To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK GORKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Adams township, in the county of Lucas and. State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Head- Rests; and I do hereby declare the follow ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention has reference to improvements in head rests for chairs.

The invention is especially adapted for use on barber chairs, although it may be applied to equal advantage on dental, in valid and other chairs where an adjustable and removable head rest may be required.

The object of the invention is to provide a head rest of simple and inexpensive construction which may be adjusted to any of the usual positions required and which when not in use may be instantly swung out of the way without necessitating its removal.

In carrying out my invention I employ the novel combination, arrangement and the details of construction hereinafter shown,

described and specifically pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification in which like characters designate like parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved head rest applied to the back of a chair. Fig. 2 is an elevation thereof, the parts in section being in the plane indicated by the line mm, Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the device, the stem which supports the pad or cushion being in section, indicated by the line y-y, Fig. 2.

Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a main casting which is fixed to the chair back 2 near its upper margin. The casting is substantially channel shaped, having parallel sides 3 and 1 and an integral connecting rear portion 5, screws 6 being directed through the rear portion to securely fasten the same to the chair back. The sides 3 and l are each provided with an elongated groove upon their inner faces as at 7 and 8, the grooves being directly opposite each other to provide a guideway for a sliding stem 9 which carries a pad or cushion 10 at its upper end, the pad having a swinging adjustment about a screw 11 directed Specification of Letters Patent.

through parallel lugs 12 and 13 and the stem 9, the lugs 12 and 13 being extended outwardly from a plate 14 secured to the under side of the pad 10 by screws 15. The pad is held to any of the various positions which it may assume by a removable pin 16 directed through perforations in the lugs 12 and 13 and through one of a series of perforations 17 provided in the upper end of the stem 9.

The stem 9 is provided on one side with a plain rib 18 and on the opposite side with a rib 19 formed with ratchet teeth adapted to be engaged by a spring pawl 20 pivoted between lugs cast integral with the side 4: of the casting 1, the pawl normally engaging the ratchet teeth and holding the sliding stem to any position to which it may be adjusted longitudinally. The pawl is disengaged from the teeth upon the stem by pressing upon the end 21. The stem 9 at its lower end is in the form of a hook 22 which traverses a slot 23 between the sides 3 and 1, the hook extending outward from said slot.

24 is a transverse pin secured between the upper ends of the sides 3 and 4 directly in the path of the hook 22, so that upon sliding the stem in an upward direction as indicated by dotted lines a, Fig. 2, the hook 22 will engage the transverse pin 29:, and the stem 9 may then be swung upon the pin 24: as a pivot, as indicated by the arrows, and be suspended upon the pin out of the way in the position 0. The sliding stem and pad may be instantly restored to their original position by swinging the stem in a reverse direction to that indicated by the arrows, to the position a when the stem is in position to be guided in the casting 1.

From the foregoing description, it is evident that I provide an adjustable head rest for chairs which is simple and inexpensive in construction and which may be instantly swung out of the way when not required for use.

What I claim, is-

1. In a head rest for chairs, a longitudinally slotted main casting adapted to be fixed to a chair back, a pad-supporting-stem slidably mounted in said casting and formed with a hook at its lower end adapted to traverse the slot in the main casting, and a transversely arranged stop fixed at the upper end of the main casting in the path of the hook adapted to engage the hook and serve as a means for suspending the padsupporting-stein therefrom, substantially as described.

2. In a head rest for chairs, a main casting fixed to a chair back, having sides spaced apart to provide a longitudinal slot, a padsupporting-steln guided so as to slide in the main casting, the stem being formed at its lower end With a hook adapted to traverse the slot between the sides of the main cast- 10 ing, and a transverse pin supported upon the main casting in the path of the hook upon the stern, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
