To all whom it may concern:

1 Be it :nown that I, LEWIS l3. Jnrrco'r'r, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Monhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Convertible Couch and Bed, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved convertible couch and bed, which can be conveniently converted from a couch into a double bed and vice versa, and when. in the form of a couch the two bed sections are spaced apart to acconiniodnte the bed sections, and when the bed sections are extended they range one alongside the other to form :1 double bed. For the purpose mentioned use is made of a frame on which one bed section is pivoted, and the other bed section is adopted to be raised into an active position or lowered into a, folded position.

A. practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drowings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicote corresponding parts in all the views.

In order to counterbalance the bed section I), use is made of coil springs L, one for each end of the bed section, the coil spring L having preferably two coils and shanks L and L of which the shanks L are attached to the bottom rail of the frame A while the shanks L are attached to. the cross bar of the bed section I). Now when the bed section D moves into a lowermost position, the springs L are compressed, thus preventing a sudden lowering of the bed section D and a too quick swinging over of the bed section U, as the latter is connected by the levers J and the raising and lowering mechanism E with the bed section D.

When the bed sections 0 and D are in the folded position and the bed clothes are stored between the said bed sections, then the upper bed section C receives a light inattiess and cover, so as to provide a couch, and when the bed sections are extended, as shown in Fig. at, they range one alongside the other to form a double bed on which the bed clothes are used.

The folding legs may be dispensed with, and in this case the bed section U is provided with a permanent back, serving as legs for supporting the bed sections C when in an extended or double bed position, and.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. 3. A convertible couch and bed coinprising a frame, a bed section pivoted thereon, a second bed section, a raising and lowering mechanism connected with the said frame and the said second bed section for raising and lowering the same, the said bed sections when in extended position ranging one alongside the other to form a double bed, and when in folded position being one above the other and spaced apart to accommodate the bed clothes between them, the bed sections having end rails, one resting on the other when the bed sections are in folded po sition, levers connecting the said mechanism with the end rail of the pivoted bed section, folding legs on the said pivoted bed section, and links connecting the folding legs with the saidlevers.

d. A convertible couch and bed comprising a frame, a bed section in the frame, raising and lowering mechanism for said section, a second section pivoted to the frame and adapted to fold upon the first section or to extend alongside of said section to form a double bed, said pivoted section being provided with hinged legs, and means connecting the pivoted section and its legs with the raising and lowering mechanism, whereby the legs of the pivoted section will be folded or opened and the section in the frame raised or lowered according as the pivoted section is extended or folded.

5. A convertible couch and bed comprising a frame, a bed section in the frame, at raising and lowering mechanism for the section, a second bed section pivoted to the frame and adapted to fold upon the first section or extend alongside of the same to form a double bed, said pivoted section being provided with pivoted legs, means for operating the raising and lowering mechanism from the pivoted bed section, and a connec tion between the legs and the said means, whereby the legs will be operated thereby.

(3. A convertible couch and bed comprising a frame, a bed section in the frame, raising and lowering mechanism for the section, a second bed section pivoted to the frame and adapted to fold upon the first section or to extend alongside of the same to form a double bed, a counterbalancing coiled spring having shanks, one of which is sectlred to the frame and the other to the bed section in the frame, and means for operating the raising and lowering mechanism from the pivoted bed section.

7.
