TYPE-"WRITING IMACI-IINE.
Serial No. 403,531.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN E. Banner, citizen of the United States, and resident of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and bltate of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in TypelVriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
lily invention relates to typewriting ma chines and more particularly to means for releasing the feed rolls and for locking them in the released position, and the main object of the invention is to provide simple and efficient means for this purpose.
To the above and other ends which will hereinafter appear, my invention consists of the features of construction, arrangements of parts and combinations of devices to be hereinafter set forth and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
in the accompanying drawings, wherein line reference characters indicate corresponding parts in the various views, Figure l is an enlarged end view of a carriage equipped with the devices of my invention. 9 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view taken transversely through the lefthand end plate of the carriage, the platen being omitted in this view. Fig. 8 is a view corresponding to Fig. 1 except that the parts are shown in their released positions.
I have shown my invention applied in the present instance to a Monarch machine tho h it should be understood that my invention is applicable to various other constructions or styles of typewriting machines.
In the drawings, 1 indicates the slide or supporting back bar of the carriage which provided with upper and lower grooved faces 2 for cooperation with anti-friction balls or rollers, and opposing top and bottom rails, not shown. End plates 3 project forwardly from the ends of the slide bar and are provided with hearin openings to receive a shaft r on which the platen 5 is mounted. Feed roll hangers 6 are pivoted at 7 in apertured lugs 8 which extend forwardly from the slide bar 1. Coiled springs 9 surround the pivots of the feed roll hangers and each spring bears at one end 10 against the bottom wall of the aperture in its associated lug 8 while the other end 11 of the spring bears against the hanger 6 to force the lower end thereof toward the platen. A feed roll shaft 12 is mounted in the hangers 6 and supports main feed rollers 13, which extend through openings in a paper apron let and bear against the platen at the side thereof where the iaper is introduced into the machine.
Each of the feed roll hangers 6 is provided with a lug 15 on the upper side thereof for cooperation with a projection 16 on a rock shaft 17 mounted in bearings in the end plates of the platen frame or carriage. The left-hand end of the rock shaft has secured to it an angular crank arm 18, one portion 19 of which is adapted to bear againsta stop pin 20 projectingfrom the left-hand end plate of the carria e to limit the movement of the crank arm and the parts attached thereto in their movement back to normal position. Hangers 21 are pivoted at 21 in the apertured lugs 8 below the feed roll hangers and each of the hangers ii is pressed toward the platen by a spring 22 which is coiled about the pivot of the hanger and bears atone end against the hanger and at its opposite end against the bottom wall of the aperture in the lug 8. The feed roll hangers 6 are extended below or beyond the feed rollers 1.3 and carry antifriction rollers 23 adapted to bear against the hangers 21 when the parts are moved to the positions shown in 3 and to move the hangers 21 away from toe platen. The hangers 21 support shaft 2%- for the forward set of feed rollers 25 and each hanger 2 carries a leaf spring 26 secured thereto by a screw 27. These springs bear upwardly against the paper apron l t (which is pivoted at its upper rear end on the feed roll release shaft 1'7), so as to effect a pressure of the paper apron against the platen when the parts are in their normal positions. lVhen, however, the main feed rollers are moved to the released position shown in Fig. 3 the hangers 21 will be depressed, thereby carrying the forward set of feed rollers away from the platen and allowing the paper apron to turn on its pivotal support and to move away from the platen.
The construction thus far described is similar to that employed in the Monarch machine and further detail description thereof is deemed unnecessary.
The crank arm 18 is pivoted at 28 to oneelement 29 of the toggle is in the nature of alever and is extended beyond the pivot 30 to provide a finger piece 33. This is preferably formed by turning the metal at-right angles to the plate of the body portion of the lever so as to thereby not only form a finger piece with a flat face presented to the operator, but also to provide a stop which, when the parts are in the positions shown in Fig. 3, is adapted to abut against the toggle link or element 31 and limit the movement of the toggle when operated to lock off the feed rollers.
In the normal positions of the parts the toggle elements are disposed as shown in Fig. 1. By moving the finger piece 33 forwardly, the toggle is moved to the dead center position shown in Fig. 3 and this movement is effective to turn the rock shaft 17, through the crank arm 18, thus forcing the feed roll hangers 6 downwardly to carry the main feed rollers out of cooperative relation with the platen. This same movement as hereinbefore explained, is effective to bring about a movement of the forward set of feed rollers and the paper apron away from the platen.
The parts when in the positions shown in Fig. 3 are locked in the released position by the dead centering of the toggle, the pressure of the restoring springs 9 and 22 being exerted through the shaft 17 and toggle against the fixed pivot 32 in a line extending through the pivots 28, 30 and 32. A slight rearward pressure exerted upon the finger piece 33 is effective however to break the toggle and to enable the parts to return to normal positions.
The toggle release and lock shown in the present arrangement is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and is efiicient in use, the entire releasing and locking means consisting of but two parts.
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. For example, other feed devices than rollers may be employed and only one roller or feed device may be used instead of two as shown.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
