UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM J. PETE/I, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, .ASSIGNOR TO THE MILWAUKEE STAMPING CO., INCORPORATED, 0F WEST ALLIS, WISCONSIN.
HINGE FOR TRAVELINGr-BAGS.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM J. PETRI, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Milwaukee, county of Milwaukee, and State of Visconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hinges for Traveling-Bags, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in traveling bags and the like, and it pertains more especially to the construction of the double hinge members by which the two opposing sides of the bag frame are pivotally connected together.
My improvements are explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical section of a bag drawn transversely to the two opposing frame members. Fig. 2 is a top view of the bag in open position. Fig. 3 is an enlarged top view of one of the frame hinges shown in connection with one end of the frames. Fig. 4L is a perspective view of the preferred form of one of the double hinges removed from the frames, and Fig. 5 is a side view, part in section, of a modified form of double hinge.
Like parts are identified by the same reference letters throughout the several views.
rIhe two opposing frame members 1 and 2 f the bag, the bag inclosing cover 3, and the hinge connecting plate 4, are all constructed and arranged in substantially the ordinary manner. So also the two folding hinge members 6, 6, the base or central connecting plate 7 and the two hinge pins 8, by which pin the two folding members 6 are pivotally connected with said central member, are also of ordinary construction, and said folding hinge members 6 are respectively adapted to be connected with the respective sides 1 and 2 of the bag frame at each end of the bag, and with the horizontal connecting bar t in substantially the ordinary manner, while my present improvement pertains more especially to the contact bearings 12, which are formed integrally with or rigidly aiiixed to the central base member 7 and act as stops to the foldable hinge members 6, and when .the bag is closed, serve to bring and hold said foldable hinge members parallel to each other, while they also at the Specification of Letters Patent.

same time bring and hold said central base member 7 in a. horizontal position at right angles to the two foldable members, whereby several very important objects are attained. By thus bringing and retaining the two foldable members and central base member atright angles to each other, the respective side frames of the bag as they are closed, are brought into exact alinement with each other, so that they pass one within the other without chafing, and the locking bolts, loops or clasps of the frame are caused to register perfectly with each other, while the respective sides of the bottom of the bag are supported upon the same plane and the liability of the bag sagging and getting out of the normal rectangular shape, as heretofore, with double hinges of ordinary construction, is entirely avoided.
Vhile, for convenience of construction, the contact bearings 12 are preferably formed integrally with the respective sides of the central member 7, as shown in Fig. Ll, similar contact bearings 14k' may be formed in connection with a separate plate 15, as shown in Fig. 5, when such plate is connected with the central member 7 by a rivet or screw 16, which rivet or screw also serves the two additional purposes of connecting the respective ends of the bar 4land the two hinge shields 17 with said central hinge members 7.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a double hinge for traveling bags and the like, the combination of two opposing frame members, two foldable hinge members, a central connecting member, pivotal pins connecting said foldable hinge members with said central member, and contact bearings connected with and supported from said central member adapted to serve as stops to said foldable members and retain the same, when in contact therewith, at substantially right angles to said central counecting member.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
IVILLIAM J. PETRI.
