RECOILING-IBARREL GUN 941,006. speifieation of Iietterslatent- Patented Nov. 23, 1909. Application, filed February 4, 1909. Serial No. 476,119. To all stant effort to swing the same inward into Be it known that I, FRANK F. BURTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Short Beach, in the county of New Haven position for engagement with the cartridge .10 which is indicated by broken lines.
whom it may concern: I
l I the breech-block moves into its closed posiand State of Connecticut, have invented a tion, tl1 hook 4 of the extractor 3 enters a new and useful Improvement .in'Reco'ilingclearance-notch l1 formed partly in the bararrel Guns; and I do hereby declare the f rel-extension l2 and partly in the recoilingfollowing, when taken in connection with ban-e113 containing the cartridge-chamber the accompanying drawings and the figures I ll in uhich the cartrid e 1S located at the of reference marked thereon, to be a full I time of its explosion As the hook 4 moves clear, an exact description of the same and into. the clearance-notch 11 its beveled forwhich said drawings constitute part of this waid edge rides over the head of the carspecification, and represent, in tudge and snaps into engagement with the Figure 1 a broken view in side elevation rim thereof. When the cartrid e is exof a gun constructed in accordance with my ploded the barrel 13, bairel-extension 12 and 7c invention. Fig. 2 a broken view thereof in breech-block 7 recoil to ether with the ex horizontal section showing the breech-block tractor engaged, as described, with the rim as detained at the limit ofits rearward moveof the cartridge. When they reach the limit ment and the recoilingbarrel and barrelof their rearward excursion, the block is extension just approaching the limit of their caught and temporarily detained in the forward movement and a cartridge being usual manner, while the barrel and barrelejected through the side ejection-opening of extension are returned to their normal posithe gun-frame. tions by the bariel-leturning spring which My invention relates to an improvement is-of ordinary construction and not shown. in recoiling-barrel guns, the object being to During this-forward movement of the barrel provide simple and reliable means for inand barrel-extension, the barrel, as it were, suring the proper performance of their exis stripped from the spent shell which is tractors notwithstanding variations in the gripped and held 'by the extractor. Now shape and size of the heads of the spent just before the barrel and barrel-extension cartridges, and notwithstanding possible de leach the limit of their forward movement, fects in the heads and improper presentathe head of the cartridge is struck a sharp tion of the heads to the extractors. low from the iear by the CEIItIld Q-GJQCtOI \Viththese ends in view my invention con- 15 which is mounted in the rear end of the sists in means for insuring the positive holdbarrel-extension 12 at a point directly oppoing of the extractor in its extracting pogition site the extractor 3 as shown in Fig. 2. 'llhe at the time of the performance of its exi cartridge being at this time engaged with tracting function. the extractor, will be partly revolved upon My invention further consists in a cam for the hook at as upon a center and violently positively holding the extractor in its exejected through a side ejection-openin 16 tracting position at the time of the performed in the ri ht hand wall of the un- 9 formance of its extracting function. lame o1 ieceiver 17. Now as the barrel My invention further consists in certain arrel-extension and breech-block recoil todetails of construction and combinations of gether, the extractor will not be disturbed in, parts as will be hereinafter described and its relation to the cartrid e durin this pointed out in the claim. movement. But ust before they reach the 0( In carrying out my invention as herein limit of their reaiward exc urs1on, the cam 2 shown, I form a cam 2 upon the outer edge of the extractor engages with the inner face of the extractor 3 which is formed with a of the right hand wall of the gun-frame or hook 4 and hung upon a vertically arranged receiver at about the point 18, whereby the pin 5 on which the extractor swings in a extractor is positively held in posit1on for horizontal plane in a recess 6 in the breech the performance of its extracting function; block 7 which may be of any approved eonin other words after the cam 2 has been en struction. A small spiral spring 8 located gaged with the inner face of the Il llt hand in a recess 9 in the breech-block engages with side wall of the gun-frame no strain mthe heel of the extractor and exerts a conposed upon the extractor can cause 1t to swing outward away from its proper extract-mg position. On. the other hand in case the extractor is not in proper position at the time of its engagement with the'said wall or not properly hooked onto or enga ed with the spent shell, then the extractor will by the said cam 2 be forced inward into its pro er position in which it will be positive y held by the said cam.
My improvement takes care of all in- 4 equalities in the shape and size of the heads of the cartridges as well as all. failures of the shell to be fully and properly engaged by the hook .of the extractor when the same first engages with the spent shell. Obviously any strain imposed upon the spent cartridge while the gun-barrel is being stripped from it as described, will not cause the extractor to let go its hold upon the cartridge as the cam-surface of the extractor holds the same up to its work and will not allow it to swing outward and let go its hold.
I claim a recoiling-barrel shot-gun, the combination with a frame or receiver having a 'SldB e ect1onopen1ng, of a recoding-barrel,-
a breech-block formed at the forward end of its side adjacent to the said opening with a recess, a single pivotal extractor horizontally arranged in the said recess and yielding to engage a rim-cartridge and formed upon its outer edge with an irregular surface acting as a cam for positively swinging the extractor inward upontherim ojfthe' agement' of shell to be extracted by the en ace of that such surface with the inner portion of the side wall of the receiver just.
