LINING FOR STORAGE BATTERY JARS.

,ing, or brazing; but the present invention 50 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT J. MEIER, 0F GLENDALE, MISSOURI.
' LINING FOR STORAGE-BATTERY JARS. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT J. MEIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glendale, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Linings for Storage-Battery Jars, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention consists in improvements in the manufacture of lead linings for storage battery jars, whereby same are rendered more durable, of better quality, and produced with less labor, and, therefore, de creased cost. The invention is, also, suitable for embodiment in drum traps used in plumbing.
Linings for storage battery jars have heretofore sometimes been made of lead as is contemplated by the present invention, but same have not been made except by pressing, with the result that various seams have been found therein, particularly, at the corners thereof. To get rid of such seams, it'has heretofore been necessary to burn all seams and corners. In the first place, such treatment of these objects involves a great deal of labor, and, therefore, expense, and, in the second place, the heat of burning produces a detrimental chemical action on the lead. The present invention contemplates making said linings of one piece and without the necessity of burning any part thereof. The manner of making same is described in an application for patent for a machine for forming such linin s which I am about to file in the Patent attice (filed Another feature of this invention is the formation of said linings with strengthening ribs or corrugations, said ribs being preferably longitudinal, and said ribs being preferably on the periphery .of said linings or upon the inner circumference thereof. A transverse strengthening rib is, also, prq vided. Floor ribs in a shape like channel irons have heretofore been attached to the inside of the bottom of such linings'by burndoes away with'the necessity of so burning said floor ribs, as it is herein contemplated that same will, also, be formed in one piece with the rest of the lining. v
In the drawings forming part of this specification, in which like numbers of refer- Specification of ietters Patent. Patented Nov. 30, Application filed November 6,

ence denote like parts wherever they occur, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lining of the kind mentioned above; Fig. 2 is a top plan View of same; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3, Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a similar sectional view of a modification.
Every part herein mentioned is preferablymade of lead, and the whole is composed of one piece. Thus the side wall 1 is integral with the bottom 2, as are,-also, the floor ribs 3, the feet 4, and the corrugations or strengthening ribs 5, and the rim or transverse strengthening rib 6., The feet 4 serve to raise the lining from the floor of the storage battery jar. The ribs .3 are shown in the drawings as formed like channel irons, but may project directly from the floor 2. They serve to hold or support any object that may, as in ordinary use, be placed within same. The ribs 5 so strengthen the wall 1 as to make it firm, and prevent its buckling, and the same purpose is sub-.
served by the transverse rib or rim 6. The rim 6 is preferably formed with an L-sha ed part 7 projecting outwardly from the wall 1, and surrounded by a partially overlapping L-shaped flange 8. The ribs 5 may be either all upon the outside of the lining, as shown in Figs. 1 and 8, or all upon the inside thereof, as shown in Fig. 4, or part may be inside and part outside.
Havin thus described my said invention, what I c aim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A lead lining for storage battery jars composed of side walls, a bottom, a series of ribs on each of said side walls arran ed in spaced relation and extending the ength thereof, a rim carried by the side walls formed with an outwardly projecting L- shaped part and a partially overlapping L- shaped flange surrounding said L -sha ed part, all of said recited elements being formed in a single integral piece.
2. A lead lining for storage battery jars composed of side walls, a bottom, a series of ribs on each side wall extendingparallel thereto and lengthwise thereof, and a continuous L-shaped member at the tops of the sidewalls acting asa transverse strengthening element.
3. A lead lining for storage battery jars composed of side walls, a bottom, a plurality of vertical strengthening ribs carried by each side wall, and a series of transverse overlapping L-shaped strengthening memchannel members on the inner face of said 10 bers at the tops of the side walls surroundbottom, all of said parts being formed in one ing the latter. integral piece.
