Application filed August 2, 1909. Serial No. 510,988.
ENVELOP.
941i $2.3 Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that l. JUHA) Mammy, a subject of the'liing of Hungary, residing atlassaic. in the. county of lassaic and State otNew Jersey, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Envelops. of which the following is a specification, reference being had thereindo tl e accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to envelop t'asteners. and the invention has for its objects to provide a fastcuerol a simple and inexpensive constructionthat can be easily applied to an envelop to positively seat and close the same, and to provide an envelop will a fastener that cannot be tampered with or opened without detection (lther objects of my invention are to pro vide an envelop fastener thatcan be advanlageouslvused in connection with large en velops. a. used h ex n'ess companies and railways. and to providea fastener that can he easilv and tIlll'lilV closed without in'url ing or inarriug the envelop or the contents therein.
These and such other ohjectsas may hereinaft r agpcar are attained by a fastening device that will he presently described in detail and then claitued,.:ind reference will now be had to the drawing forming a part of. this pt-t'lllt'atl ti. wherein Figure l is a rear elevation of an envelop provided with tn v improved fastener, illus trating the envelop in a closed position. l ig. '3 is a similar view of the envelop in an open position. l ig. 3.is a longitudinal sectional view of the, envelop showing a portion of the fastener. Fig. l is a side elevation of a detached sealing inc-tuber forming part of the lasteneipl ig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view ot the same, Fig. (3 is a longitudinal sectional View of a portion of the euvelop ta ken on the line X-X of Fig. 1, Fig. 7 is a similar view taken on the. line YY of Fig.
and l ig. 8 is a perspective view of a detached portion of the. fastener.
in the drawing l denotes the body of an envelop having cud tlaps 2' adapted to fold upon the bod 1, a bottom flap 3 adapted to fold upon the end llaps 2, and a top or sealing tiap l adapted to fold upon the end flaps 2 and the bottom flap 13. That portion of the fastener carried by the flaps) and 3 comprises a metallic stirrup 5 adapted to straddle the ends of the laps 2 and 3 when t'olded. saidstirrup having one side thereof within the envelop and the other without. 'lo secure the stirrup to the flaps 2 and 3, the ends of the stirrup are provided with openings 5 and a staple 7 is adapted to extend through the openings and the flaps 2 and 3 and have the inner ends thereof clenched or bent upon the stirrup, as at 8.
The upper side of the stirrup 5 adjacent to the fastened eud'thcreof is provided with a vertical pin 9 having a spear shaped head 10. That portion of the fastener carried by the top or sealing flap -l comprises an oval plate it having the ends thereof provided with integral staples or prongs 12 adapted to extend through the end of the flap/l and have the ends thereof clenched or bent upon the (tap. as at 13. The plate 11 is provided with a central opening 1- and with a hollow button 15. the latter forming a Socket to receive the. spear shaped head 10 of the pin 9 when the llap l is pressed into engagement with the tlap 3. as best shown in Figs. 1 and (3 of the drawing. Of course the flap 4 is pierced by the pin 9 when" pressure is brought to bear upon the hollow button 15 to three. said button into engagement with the pin ot' the stirrup 5. I
'lho envelop fastener is made of light and durable metal and can be made of various sizes according to the character of envelop in connection with which the fastener is used.
llaving now described any invention what i (.ltllttl as new, is 7 In an envelop tion with an envelop havingend flaps, a hottoni flap, and a top tlap, of a stirrup adapted to straddle the ends of said bottom and end flaps, a pin carried hy said stirrup and having a spear shaped head, a socket ineniber rarricd by said top flap and adapted to receive the spear shaped head of said pinasaid socket nientber comprising a plate having a central opening. prongs carried by said plate and adapted to hold the same in engagement with said t'lap. and a hollow button -arried by said flap to provide a socket for the head of said pin.
' fastener, the combine-t- 2. In an envelop fastener, the combination with an envelop having end flaps, a bottom flap and a top flap a stirrup adapted to straddle the ends of said bottom and end flaps, .a staple for securing said stirrup to said flaps, a pin carried 'by said stirrup, a
spear shaped head carried by saidpin, and a socket member carried by said top flap and 1 adapted to receive the spear shaped head of said pin. s
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
