Description

W. B. FLANDERS.
TURBINE BLADE.
APPLICATION FILED r1113. 7, 1911.

WITNESSES: INVENTOR' J} \NW 3%. 5mm Qw/WQ UNITED STATliS PATENT OFFICE.
WARREN B. FLANDERS, 0F PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR, BYEMESNE AS SIGNMIENTS, TO THE COLONIAL TRUST COMPANY, TRUSTEE, OF PITTSBURGH, PENN- SYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
TURBINE-BLADE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 14, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, \VARREN B. FLANonRs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have made a new and useful Invention in Turbine- Blades, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for securing blades or vanes to a blade holding element.
As an example of the application of the invention I have illustrated blades for Parsons type turbine secured to a base strip by suitable fastening devices.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a fragmental perspective view vof a base strip to which a plurality of blades are attached; Fig. 2 is a plan View of the base strip, the blades being shown in section; Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective View. of one of the inserts or fastening devices for securing the blades and base strip together.
A preferred embodimentrof myinvention is illustrated in the drawings as comprising a base strip 5 having a straight side 6 and an incline side 'T; the incline side being adapted to fit in an undercut portion in a groove ir the element which is adapted to receive it. The strip 5 is illustrated as being provided with a plurality of approximately comma-shaped openings 8, whichextend laterally through the strip 5 and which are adapted to receive the ends of blades 9. The contours of the blades are concavo-convex, that is, the convex face 10 of each blade 9 will be of approximately the same shape as the edge 11 of the opening 8 which receives it. The thickness of each blade 9 is less than the width of the opening 8 so that the space between the concave portion 12 of each blade and the edge 13 of the opening 8 may be filled by an insert or filler piece 14. The filler piece or insert 1a is best shown in Fig. t as being approximately comma-shaped in cross section. The blades and inserts may be introduced into the openings 8 of the base strip and the inserts swaged or calked into the sockets or openings 8 so as to upset them; that is, change the cross sectional area of the insert and thereby securely fasten the roots of the blades 9 in the base strip.
Units comprising a base strip, blades and inserts or packing pieces may be made of any desiredlengths ready to be inserted into the turbine element to receive them. The preferred form of base strip will be that shown in Fig. 1 so that the base strips may be put in grooves and fastened in by wedges in a manner commonly employed at this time; however, it is obvious that the particular form of base strip shown is not essential to my invention.
Having thus described my invention What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination of a base strip having approximately comma-shaped openings, blades in the openings and inserts filling the spaces between the faces of the blades and edges of the openings.
The combination with a base strip having a plurality of openings therein, blades fitting in the openings and packing ieces for securing the root-s of the blades 1n the openings in the strip, the packing pieces being of approximately the same cross-sectional area as the spaces which are to receive them.
3. The combination with a base strip having comma shaped openings, blades in the openings and having their convexed faces conforming to one side of an opening in the strip, and a packing piece interposed in the opening between a concave face of the blade and one edge of the opening.
4.. A base strip having a plurality of openings, a blade for each opening and havin its convex side bearing against one edge 0 the opening, a space being formed between the convex side of the blade and the opensubscribed my name this 3rd day of Febing, and a packing piece insertible in said ruary, 1911, space to fasten the blade in its opening, the
packing pieces being of approximately the V WARREN FLANDERS' 5 same cross-sectional area as the spaces-which Witnesses:
are to receive them. C. W. MQGHEE,
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto B. M. FERO.
