To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE A. BARNES, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match- Scratchers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements .in a combined cigar cutter and match scratcher, and has for its object, among other things, to produce a device of this character which will be simple in structure, compact in size, effective in operation, and neat and pleasing in appearance.

To these, and other ends, my invention consists in the combined cigar cutter and match scratcher, having certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, in which like numerals of reference designate like parts in the several figures; Figure l is a perspective view of my improved device; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the cutter in detail; and Fig. 3 is a plan View thereof.

In the practice of my invention I provide a body member, herein shown as being formed of a single piece of metal having two parallel sides 1-2 joined at one end and turned outwardly at their free ends to form the sides 34 of a trough. Between the said sides, and slidable therein, is the cutter 5, having a finger grip 6 at one end, a lug 7 near the other end which cooperates with the groove 8 in the side 1 to limit the movement of the cutter in one direction, and a knife edge 9 upon one side which projects up into the trough.

Through the sides 1 and 2 is an opening 10 and through the cutter is an opening 11 having one side 12 beveled to form a cutting edge which registers with the opening 10 when the cutter is in its retracted position.

In operation as a cigar cutter the cutter is moved manually within the body member by grasping the grip 6 after the tip of the cigar has been placed so that it projects through the openings 10 and 11 and is en- Specification of Letters Patent.

This means for scratching matches is most effective, as the friction on the knife edge insures a successful operation and without knocking off the head thereof or breaking the stick.

Applicant is aware that match scratcher-s of the type shown in Letters Patent No. 582,387, have been heretofore designed and does not therefore claim such construction.

There are minor changes and alterations that can be made within my invention, aside from those herein suggested, and I would therefore have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction herein shown and described, but claim all that falls fairly within the sprit and scope of my invention.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a device of the character described; a trough shaped guideway having sides which flare outwardly from the bottom thereof and away from each other with a knife edge therein projecting slightly above the said bottom.

2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a body member hav ing oppositely disposed portions which flare outwardly and form a trough therebetween; and a member connected with said body member having a knife edge upon one side thereof arranged and held so that said knife edge projects into said trough.

3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a body member having two parallel sides which are connected at one end and flare outwardly at their free ends forming a trough therebetween; and a member having a knife edge upon one side thereof mounted between the sides of said body member so that said knife edge projects into said trough.

4. In a device of the character described, the combination with a body member having a trough therein; of a member slidably mounted in said body member having a knife edge upon one side thereof which projects into said trough; and means for limiting the sliding movement of said latter member, comprising an offset lug thereon op erative within a groove in said body member.

In a device of the character described, the combination with a body member formed of a single piece of metal and having two parallel sides 1 and 2 turned out Wardly at their free ends to form the sides 3 and 4: of a trough; of a member 5 between 10 said sides having a knife edge 9 thereon which projects into said trough.
