Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 519,381.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN 1V. SHORT, citizen ot the United States, residing at Geneva, in the county of Ontario and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Syringes, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates to syringes and specially to a syringe adapted to be used in ir rigating and cleansing the vagina.
An object of my invention is to produce a syringe of the above character, which will thoroughly wash the walls of the vagina, and at the same time conduct out of the vagina the foreign matter washed from the walls of the same.
A further object of my invention is to produce a vaginal syringe, which will produce a globular spray.
The final object of my invention is to produce a vaginal syringe, which will be y simple in construction, and the parts forming the same being detachable, whereby said parts may be readily cleaned or sterilized.
My invention consists generally of an outer tube through which the inlet of fluid passes, and a tube arranged within said outer tube for conducting the fluid away.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like numeral references are used to designate like parts throughout the same, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my syringe, Fig. 2 is a horizontal longitudinal sectional view of the same, Fig. 3 is a horizontal longitudinal sectional view of the outer tube, Fig. el is a similar view of the inner tube, Fig. 5 is a horizontal longitudinal sectional view of a cap and members associated therewith, Fig. G is a plan view of a washer, forming a part of my syringe.
In the preferred embodiment of my invention, 1 designates an outer inlet tube, which forms the body portion of my syringe. The outer tube 1 is screwthreaded externally at its lower end, as at 2, and is provided at its opposite end with the tapering enlarged portion 3. The enlarged portion 3 is provided with the outwardly extending flange 4, and adjacent the flange et upon the inner surface thereof, with the outwardly beveled portion 5. The enlarged portion 3 is provided with an enlarged bore G, which communicates with the internal surface of the tube 1, and forms therewith the shoulc er 7.
A cap comprising an enlarged curved body portion S from which projects the tubular portion 9 internally screw-threzuled as at 10, is arranged upon the screw-threaded end 2 of the outer tube 1, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The enlarged Curved body portion S is provided upon its base at a central point thereof, with the tubular nipple 10, upon the outer enlarged end 11 of which may be secured a suitable form of hose. The nipple 10 extends inwardly as at 12, within the curved body portion S, and is internally screw-threaded as at 13. A second tubular nipple 14 is arranged upon the base of the curved body portion S, at one side of the tubular nipple 10', and said tubular nipple 141 is provided with the enlarged end 15 to which may be attached any form of suitable hose. The inner tube 1G has one end thereof enlarged to form the bulbous-shaped portion 17, which forms at its smaller end the shoulder 1S. The opposite end of the inner tube 16 is externally screw-threaded as at 19, in order that the inner tube 16 may be screwed into projection 12 of the tubular nipple 10.
In the assembling of my syringe, a skeleton washer, comprising the spaced concentric circles 20 and 21, connected by the radial strips 22, is arranged upon the shoulder 7, within the outer tube 1. The curved enlarged cap having the screw-threaded tubular projection 9, is screwed upon the screwthreaded end 2 of tube 1. The inner tube 16 is then inserted through the smaller concentric circle 21, and the threaded end 19 thereof, screwed into the projection 12.
By reference to Fig. 2, it is obvious that the enlarged bulbous-shaped portion 17, is spaced away from the beveled portion 5 of the flange el, in order that fluid may pass out of the outer tube 1, exteriorly of the bulbous-shaped portion 17. It is also obvious that the tube 16 is held in the center of the outer tube 1 by the said washer, and that the space-d interval between the bulbousshaped portion 17 and the beveled portion 5 may be varied by increasing` or decreasing the thickness of said washer.
In the use of my syringe, the open end of the same is inserted into the entrance of the vagina, and a suitable liquid introduced through the tubular nipple 14 into the outer tube 1. The liquid passes forwardly through the skeleton washer and passing between the spaced bulbous portion 17 and the beveled portion 5, is splashed into a globular spray upon the walls of the vagina. The liquid after cleansing the walls of the vagina flows out of the same through the inner tube 16 and is conducted to a suitable receptacle. It is to be understood that the enlarged circular cap secured to one end of tube l, closes the entrance to the vagina and prevents the outward flow of the fluid eX terior of said tube 1.
I have found that by the use of my syringe, the vagina is dilated, thus taking out the folds of the same, and allowing the liquid to wash the entire surface thereof. My syringe will spray the liquid upon the walls of the vagina, and by moving the syringe longitudinally within the vagina the entire surface of the same will be completely washed.
It is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the size of the syringe as shown in the drawings, as the same may be made in different sizes as is common in the manufacture of vaginal syringes.
I-Iaving fully described my invention, what I claim is:
l. A syringe of the character described, comprising an outer inlet tube, a removable outlet tube provided with a bulbous-shaped end and having a shoulder arranged within said inlet tube, a removable skeleton washer arranged within said inlet tube and engaging said shoulder of said outlet tube, and said inlet tube being provided with an enlarged end spaced away from said bulbousshaped portion, for producing a globular spray, substantially as described.
2. A syringe of the character described, comprising an outer inlet tube provided with an enlarged portion having an enlarged bore, an enlarged cap screw-threaded upon said 'inlet tube, a supply tube arranged upon said cap for communication withy said inlet tube, an outlet tube arranged within said inlet tube and provided with a bulbous-shaped portion for arrangement within said enlarged bore of said inlet tube, a skeleton washer arranged within said inlet tube and adapted to center' and adjust said outlet tube, a discharge tube arranged upon said cap and projecting within the same and said outlet tube having one end screw-threaded within said discharge tube, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
