C. S. ALVERSON. ADJUSTING APPLIANCE FOR TYPE WRITING MACHIN APPLICATION FILED DEC. 2, 1907.

ATTORNEY tile TATJEN @FFEQE.
cA zlY S. ALVERSON, OF SAIT DIEGO, CALIFORNIA.
ADJUSTING APPLIANCE FOR TYPE-V I'EITING. MACHINES.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Canny S. Anvnnsox, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California have invented a new and useful Adjustable rlttachment for Type- W'riting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in a platen for a typewriter to which the paper is applied for the purpose-of writing. The platen is provided with adjustable worm and gear shifting attachments for the purpose of systematically adjusting the paper for replacing a figure or letter after the paper has been removed from the typewriting machine and returned again. With this adjustable platen appliance, and attachments, the user may quickly return a paper to the machine and adjust it to the proper position for replacing one or more letters as the occasion may require, and by the aid of the indicator, which is part of the adjustable appliance, it is possible to very accurately and quickly move the platen into position which is shown by the indicator needle or pointer when it is in perfect line horizontally or in a perfect position vertically-"for re-inserting any figure or letter that it may be desired to replace therein. I attain these objects by the mechanism illus trated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a broken front elevation of parts of a typewriting machine showing my attachments thereto. Fig. l is a sectional View of the paper finger or pointer. Fig 2 is a top plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a. detail view of the arm for adjusting the platen longitudinally, and Fig. 4 .is a detailed sectional view on the line cvae of Fig. 1.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A is a platen to which the adjustable improvements are attached.
B is the shaft which is inserted through the center of the platen A and has on eitherend a wheel C which is used for turning the platen back and forth when desired to be moved rapidly.
The lever .D and wheel E are elements of the line spacing appliance such as is now employed on tvnewriters but which does not constitute part of my invention.
F indicates parts of'the frame of the car- Patented Nov. 23, 1909. Serial No. 404,654.
The part of the frame or bracket F isprovided with a slot R running transversely to the platen shaft. extends through said slot and carries a worm H on its lower end adapted to mesh with a gear J on the platen shaft. Said auxiliary shaft is also provided with a.button N on its upper end, a fixed collar L arranged below the slot R and a movable collar L arranged above said slot and pressed by a spring M abutting at its opposite ends against said movable collar and the button N. Lugs R are formed on the upper surface of the bracket F, midway of the slot R, for the purpose of holding the shaft K in one end of the slot or the other. The position of this slot may be changed by raising the spring pressed collar L. It will be noted that when the auxiliary shaft is arranged in the right hand end of the slot, as shown in Fig. 4, the worm H will lo'ev out of mesh with the gear J thereby allowing the platen shaft to revolve freely during the operation of the typewriter. It will also be noted that the moving of the auxiliary shaft to the lefthand end of the slot will bring the worm H into mesh with the gear J permitting the platen shaft to be revolved by turning the button on the end of the auxiliary shaft for the purpose of fractional line spacing.
O designates two keys whereby the platen A is splined on the shaft Band said platen is ada ted to slide longitudinally on said shaft 'reely and without binding.
An arm P is provided with a forked end P and is mounted on the screw-threaded portion 1?. of the shaft Q as shown at U in Fig. 2. Said forked end P engages a groove in the collar or sleeve A on the platen.
S is a. button or moves the platen A longitudinally to a proper adjustment.
T is a collar on the end of shaft Q which holds it in position. Y
V is an indicator or pointer which indicates the proper position of the paper for re-insertin the letter,'that works in conjunction with the adjustable appliance.
W' is a casing which holds a spring Z in to turn shaft Q, which slides- An auxiliary. shaft K connection with. indicator V. Said'spring engages a groove Y on the shaft X.
I am aware that prior to my invention some of the diflerent parts of the typewriting-machine shown here in the drawings .which form a part of the specification to my improvements have been patented, and therefore, do not claim those parts to be new and patentable, but simply show them as parts of the typewriting machine to which my improvements are attached all of which are intended to work in conjunction with each other for the purpose of accomplishing the objects set forth in the specifications.
I claim:
1. In a typewriter, the combination, with the carriage, of the platen carrying shaft,
the platen splined on said shaft, another shaft arranged parallel to the platen and having a screw threaded portion, an arm mounted on said screw threaded portion of said shaft and having its end forked and engaging a groove in a sleeve on said platen,
and means to rotate said second shaft for the purpose of moving said platen longi tudinally 'on said carriage.
' 2. In a typewriter, the combination, with the carriage, of the platen carrying shaft, the platen splined on said shaft, another shaft arranged parallel to-the platen and having a screw threaded portion, an arm mounted on said screw threaded portion of said shaft and having its end forked and engaging a groove in a sleeve on said platen, means to rotate said second shaft. for the purpose of moving said platen longitudinally on said carriage, and means to revolve said platen for the purpose of fractional line spacing.
