DOUBLE-ACTING SPRING-HINGE.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMLL BOMMER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in New York, in the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Double Acting Spring-Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in the double-acting spring-hinge for which Letters Patent No. 898,031 were granted to me on September 8, 1908, the improvements being designed with a view of simplifying and cheapening the construction of the hinge.
In practically testing the double-acting spring-hinge referred to, it was found that the use of the ball-bearings for the same rendered it considerably expensive, for the reason that it was necessary to have two ballbearings in each double-acting spring-hinge, and as there are four spring-hinges, namely, two for each door, four ball bearings are necessary for each door and eight ballbearings for a pair of doors. In many cases, however, the doors, especially those of lighter weight, can be used with almost the same facility with double-acting spring-hinges without ball-bearings, by substituting therefor simply a loose cylindrical washer, by which the appearance of the double-acting spring-hinge is preserved, while the cost of the same is considerably reduced; and for this purpose the invention consists of a double-acting spring-hinge which comprises two spring-barrels, a web connecting said barrels, a flange for each spring-barrel provided with perforated ears at its upper and lower ends, pintle-sockets attached to said ears, two fixed spring-holders located at diagonally opposite ends of the respective spring-barrels, loose washers interposed between the diagonally arranged fixed springholders and the pintle sockets respectively below and above the lower and upper ends of the barrels, adjustable tension-collars at the diagonally opposite ends of the respective spring-barrels interposed between the extreme upper and lower ends of the springbarrels and the pintle sockets, the adjustable tension-collars being provided with interior spring-holding lugs extending into' the barrels for receiving the ends of the springs that are interposed between the fixed springholders at one end and the adjustable ten- Specification of Letters Patent.

The accompanying drawing represents a side-elevation and a vertical section of a pair of double-acting spring-hinges containing my improvements. v
The general construction of my improved double-acting spring-hinge is the same as that shown and described in the prior patent referred to. The spring-hinge consists of two spring-barrels a, a, which are connected'by a plate or web 6 that extends between the two spring-barrels. The springbarrels are provided with flanges c, 0 at the upper and lower ends of which are arranged perforated ears (Z, (Z at right angles to the flanges and through the perforations of which the pintles i of the spring-barrels are passed. At the upper end of one springbarrel and at the lower end of the other spring-barrel are arranged adjustable tension collars f, f, which are provided at the inside of the spring-barrels with seats or lugs for receiving one end of the spiral springs s, s that are located in the springbarrels. In the opposite ends of the springbarrels are located fixed spring-holders g, 9 which are likewise provided with seats or lugs for receiving the opposite ends of the springs 5, s said spring-holders being rigidly attached to the ends of the spring-ban rels preferably by suitable pins g which pass through holes in the spring-barrels int-o sockets g in the spring-holders. For the stronger and larger sizes of double-acting spring-hinges pintle-sockets e, c are em ployed. Adjacent to the fixed spring-holders g, g and interposed between the same and the adjacent pintle-sockets are loose washers h, 7L of cylindrical shape, which are made of the same size as the exterior portions of the tension-collars, and which take up the weight of the load and reduce the friction of the same with the upper end of one spring-barrel and with the pintle socket below the opposite springbarrel. The pintles 2' pass centrally through the perforations of the ears of the flanges, pintlesockets, tension-collars, springs, springholders, and loose washers and are provided at their upper and lower ends with ballshaped tips or terminals 2' which are screwed onto the threaded ends of the pintles or otherwise attached thereto. One loose washer h is located adjacent tothe fixed spring-holder g at the extreme lower end of the spring-barrel a, while the loose washer k is located adjacent to the fixed springholder 9 at the extreme upper end of the other spring-barrel a both washers being located outside of the spring-barrels and respectively between the lower and upper edges of the spring-barrels a, a and the adjacent pintle-sockets 6, 6
The loose washers h, h besides reducing the friction of the load, serve for the purpose of imparting, together with the adjustable tension-collars, to the four hinges when applied to a pair of doors the same appearance at opposite sides of the casing to which they are attached, and give, furthermore, a perfectly symmetrical appearance to both sets of spring-hinges whether viewed from the inside or outside of the room when the doors are in inwardly-open or outwardly-open position, in the same manner as with the spring-hinges described in the prior patent referred to, in which separate ball-bearings are interposed between the spring-barrels and pintle-sockets.
The springs s, 8 which are located in the barrels a, a are coiled respectively in opposite directions, that is to say, one barrel is provided with a spring coiled in the right-hand direction and the other barrel with a spring coiled in the-left-hand direction. In one barrel the adjustable tensioncollar f is located at the upper end and the fixed spring-holder g and loose washer h at the lower end, while in the other springbarrel the fixed spring-holder and the loose washer 7L1 are located at the upper end and the adjustable tension-collar f at the lower end of the barrel, as shown in the figure of the drawing.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A double-acting spring-hinge comprising in its construction two spring-barrels, a web connecting the barrels, flanges on the springbarrels having perforated ears, pintle-sockets applied to said ears, two fixed springholders located at the lower and upper portions of the respective spring-barrels, loose washers interposed between said springholders and the pintlesockets adjacent thereto, two adjustable tension-collars provided with interior spring-holding lugs and located diagonally opposite to each other and being interposed between the upper and lower ends of the respective springbarrels and the pintle-sockets, pintles passing centrally through the spring-barrels, and springs interposed between the lugs of the fixed spring-holders and the lugs of the adjustable tension-collars in said spring-barrels and coiled respectively in opposite direction to each other.
