UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOI-IN AUGUSTE DUBOIS, OF BESANQON, FRANCE.
BUCKLE FOR WAIST-BELTS.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN AUGUSTE DU- Bols, a citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, residing in Besanon, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles for VVaist-Belts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to buckles, and more particularly to buckles such as are used in connection with waist-belts.
The object of this invention is to provide a buckle of this kind in which the clamping tongue is so. arranged with respect to the body or frame of the buckle that it will not be opened or closed except when it is manipulated for this express purpose.
A further object of the invention is to provide a construction in which the teeth of the clamping tongue are protected, so that there will be no danger of injury from coming in contact with said teeth.
The invention also aims to provide a buckle of simple and compact form, lying in substantially a single plane and having no projecting parts.
Vith these ends in view the invention consists in a buckle constructed in the manner to be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, Figures 1, 2 and 3 are views of one form of buckle constructed according to the invention, Figs. 1 and 3 showing the device in elevation in different positions, and Fig. 2 being a transverse section; Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are views corresponding to Figs. l andv 3, showing a buckle of modified form.
Referring to the drawing, and more particularly to Figs. 1 to 3, 10 denotes the body of the buckle, which is formed of two opposing side-plates 11 substantially square in shape, these side-plates being spaced apart to accommodate between them a clamping tongue 12. The side-plates are provided at each side of the buckle with registering vertical slots 13 which serve to receive the ends of the waist-belt, as shown. At the upper part of the buckle there is formed a substantially horizontal curved slot 14 in which the head l5 of the clamping tongue 12 travels, said head being thus accessible from both faces of the buckle, as shown in Fig. 2. The slot 14 also serves to limit the movement of the clamping tongue 12.
The clamping tongue is pivoted between the side-plates at their lower portions by Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led August 22, 1908.
Serial No. 449,880.
means of a pin 16, as shown in Fig. 2, and said tongue carries spurs or teeth 17 arranged to bite into the fabric of the waistbelt when the same is placed through one of the vertical slots 13, as shown in Fig. 1.
As will be manifest, the clamping and releasing of the fabric is produced by pressing the head 15 of the clamping tongue in the proper direction in its guide-slot 14, whereupon the clamping tongue will swing upon its pivot so that its teeth engage or disengage the belt. The manipulation of the clamping tongue may be most readily effected by straddling the top of the buckle with the thumb and first finger so that the head 15 of the clamping tongue is grasped at opposite sides. By the construction described the locking teeth of the clamping tongue are inclosed and protected between the sideplates, and the head of said tongue is also protected to a certain extent, so that when the tongue is once placed in clamping position it will not be accidentally released.
In the form of buckle shown in Figs. 4 to 6 the body 18 of the buckle is formed of a single web, and the pivoted clamping tongue 19 is bipartite and straddles the web 18, as shown in Fig. 5. The tongue is substantially U-shaped in this form of buckle, it being pivoted at its lower ends on a pin 20 and having its head 21 movable in a slot 22 corresponding to the slot 14 in the form first described. In order to prevent inadvertent contact with the clamping teeth 23 the same are caused to travel in suitable grooves 24, 25, formed by ribs stamped in the faces of the web 18. Both bipartitions of the clamping tongue are correspondingly stamped to conform to said rib, as clearly shown in Fig. 5.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
1. In a buckle, the combination of a frame provided with vertical slots for the belt, and with a substantially horizontal slot at the upper portion of the buckle, and a clamping tongue pivoted at the lower portion of the buckle and having a head traveling in the horizontal slot.
2. A buckle for waist-belts, comprising a body or frame having a substantially horizontal slot in its upper portion and a pair of vertical slots to receive the ends of the belt, a clamping tongue pivoted at its lower end and movable between said vertical slots,
