To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JUE An: CHow, a citi- Zen of the United States, and a resident of Helena, in the county of Lewis and Clark and Stateof Montana, have invented a Table Attachment for the Purpose of Holding in Position Meats and Vegetables in Cutting or Slicing the Same, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to an attachment for tables to be used in restaurants or kitchens, for holding meats, vegetables and the like, in a satisfactory manner for slicing the same by means of an ordinary knife, whereby the slices can be evenly and uniformly cut.

' The principal objects of the invention are to provide a device of this character which can be readily attached to or detached from a table including a plate adapted to -be projected upwardly above the table top in a position at right angles thereto to form a rest Vagainst which the object to be sliced is held,

-while at the same time resting on the top of the table, there being an extension leaf which can be used for preventing the slices falling to the floor.

lith these objects in view and others, as will appear as the description proceeds, rthe invention com-prises the various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be more fully described hereinafter and set forth with particularity in the claims appended hereto.

In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates one embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a front view of the device applied to a table. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof. Fig. 3 is a perspective view .of the device detached from the table. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on line 4 4, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the attaching brackets. Fig. 6 is a modified form of attaching bracket. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of .one of the tongue strips for attaching the device to its brackets.

Similar reference characters are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout the views.

Referring to the drawing, A designates an ordinary table or support which is provided with a top 1 that projects atits marginal portions beyond thebody of the table, and attached to the projecting marginal portion of the table top at one end is the attachment designated generally by B. This attachment comprises a support 2 in the form of a rectangular casing or plate ,provided with a chamber 3 which is open at the top, thereby forming a pocket, into andv out of which is moved a flat plate or rest 4. The casing or support 2 is mounted on the table with lits upper open end flush with the table top, and the rest 4 is adapted to be projected upwardly out of the casing to vany desired eX- tent so as to form a rest for the meat or vegetables to be sliced. As shown in Fig. 1, C designates a piece of ham resting on the table top and having its sliced ,end bearing against the rest 4, whereby the latter holds the ham firm while a slice is `severed therefrom. In the casing 2 are springs ,5 which serve to project the rest 4 upwardly, and the rest can be held in any desired position by a set pin or screw 6 at one end of the .casing and adapted to engage one of the .end faces of the rest 4. lVhen the rest is not in use, it can be. pushed into the casing 2 and held in closed position by the set screw 6.

The casing 2 is attached to the table by means of brackets D which are fastened .to the casing at one side, and to the under side of the table top 1. 0n the 1table top are tongue pieces S such as shown in Fig. J7, foxl receiving the horizontal grooveengaging members 9 `of the attaching brackets,r and each member 9 has a screw 10 forengaging in a recess 11 inthe tongue pieces or rails 8. The rails S are secured in place by screws kor the like extending through ropenings 12 and screwing into the table top. After .the rails or tongue pieces 8 yare placed in proper .position, the bracketscan vbe slipped ythereon to attach the device to the table top. On the casing 2 are vertically -disposed rails or tongue `,pieces 13 secured in place by screws 14, andthese are adapted to ,engage in .the grooved members 15, vertically disposed on the brackets D, the said members 15 having set screws 1G that are adapted toengage in notches 17 in the lrail members 13. It will thus be seen that the casing` can be detached from the brackets while the .latter are left remaining on -the table top. The modification-shown in Fig. G is a v.bracket comprising a vertically-grooved member 18 `which adapted to be secured directly to the table .body when the top of the .tabledoes noti project beyond the body to afford attachment l for brackets of the form shown in Fig. 1. The bracket 18 will serve to receive the vertical rail members 13 of the device and thus support the same on the table.

On the outer side of the casing 2 is a swingingleaf or extension 19 attached to the casing by hinges 2O so arranged that when the extension leaf is in open position, its top surface will be flush with the table top 1, and this leaf is held in open position by braces 21 hinged at 22 to the leaf and adapted to engage stops 23 on the casing. By releasing the brackets from the stops, the extension leaf can be dropped down alongside the casing A to closed position when not required. This extension leaf can be used with or without the rest 4 and can be of any desired size, and when the rest 4 is in closed position, the leaf 19 forms simply an extension for the table.

In slicing the ham, when the bone is encountered, the rest 4 is moved inwardly so that the top edge will be adjacent the bone and the slice will fall outwardly over the top of the rest 4 to the extension leaf 19, as shown by dotted lines at c. The bone is then severed by a saw, without the rest 4 interfering with the operation of the saw, as would be the case if the rest were left in fully extended position. After the bone is Sawed, the slice is completely severed and it is prevented from slipping olf the top of the rest to the ioor by reason of the leaf extension 19.

l/Vhen the device is not in use, the plate 4 is moved into the casing 2 and the leaf 19 let down so that the attachment is not in the way.

Various articles of food can be sliced in a simple and effective manner by the use of the present attachment, and, as the rest 4 constitutes an abutment against which the article to be slicedis held, the'slices can be made of uniform thickness with comparative ease. Y

From the foregoing description, taken in connection. with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while 1 have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the apparatus which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, 1 desire to have it understood that the apparatus shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claims appended hereto.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A table attachment of the class described comprising a vertically-disposed casing having an opening at its top, a vertical plate movable inwardly and outwardly through the opening, a device for mounting the casing on a table with the open upper end of the casing flush with the table top, and a leaf extension secured to the casing in a position flush with the table top.

2. The combination with a table having a top, of an attachment therefor comprising a support mounted on the table below the top thereof, a plate-like rest mounted on the support and proj ectable upwardly above the table top and disposed at an angle thereto, and resilient means for projecting the rest upwardly.

3. The combination with a table, of an attachment comprising a support arranged on the table with its upper end flush with the top of the latter, a plate-like rest movably mounted on the support and projectable upwardly, and an extension leaf mounted on the support and disposed when in open position flush with the top of the table.

4. The combination with a table, of a removable attachment thereon, said attachment comprising a vertically-disposed casing open at its upper end, a plate-like rest movable in and out of the opening and disposed at right angles to the top of the table, and yielding means within the casing to urge the plate outwardly.

5. The combination with a table, of an attachment comprising a support, brackets for securing the support to the table, a slidable plate-like rest on the support and projectable upwardly above the top of the. table, an eX- tension leaf carried by the support, and means for holding the extension leaf in open position.

6. An attachment of the class described comprising a chambered casing open at its top, a rectangular plate housed in the casing and movable outwardly through the opening thereof, said plate being fiat to constitute a rest, and means for attaching the casing to -a table in a position to permit the plate to be raised above the table top or depressed below the same. 7. An attachment of the class described comprising a support, means for attaching the support to a table, a plate-like rest on the support adapted to be projected above the top of the table, springs for projecting the rest outwardly, and an extension leaf mounted on the support.

8. The combination of a casing, tongue members secured thereto, brackets engaging the tongue members for mounting the casing on a support, a vertically-projectable rest mounted in the casing, springs for projecting the rest outwardly, and an extensionv leaf carried by the support. Y

9. The combination with a table having a iiat top, a casing secured to the table at one end thereof and having an open upper end means for supporting the extension in open position.
