My invention relates especially to the tabnlating mechanism of typcwriting machines and has for its object to provide improved mechanism of the class specified.
To the above and other ends, the invention consists in the features of construction, combinations of devices and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
My invention is shown as applied to a Remington typewriter, but it is to be understood. that the nature of the invention-is such that it may be adapted to other styles of writing machines.

Referring more particularly tothe tabulat-ing mechanism, this comprises a stop rack-bar 28 supported on angular arms 29 suitably secured to the carriage truck 9. One or more carriage or column stops 30 are detm-hably secured to the rack bar and cooperative with these stops are aset of denominational stops 31 which, as herein shown, project forward from and are integral with the upper ends of a set of upright tIenominational levers 32 arranged slde by side and having open mouth bearings by which they pivotally engage between their ends a fulcrum rod 33 mounted in a hooded frame or supporting bracket, said frame being suitably secured at the rear of the machine. The levers 32 extend straightdown from their pivots through an opening in the base of the machine. The forward edge of each lever 32 is curved at 3:2 substantially concentric with the pivot 33 and a detach able pin 33 extends across the frame 3% near thc curvedportions of the levers so as to a tl'ord a turning of the levers on their pivot pin or rod' but to 'n-event an accidental displacement of the levers from said pivot'pin.

.lYhen so actuated they cooperate with a cross bar 35 supported on arms 36 plvoted at 37 to the frame 34. One of the arms 36 has a forwardly extending horizontal arm 38 which carries an adjustable abutment 39 cooperative with a release lever 40. 'Said release lever is pivoted at 41 to a bracket 42 15. When the bar is pushedforward by one of the denominational levers the abutment 39 will press down the rear arm of the lever 40, elevating the lifting shoe a3 and causing it to swing the rack 15 upward out of mesh with the pinion 18, thereby releasing the carriage from its escapement mechanism and permitting it to be drawn freely leftward across the top plate'under the influence of the usual spring drum -14 with which the carriage is connected by a band or strap The tabulating mechanism as thus far described is not per se ofmy invention and it is not thought a more detailed description is necessary.
Referring now to the novel actuating nlechanisn'i for the tabulating mechanism, this mechanism comprises for each denominational stop lever 32 a member, bar or floating key lever or one having a fulcrum or fulcrmn point, the position whereof varies.

A spring clip 51 is' secured to the rod 48 and cooperates with the frceend of the pin 50 to prevent accidental separation of the dctiuehablc connection between the lever 32 and the rod 48. As will be best seen in Fig. 2, the upper arms of the levers 32 are arranged a letter space distance apart but the lower arms are curved or spread laterally at varying degrees as indicated arms of the levers 32 are spaced sufficiently at 232" so that the lowerfar apart to permit the connections of the rods 48 and levers 40 to be arranged side by side without causing interference between said rods, levers and connections. Each lever 46 is pivoted on an arm or guide link 52, said arm being formed preferably of sheet metal and having vertical side portions 52 which at the rear incline toward each other so as to lie close to or embrace the associate lever 46 at its vertically disposed part, said arm and said lever being pivotally connected as by a rivet or pin, 53 passing from one portion 52 to the other through the lever 46. The arms 52 are inclined to the horizontal and, in thepresent instance, extend downwardly and forwardly from the pivot pins 53 toward the front. of the machine, The side portions 52 of each of said arms incline laterally away from each other from rear to front and are perforated at their forward end portions to receive' a pivot rod 54. Said pivot rod is secured at its ends by screws 55 in angular bracket 50, the horizontal portions of said brackets being provided with slots 57 which receive securing screws 58, said securing screws entering the base frame and thereby detachably and adjuslably securing the brackets 50 and the pivot rod 54 in a lixcd relation with the machine. frame. Various changes besides those noted may be made in my invention without departing from the scope thereof.

In a typewritiug machine and in a tabulating mechanism. the combination of a carriage. a carriage stop. a set of upright denominaliomil stop levers arranged side by arm of sa d up side and pivoted between. their endsto a fixed part, a set of arms' pivoted to a fixed part and normally at an angle to the horizontal, and a set of angular key levers each pivotally connected at its rear directly to the lower arm of one of said denominational stop levers, each of said levers being also pivotally connected directly to one of said tll'lllh'.

In a typewriting machine and in a. tabulating mechanism, the combination of a carriage, a stop thereon, a cooperating stop, a lever for actuating said cooperating stop, said lever having a fixed fulcrum, a pivoted arm, a key lever pivotally connected with said arm and with the first recited lever, a plurality of guides for said key lever, said guides being adjustable laterally of said key lever, and a restoring spring ,for said key lever.

In a typewriting machine and in a talmlat'ing mechanism, the combination of a carriage, a stop thereon, a cooperating stop, a lever for actuating said cooperating stop, said lever having a fixed fulcrum, a pivoted arm, a key lever pivotally connected with said arm and with the first recited lever, guides for said key lever, and stops to limit its movements in both directions.

In a typewriting machine and in a taluilating mechanism, the combination of a. carriage, a carriage stop, a set of denomination'alstop levers having fixed fulcrums, a. set of pivoted arms, a set of key levers each pivotally connected with one of said arms and with one of said denominational stop levers, and a pair of guide or comb )lates cooperative with said key levers to guide them, said guide or comb plates being adjustable laterally of said key levers.

In a typcwriting machine and in a tabulating mechanism, the combination of a carriage, a carriage stop, a set of denominational stop levers having fixed fulcrums, a set of pivoted arms, a set of key levers each pivotally connected with one of said arms and with one of said denominational stop levers, and stops to limit the movements of said key levers in both directions.

In a typewriting machine and in a tabulating mechanism, the combination of a carriage, a carriage. stop, a set of denominational stop levers having fixed fnlerums, a set of )ivoted arms, a set of key levers each pivotally connected with one of said arms and with one of said denominational stop levers, a pair of guide or comb plates eooperating. with. said key levers to guide thenn'Ts't-ops to limit the movements of said key levers in both directions, and a restoring spring for said key levers.

In a typewriting machine and in a tabulating mechanism, the combination of a carriage, a, column stop, tabulating key lovers, guiding means to give each key lever Mane and adapted to operate it, said lever being movable in one direction by hand at or near one end, and guidmg means cotiperatlng with said lever so that when so moved the lever as a whole will be moved bodily in a direction substantially at right angles to the first named direction.

In a typewriting machine and in a tabulating mechanism, the combination of a carriage, a carriage stop, a coiiperating stop, a tabulator key lever operatively connected therewith, and means for causing said key lever when its key is pressed in one direction to move bodily in another direction 19.. In a typewriting machine and in a talmlating mechanism, the combination of a carriage, a carriage stop, a coiiperating stop, an upright lever. operatively connected at one arm with said stop, and a'key lever connected with said upright lever at its other arm and extending toward the front of the machine, the forward end portion of said key levcnheing depressible, and means for causing said key lever as its forward end is depressed to move bodily rearward.
