cheap. means for bladin tBe it known that LJoruf E. SNYDER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Swissva1e,in the county of Allegheny and State ofPennsylvania, have made a new and useful Invention in 'lu'rbine- Blading, of whichthe following is a specification.
.This invention relates to elastic fluid turbines and more. particularly to blading for turbines.
t- A n-object ofthis invention is the. produc-i,
'tion of a' simple, eflect-ive and relatively turbines.
. flwo methods of blading turbines are now quite generally employed. Each method employs blade-carrying elements provided vwithblade mounting slots, in which the blades are secured. Each slot is adapted to receive but. one row of blades.
-The method most-generally utilized employs separate calking or spacing ,pieces which are located in the blade-mounting slot between adjacent blades of a row and which are transversely expanded by a call:- ing pressure and caused to grip the exposed feces of the blades and the walls of the slot and to thereby secure the blades to the bladecarrying element. 7
in the other method the blades are assembled in segmental strips and the strips are then secured into the blade-mounting slots. Various means are employed for as- .sembling the blades in segmental strips and various ineanshave been employed for. se
curing the segmental rings to the blade-can rying elements. The most commonly emfployed is a segmental base strip which is provided with slots in which the faces of the blades aresecured and which, af-fter the blades are in place, is mounted, by means of a calking strip, into the blade-mountingslot. My invention is entirely difierent from either of these methods of mounting blades r but, while it is unlike both of them, it'is in some respects similar to each of them. :I contemplate providlng blade-mounting slots in the blade-carrying elements, each of which are adapted to receive more than one row of blades. The blades of each row are spaced by means of spacing pieces which are between adjaseat blades and which, with the blades, are secured in place by means of segmental base rises. p

Figure cordance with my invention; Fig. 2' is a perspective View of a modified form oi lock- 111g strip; F g. 8 1s a tragmental'scctioir of a blade-carrying element along the line A-A of Fig. 9 and discloses :1 modified form of the blade-mounting slot; Fig; 9 a section along the line 8 B of Fig. 8; and, Fig. 0 is a perspective view 0t. a detail of my invention.
Throughout the specification and 'in'the claims, I will utilize 'the word blade in its broadest sense, that is, to moan eitl'ie'r the rotating or the stationary blades and I wish. it to be understood that I do not desire to limit my invention to either the stationary or the rotating blades and it will be obvious to those skilled in theart that my invention may be employed in mounting the blades of rotary compressors, exhausters and like machines as well as in mounting turbine blades.
Referring to the drawings and more par ticularly to Figs; 1 and 2: the blade-carrying element 11 is provided with a blademounting slot 12"whioh is formed in the peripheral face ofthe blade-carrying ele-' "inentsandwhich is adapted to receive three rows of blades 13. lntorn'iediate spacing pieces More located within the slot'and between adjacent blades of each row, and these in place by means of segmental blade-holdmg rings 19 which arelocatcd within the slot and which are in turn secured to the blade-carrying element by means of seg= mental locking strips 15, which are located within the blade-mounting slots and are secured to the blade-carrying element by means of screws 16.
A. notch 17 out in each edg of each spacing pieces, With the blades, are secured blade 13 and is'located near one end of the i so as to secure the wire 22 within the recess blade. The spacing pieces let are so constructed that their top and bottom faces are parallel toeach other and plain. -The lat- 1 eral faces are also parallel to each other and extend at ri ht angles to the top and bottom faces; glue end face, whileit is perpendicular' to the top and bottom faces, is concave and conforms in contour to the contour of the convex faces of the blade. The other tom faces and 1s convex, conforming in contour to the concave face of the blades.
Each lateral face of the spacing pieces 15 provided with a longitudinally-extending notches 17 of adjacent blades when the within the blz'ide-inonnting slot 12. A lonformed by the slot and the notches and slots l i and 15. Segments of two bladeholding rings l9are then introduced into 1 the slot and are located back to back. The
head 26, formed on the segment of the ring adjacent to the blades located within the slot, cooperates with the notches of the blades and the slots of the spacing pieces to lock them in place, and the flange 27, formed end face is perpend'cular to the top and bot- 1 on that. segment, cooperates with an over-' hanging shoulder 28, formed on the wall of the slot 12, to hold the segment in place. The segments of each ring are then locked p in place by securing a segment of locking slot 18 which is adapted to register with the strip 15 to the ridge 23 by means of the 3 screws 16. This method is pursued until all pieces and the blades are located in place 1 itudinally-extending groove 20 is provided a in one of the side walls of the slot 12 and is located near the top of the slot. This groove 20 is adapted tocoiiperate with the notches 17 and slots 18, formed respectively on one side of the blades and spacing pieces assemtudinally-extending wire of the blades of the first row and the blademounting rings employed to secure them in place are secured to the blade-carrying element.
