collapsible tube having an outlet, and a projection on its delivering end at one side of the outlet, said projection having a stream spreading face and runners located atv opposite ends of said face and projecting above the same, the runners being formed to vary the height of the aetin edge of the spreading face above the Sllll'iltt) on which the runners bear.
4. A collapsing tube having a delivering;
end provided with a cavity which is sepaated from the interior of the tube by a puneturable septum, and a rigid projection on the said said projeelion being formed to engage and laterally support a pointed plug adapted to penerate the septum and engage the projection.
A collapsible tube having a projection on its delivering end at one side of its outlet, combined with a plug having a tinge adapted to engage theo'uter side of said projection the body of the plug bearing'on the inner side of the projection.
in testimony whereof I have aiiixed my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
