UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE...
CHARLES L. PEIRCE, J 3., OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE W. G. NAGEL ELEC- TRIO COMPANY, OF TOLEDO, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
CABLE-HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 23, 1909.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that 1, CHARLES L. PEIRoE, Jr., a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Cable- Hanger; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures ofreference' marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improved means for suspending electrical conductor-cables or the like from their supporting or messengerwires, and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this character, the clip or messenger-engaging memberof which 1s stamped from'sheet-metal and shaped to form a simple, durable and eflicient means to which the suspender member; may be easily and quickly secured without liability of accidental displacement.
A further object of my invention is to provide a hanger which combines a maximum amountof strength with a minimum amount of material, whereby to cheapen its construction without depreciating its practicability or commercial value. 7 The invention is fully described in the fol lowing specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved hanger applied to a conductor cable and its messenger-wire. Figs. 2 and 3 are different elevations of the clip or messen erengaging member of the hanger, and igs. 4 and 5 are plan and side views, respectively, of the clip blank.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the portion of my improved hanger which forms the clip or hook and rides on 01' engages the messenger-Wire 2, and 3 the portion thereof which forms the suspender or loop member for engaging with and supporting the conductor-cable 4.
The clip or hook 1 comprising the features of my present invention is stamped from sheet-metal and formed in inverted U- shape to adapt it to straddle and ride on the messenger-wire 2. The blank 5 from which the clip is formed has its ends slotted for a suitable distance longitudinally thereof, as
shown at 6, to form the spaced companion Q tongues 7 on each end thereof. These tongues are bent outwardly and upwardl to form companion hooks on each termlna of the clip, and are spaced sufliciently apart by the provision of the slot 6 to permit an easy insertion of the cooperating end of the loop member 3 therein, as shown in Fig. 1. The ends of these tongues are drawn closer to the body of the clip than their base portions, so
as to require the application of force to the being pulled through the intervening openings between the hooked tongues 7 when under strain. It is preferable to depress the inner edges of the tongues at their loops or base portions, ,as' shown at 9, to provide a concaved seat for the enlargements 8 of the suspender so as to lessen the danger of their being cut by contact with the sharp edges of the tongues.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
A cable-hanger comprising a messenger straddling member and a pliant suspender,
the messenger straddling member being stamped from a flat sheet and bent upon itself to form an inverted" U-shaped member and having its ends each bifurcated and the forks thus formed bent up contiguous to the depending legs of the member to form cooperating securing means for the ends of the suspender.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
