Description

J. J. FITZGERALD.
PENHOLDEE ATTACHMENT.
APPLIGATION FILED JUNE 25, 1909.
7 Patented Nov. 23, 1909.
UNQTTE j JAMES J". FITZGERALD, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
PENHOLDER ATTACHBEENT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES J. FITZGERALD, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Alle gheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Penholder Attachments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to penholder attachments, and the invention has for its obj ect to provide a pen-holder with a detachable ink eraser, comprising a sand rubber and a knife blade, the latter when not in use being shielded to prevent the knife blade from being injured or injuring a person using the pen-holder in the ordinary manner.
My invention aims to obviate the necessity of having separate implements for erasing or removing ink, and to provide the end of a penholder with two implements or de vices that can be easily used for the purpose for which they are intended, said devices be ing retained in an operating position by a holder located upon the end of a pen holder and common to both of said devices.
The invention will be hereinafter considered in detail and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing forming a part of this specification, wherein there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, and it must be understood that the structural elements thereof can be varied or changed, as to the size, shape and manner of assemblage without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is an elevation of a pen-holder attachment partly broken awayand partly in section, Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevation of a portion of the same, and, Fig. 3 is a plan of the same.
In the drawings 1 denotes a pen-holder of the conventional form having the upper end thereof reduced or contracted, as at 2.
3 denotes a sleeve adapted to fit upon the reduced end 2 of the pen-holder, said sleeve being split, as at at. The upper end of the sleeve 3 is provided upon one side thereof with upwardly extending holders 5, these holders being arranged in parallelism with the forward edges thereof shaped to provide gripping arms 6 forming a socket 7, while Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 25, 1909.
Patented Nov. 23, 1909.
Serial No. 504,316.
the rear edges of said holders are shaped to provide semi-cylindrical gripping arms 8. The arms 6 and S are made resilient to frictionally engage erasing devices. One device consists of a piece of sand rubber or abrading material 9, while the other device consists of a knife blade 10 having the rear edge thereof bound by a strap 11. This strap is adapted to fit in the socket 7 and be frictionally held by the arms 6 for exposing the knife blade 10 for scratching or erasing purposes. Vith the knife blade reversed from the position shown in Fig. 3, the arms 6 are adapted to frictionally hold the knife blade and prevent said blade from being injured or injuring persons using the pen-holder l.
The attachment is made of light and durable metal that can be nickel-plated or otherwise finished to present a neat appearance in connection with a pen-holder.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new is l. The combination with a pen holder having the upper end thereof reduced, of a split sleeve adapted to fit upon the reduced end of said holder, upwardly extending parallel holders carried by said sleeve, resilient gripping arms carried by the forward and rear edges of said holders, the gripping arms at the rear edge of said holders being semi-cylindrical in form to grip the sides of a sand rubber, the gripping arms at the forward edge of said holders providing a socket to receive a knife blade having the rear edge thereof provided with a strap, substantially as described.
2. An attachment for pen-holders, comprising a sleeve, upwardly extending holders carried thereby and having the front andrear edges thereof provided with resilient gripping arms, the arms at the rear edges of said holders being adapted to hold a sand rubber, and a reversible knife blade adapted to be held by the arms at the front edges of said holders.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
J AWES J. FITZGERALD.
