To all whom it may concern..-

Be it known that we, \VILLIAu M. Jones and HARLAND STEWART, citizens of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San F -ancisco and State of Caliprovements in Fastenings for Loops and the Like, of which the following is a specification.

The object of the present invention is to provide means for attaching a hook or loop to an object. In the present instance we show the device in use for attaching a check rein to-a saddle, but it is to be understood that the invention is by no means limited thereto, but couldbe used for many other purposes.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective View of the upper; portion of a saddle to which the deviceis attached; Fig. 2 is a vertical section, showing the same attached to the saddle; Fig. 3 is an end view of the device, the saddle being omitted; Fig. 4 is a longitudinal horizontal section of the same, showing the parts in place; Fig. 5 is a similar view showing the loop pushed in for the purpose of securing it in place.

Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates a saddle -and 2 a metal late resting thereon. Through said plate 2 1s screwed a screw 3, depending from a base or block 4 formed integral with a cylindrical casing 5. Said casing is closed at the rear end by a cap '6 screwed, upon said rear end, and within said casing s a coiled spring 7, which presses against the follower disk 8, which, in turn, is adapted to press against the cross member. 9 of a T-shaped stem 10 of a loop 11. Said loop may be connected to any device which it is desired to detachably secure, as, for instance, a check rein 12. The front end of the casing is formed with a vertical elongated hole or slot 13, just sutliciently long and wide to permit the cross member 9 of the stem of the loop to pass through when disposed vertically. when it is released, the ends of the cross member are pressed by said coiled spring into said recesses.

The loop is held very firmly and securely in the casing, when in its attached position; for, in order to release it, it is necessary not only to press back the follower until the ends of the cross head are opposite to the side recesses in the casing, but also, when in this position, to turn the loop through a right angle. This would never be done accidentally, and therefore the device furnishes a very secure means of attaching a loop or hook-to a stationary device. It is understood that the invention is not limited to the particular form of the loop here shown, as a hook, or, indeed, any other device to which can be attached a stem may, by means of this attachment, be securely connected to another object, although readily detachable when desired.

The advantages of this invention are simplicity of construction, compactness of form, and the facility with which the parts can be assembled. The body portion of the easing is made cylindrical, so that itcan readily be formed with threads for securing the cap in position, and the cap, being removable, admits of readily assembling the parts.
