Description

E. J.' ANTHONY. .RAIL BRAGE FOR RAILWAYS. APPLICATION FILED MAR. 24. 1909.
:941 ,698. Patented Nov. 30, 1.909.v
To tall-whom 'it may concern:
Be it known thatfI, EDMUND J. An'inon Y, a eitizenof the 4United States, residing at lfrookview,` Rensselaerv county, New York, have invented certain newy and useful 1m a full; clear', and' eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled,
in the art to which it apperta-ins to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked ftheret/in, which form a part of this specification. A
The object of my invention is tgp'ovide a novel and improved form o lz'iilway-rail brace, which shall be simpl fin construction, of few parts, and thoroughly ellicient and durable in use and operation.
The brace of my invention isspecially applicable for use on curves of railway-tracks, but may be used in any other situation where its 'application may be found to be eliicacious and desirable.
With the above object in view, the invention comprehends the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described in the specification, summed up in the claims, and illustrated in the, drawing.
In the accompanying drawing, forming part of my application for patent, and in'- which like letters of reference denote cor'- responding parts throughout. both views: Figure 1 is a side `elevation of my iinpi'ove-` ments, as applied to a railway-rail, shown in transverse sectifn, and Fig. 2 is a front elevation of myrimprovenients.
Referring, now, in detail tothe drawing: 'Ilie metallic tie A, the railway-rail.chair B, the rail-clamping member'C, and the bolt c are identically the saine as those disclosed in my application for patent signed and exccuted and tiled .in the Patent Oflicey of even date herewith, for an invention entgitled Iinpioven'ients in railway-rail locking.

composed, essentially, of the following parts: i
u y Patented Nmlnt), l1909.'v i l Application tiled March 24, 1909. `Serial No. 485.464, i i i An inclined leg d resting at its bottom on lar portion rl -iniinediately abovethe leg and adapted to-restsquarely against the side of ther bridge-portion b of thev chair B, and an inclined arm d extending from the top ofl portion'iof the top ilangec of the railway` such perpendicular portion d Ato tlie'underf railvEi' Toward the top ofsucli arm d2, the
side thereoff-nextthesveb'e `of the rail E is beveled, as shown atA d, so tirati e arm will, at this point, bear squarely a'gains\the 4web tion cl with the arin d2, the side of the br( e" next to the bottoni flange c2 of the rail 1 bcar'upon the top of the flange c2.
'A further distinguishing feature of the rail-brace is the wings d5, which project from each side of the arni el and the vertical portion fl, extending longitudinally of said of the -strain from the other parts of the brace and assist in steadying and bracing therail. The vertical portion deof the brace is provided with an aperture d".
Passing through the raitclamping incinber (l and through the ai'ierture d* of" the ail-brace'is the'bolt c, carrying an adjusting-nut c2, by which the brace l) may be clamped tothe rail ll and to the raiLchairl (whit-Iris. iii turn, secured to the tie A), and held against movement; the whole forniinga `rigid and iinn'iovable structure.
lt is A nl v purpose to construct the railbrace l) in varying lengths. measuifeilffroin aline drawn from the aperture (ZS to the top end 10;. y,
- It will be noted that my device presents cxtreme, simplicity, that it may be applied to the i'ail by even inexperienced workmen, that it is susceptible ot' manufacture and sale at a nominal ligure, that it is durable and ellieieiit in use and operation, aiidthat it may be quickly removed.
Aedith-,ations in detail may be made and will,I inffact, readilysuggest themselves to those skilled in the art, but. all such modi-v fications and changes as come within/the?" morti-sed, so as to foi-in a shoulder d", to
terms of the appended claims constitute no departure from the invention, and fall within the scope andpurviewjthereof.
Havin thus fully described my invention, what I c aim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is: y
1. A railway-rail brace, comprising an inclined leg adapted to be disposed on top of the base of a metallic tie, a vertical portion ada ted to be disposed against the side of the ottom iange of the railway-rail, an inclined arm extending from the top of said vertical portion an terminating beneath the to adapte to bear against the web of the rail, Wingsextending longitudinally of said arm and projecting from the two sides thereof andbearing against the bottom iange of the rail, and means for holding the railbrace t the rail, against movement.
flange of the railway-rail and.
2. A railway-rail brace, comprising an inclined leg adapted to be disposed on top of the base of a metallic tie, a vertical portion ada ted to be disposed against the side of the ottom flange of the railway-rail, an inprojecting from the two sides thereof and bearin against the bottom fiange of the rail, and aolt, carryin a nut, passing through said brace to hold t ie same to the rail.
In testimony whereofl aiiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses; EDMUND J. ANTHONY.
