Description

JACOB BUMP, OF HARTFORD,A NEW' YORK.
Letters Patent No. 94,181, dated August 31, 1869.
:menor/*ED vnGnTABLn-WAsI-IER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To enable others skilled in the art to construct and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
My invention relates to vegetable-washers, and consists in the novel construction' of a barrel or other suitable-shaped vessel, with series of pins projecting nearly to its centre, and mounting thesame in a frame in such a manner that it can he conveniently and'rapidly rotated.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation, with a portion broken away to show the interior, and
Figure 2 is a vertical section on the line x a: of iig. 1. The object of my inventionA is to provide a cheap yand convenient device for farm-use, for Washing vegetables for any. purpose.
To accomplish this, I construct a hollow vessel, A,
-barrel-shaped, and of auy'size desired, sov as to be strong and water-tight.
Its interior, I provide with pins B, long enough to extend nearly tothe centre of the vessel, as shown in fig. 2, and connect them firmly to the body of the vessel by means of the small blocks a and screws b,
as shown in the same figure, or by any other suitable means.
- These pins may'all be arranged so' as to alternate or be in series; each series being in the same plane, as shown in fig. 2.
In the body or side of the vessel, I make a suitable opening, of any size desired, and .provide it with a closely-fitting block or cover, C, which is held in place by a bar, c, arranged to slide and wedge firmly under cleats, d, or by any other device convenient for the purpose.
The ends of the'vessel A, I provide with gudgeons e, to one of which I attach acrank1hand1e, f, and when thus constructed, mount it in a frame, D, having beal'ings E for the purpose.
In operating my device, I remove the cover C,'put into the vessel, potatoes, turnips, or other vegetables desired to be washed, either for the 'purposes of feed, or`for the market, and then pour in a quantity of Water sufficient for the purpose. This done, I lock or fasten the cover securely in place, and revolve the vessel by means of the, hand-crank f, when the vege tables, as they are rolled and rubbed against each other, aswell as against the pins B, become thoroughly cleaned. They may then he removed and anotherlot washed in a similar manner.
My vegetable-washer may be constructed so as to be portable, or itmay he stationary, and he operated by horse-power.
In this Way, I provide a strong and cheap device for washin g vegetables for farm-use, or for market-purposes, and one which may be conveniently used.
Having thus described my invention,
A vegetable-washer, -consisting of the rotating c ase A, provided with the internally-projecting pins B, said pins being of such a length, and so arranged as to cause the contents of the case to pass between them as it is" revolved, substantially as described.
JACOB BUMP.
