FOLDING AND SLIDING SAFE-CABINET.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC J. WVING, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska, have invented a certain new and useful Folding and Sliding Safe-Cabinet, of which the following is a specification sufl iciently clear to enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Its object is :To produce a safe cabinet adapted to fold together and slide into a safe and to be partially withdrawn therefrom and be conveniently opened so as to render practically double the amount of compartments accessible for use in a safe of a given size, rendering practical the use of a safe of the most economical form of construction and of the greatest value in caring for and protecting such matters as single account files etc., now almost universally kept where they are subject to destruction by even a small fire. This purpose is attained in my invention by certain novel construction and combination of parts and materials which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification and in which drawings similar characters of reference refer to similar parts in the several views.
Figure 1, represents a front view of my cabinet partially withdrawn from a safe and opened up with all its compartments accessible. Fig. 2, represents a vertical front view of my cabinet folded up and slid inside a safe. Fig. 3, represents a side view of a safe with a portion thereof cut away to show my cabinet partially withdrawn and in position opened up ready for access. Fig. 4, represents a side view of a section of my cabinet, bearings,-and track for same with folding end of track and folding support leg. I make my cabinet of any suitable material sheet metal preferred. In making it of sheet metal I reinforce the joints with angle iron and the edges with suitable metal strips. I make my cabinet rectangular in shape in two parts, a the inner part and a the outer part, which two parts I hinge together by the hinges a as shown in Specification of Letters Patent.

Fig. l. I provide a plurality of compartments in each of the said two parts by means of the partitions b and b the shape and form of which compartments may be varied to adapt same to the convenience for use in different kinds of business and professions.
I provide means for latching the two parts of my cabinet together for which purpose I rivet the two studs a to the side of the inner part of the cabinet so as to project therefrom and I swingingly attach the two latches a to the side of the outer section of the cabinet, in a position to engage the studs a when the cabinet is closed. I vertically attach the shouldered clips a to part 0: of the cabinet to serve as guides for the latches and I swingingly connect the latches together by a metal connecting strip a for convenience in latching and unlatching them simultaneously. I provide a swinging handle a with metal loops a which I attach to the back of part a of my cabinet by which handle I slide my cabinet forward in position for opening same.
I provide a carriage device as follows: a ball race cl of suitable metal flattened on top and having downward projecting arms adapted to retaining the balls. I provide holes through the top of the ball Fig. 5, through which I attach the ball race to the bottom of the inner part a of my cabinet by any suitable means, rivets, screws or bolts, in the position shown in Fig. 3. I use ordinary balls, (Z for bearings. I make parallel metal trackways each side thereof having two parts, e and e and provide the parts e thereof with vertical holes through which by screws or other suitable means I attach same to the bottom of the safe in the position shown in Fig. 3. I connect the two parts of each trackway by the hinged joints f which allow the parts c to fold up out of the way when the cabinet has been slid inside the safe as shown in Fig. 2. I make a support c of suitable metal legs, connected by a crossbar and braces, which I attach to the outer ends of the folding trackways c by the hinged joints f so as to allow .the support c to assume the position shown in Figs. 1, 3 and a when in use and to fold up snugly together with the folding trackways inside the safe, as shown in Fig. 2, when not in use, in which position it is out of the way and permits the safe door to be closed and locked.

I make a swinging support 6 which I attach to the lower part of the outer side of part a of my cabinet so as to support same when open as shown in Fig. 1 and to fold up snugly out of the way inside the safe as shown in Fig. 2.
The utility of my cabinet is at once parent. It is adapted to be used in square type of safe thereby effecting greatest economy in the structure of safe itself, it gives practically double amount of cabinet face accessible for use heretofore in such a safe and permits the advantages in safety and economy of a single outer door safe, in short itfills a long felt want.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a folding and sliding safe cabinet in combination, a safe, a cabinet, said cabinet being adapted to slide into and be partly withdrawn from the safe, said cabinet being made of sheet metal or other suitable material reinforced by suitable strips of heavier metal to give proper rigidity and being made rectangular in shape and being provided with means adapting the cabinet to slide freely apthe the the the into and be partly withdrawn from the safe and supported when so withdrawn and part of which said means are adaptable to fold up and snugly pack against the said cabinet inside the safe.
2. In a folding and sliding safe cabinet, in combination, an inner portion of a cabinet said inner portion being provided with a plurality of compartments formed by partitions within the same, an outer portion of a cabinet, said outer portion being provided with a plurality of compartment-s formed by partitions wit-11in same, hinged members which said members connect the two portions of the cabinet and adapt the outer portion thereof to swing horizontally so as to open the compartments to access or to swing the outer compartments shut closing the cabinet, suitable means adapted to latching the two parts of said cabinet shut or unlatching them to open the cabinet.
