PUZZLE.
Application filed. November 5, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM F. BARrsorI, citizen of the United States, residing at Edgemoor. in the county of Newcastle and State of Delaware, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Puzzles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in puzzles, and the object of the invention is an improved device of this character that consists essentially of a sheet displaying a plurality of characters or indicia of a difierent nature and sets of leaves associated with said sheet and adapted to be interfolded upon the same, the leaves being formed with openings and being provided in the spaces between the openings with indicia similar to the indicia upon the sheet, and the object of the puzzle being to arrange the leaves of the sets upon the sheet in such a manner that when all of the leaves are inter-folded, the indicia of one kind will be entirely hidden, while the indicia of the other kind will be displayed. And a further object of the invention is an improved puzzle of this character which is susceptible of various applications, although it is particularly adapted for amusement in political campaigns or other contests, in determining the winner, the indicia, in this instance, representing the respective parties of the contest.
\Vith these and other objects in view that will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions and arrangements of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and then point out the novel features thereof in the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, and to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the device as it appears when folded; Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the device as it appears when open; Fig. 3 is a sectional perspective view of the device, with one set of leaves removed; and, Fig. 4: is an end view of the device as it appears when folded.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.
l l l l Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 7, 1909.
Serial No. 461,166.
This device may be single or double, and may appear in pamphlet or book form, or as a souvenir post card to be sent through the mails.
The puzzle consists essentially of a sheet 1 that may be constructed of pasteboard or stout paper or the like, and which displays a plurality of characters or indicia some distinguishable from ing preferably arranged in vertical and horizontal columns or lines, although not necessarily so, and the indicia of various kinds being interspersed in the columns promisouously, as will be seen by reference to the drawings. These characters or indicia may be of any suitable design, according as desired, and in order to render the device more attractive, preferably represent the parties to some prominent contest, such as a political campaign, the respective parties being represented by small photographs or by the initial letters of their surnames, or in any other approved manner.
Two sets of leaves 2 are attached at one edge to the sheet 1, and are designed to be folded over upon the same for a purpose to be presently disclosed. Each leaf 2 is subdivided into sections 3. These sections are in various widths but the sum of the several sections of any one leaf is equal tothe total length of any other leaf of the series. The several leaves or sections thereof are provided with openings a through which some of the indicating data upon the sheet 1 may be read, whereby when the sections are folded upon the sheet, certain matter on the sheet is exposed, while other matter is covered. The several leaves or sections are provided with letters or indicia similar to those appearing upon the sheet 1, so that when one leaf is folded upon the sheet, and the next leaf in order is folded upon the first leaf, some of the characters upon the first leaf may be exposed through the openings in the second leaf, and so on throughout the series. While the openings i and the indicia between the openings are promiscuously positioned, they together, occupy positions on the leaves corresponding with the positions of indicia upon the sheet 1. In other words, the spaces between the openings 4t are 00- cu'pied by letters or indicia, so that said openings and characters correspond in number and relative position with the characters arranged in the various columns on the sheet.
others, the characters be- 1 In that embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawing, two sheets are employed, the same being arranged side by side and being preferably constructed of an integral strip of paper or the like. In'such instance, only three sets of leaves are employed, inasmuch as the middle set may be used in conjunction with either of the other sets and the corresponding sheet. The strip of paper of which the two sheets are formed, is of peculiar construction, having side extensions so as to adapt the device to be folded into a compact structure, as shown in Figs. 1 and i, and to completely surround the sets of leaves when in such position, and admit of the device being sent through the mail without injury to its parts.
In the practical use of my improved puz zle, the sections of the leaves of the two sets are interfolded upon the corresponding sheet 1 until all of the leaves of the two sets have been employed, the operator endeavoring to arrange the leaves and the sections thereof so that all of the indicia of one kind will be hidden, while only the indicia of the other kind will be displayed. When the indicia or characters represent opposing parties to a contest, considerable interest will attach to the working out of the puzzle, since the party having the most characters displayed after the leaves have been interfolded, is declared the winner, or is supposed to be elected, in event of a political campaign.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
l. A puzzle of the character described, comprising a sheet provided with indicia, and sets of leaves adapted to be interfolded upon the sheet each leaf being formed with openings corresponding in relative position with a part only of the indicia on the sheet, a plurality of said openings in the various leaves being adapted to register, and sundry of the openings in some of the leaves corresponding with solid portions of other leaves.
2. A puzzle of the character described, comprising a sheet provided with indicia some distinguishable from others, and sets of leaves adapted to be interfolded upon the sheet, each of the leaves having openings and being provided between the openings with indicia similar to the indicia upon the sheet, the openings and the indicia of a leaf corresponding in number and relative position with the indicia upon the sheet.
8. A puzzle of the character described comprising a sheet provided with indicia, and sets of leaves adapted to be interfolded upon the sheet, each leaf being constructed in sections formed with openings corre sponding in relative position with a part only of the indicia on the corresponding part of the sheet, a plurality of said openings in the various sections being adapted to register and sundry of the openings in some of the sections corresponding with solid portions of other sections.
4. A puzzle of the character described comprising a sheet provided with indicia, and sets of leaves adapted to be interfolded upon the sheet, each leaf being of uniform size and consisting of a plurality of sections of varying widths, the sections being formed with openings corresponding in relative position with a part only of the indicia on the corresponding part of the sheet, a plurality of said openings in the various sections being adapted to register and sundry of the openings in some of the sections corresponding with solid portions of other sections. 7
-5. A puzzle of the character described, comprising a sheet provided with indicia of various kinds, and sets of leaves attached at one edge to the sheet and adapted to be interfolded thereon, the leaves of the sets being of uniform size, and each consisting of several sections of varying width, and the sections being formed with openings and being provided in the spaces between the openings with indicia, the openings and indicia of each leaf corresponding in number and relative position to the indicia on the sheet.
6. A puzzle of the character described comprising a sheet provided with indicia some distinguishable from others, and sets of leaves adapted to be interfolded upon the sheet, and each leaf being formed with open ings and provided between the openings with indicia, the openings and indicia of each leaf being promiscuously arranged and corresponding in relative position with indicia upon the sheet.
7 A ,puzzle of the character described, embodying sets of leaves adapted to be interfolded each leaf being formed with openings and provided between the openings with indicia, a plurality of said openings in the various leaves being adapted to register, and sundry of the openings in some of the leaves corresponding with solid portions of other leaves.
8. A puzzle of the character described, embodying sets of leaves adapted to be interfolded, each leaf being constructed in sections formed with openings and provided between the openings with indicia, a plurality of said openings in the various sections being adapted to register, and sundry of the openings in some of the sections corresponding with solid portions of other sections.
9. A puzzle of the character described, embodying sets of leaves adapted to be interfolded and each leaf being of uniform size and consisting of sections of varying widths, the sections being formed with openings and being provided between the openings with indicia, a plurality of said openings in the various sections being adapted to register, and sundry of the openings in some of the sections corresponding with solid portions of other sections.
10. A puzzle of the character described, comprising a sheet provided with indicia, some distinguishable from others, and sets of leaves adapted to be interfolded upon the sheet and formed with openings corresponding in relative position with a part only of the indicia on the sheet, a plurality of said openings in the various leaves being adapted to register, and sundry of the openings in some of the leaves corresponding with solid portions of other leaves.
11. A puzzle of the character described,
embodying sets of leaves adapted to be interfolded and formed with openings and provided between the openings with indicia, some distinguishable from others, a plurality of said openings in the various leaves being adapted to register, and sundry of the openings in some of the leaves corresponding with solid portions of other leaves.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature .in presence of two witnesses.
