TONGUE-SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented NOV. 23, 1909.
Application led January 9, 1909. Serial No. 471,427.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. D. EVANS, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVhittier, county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tongue-Supports, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a means for supporting the tongue or draft pole of implements such as a wheel scraper or wheel plow or other like implement, and the object thereof is to reduce the strain upon the necks of the animals to the minimum and also to provide for a laterally yielding motion between the draft 'animals and the implement being operated. I accomplish these objects by the device described herein and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the same employed in the operation of a wheel scraper in which:
Figurel is a side elevation of my improved device secured to a wheel scraper. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of my improved device, the view being taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1 and showing the same passing over uneven ground. F ig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig.v 1. F ig. 4 is a det-ail of the connection between the parts of the pole truck in a plane at right angles to that of Fie. 3.
In the drawing a two wheeled truck 5 carries a base plate G secured upon the axle 7 of the truck. `The central top portion of the base plate carries an upwardly projecting rib y8 whose upper surface is curved. This rib runs at right angles to the axle. The base plate is made in two parts and secured together by bolts 9. Resting upon the base plate is a U-shaped draft frame l0 having a base plate 11 in the bottom of which is a circular groove 12 which lits upon the rib of the base plate of the truck. In the vertical member of the draft frame are a number of holes 13 in which are received the pin of clevis 14. Clevis 14 receives clevis 15 in which last clevis is received the double tree 16, by means of which the draft animals are secured to the pole support. To the top member 16a of the draft frame is secured the guiding tongue 17 being pivotally connected to its base member 17a at 18 to swing vertically. A T-shaped bolt 19 passes upwardly through the upper part of the truck base plate through a slot 20 until the head 21 rests in a groove 22 in the lower side of the top portion of the truck base plate. This bolt passes upwardly through the U-shaped draft frame and through the base 17a of the guiding tongue and also through the front end of the tongue 23 of the scraper 24. The scraper tongue is provided with an upper brace 25 and a lower brace 26 which are likewise received upon bolt 19. Upon bolt 19 above and below the scraper tongue are threaded elongated washers or spools 27. A nut 28 upon the top of bolt 19 secures the draft frame to the truck.
In the operation of my device should the wheels of the scraper strike an obstruction, the jar occasioned thereby would be taken off the draft animals by the pole support. Should one of the wheels of the truck run upon a ridge the draft frame will turn upon the rib of the truck frame so as to retain its vertical position while the truck assumes the position shown in F ig. 2. After the obst-ruction is passed over it will adjust itself to the position shown in Fig. 3.
Any other implement can be secured to the pole support as well as the scraper shown in the drawings.
By having a plurality of attaching holes in the draft frame, the draft animals can be secured thereto to pull the load from the best point. By having the tongue vertically jointed near the draft frame the jar upon the necks of the draft animals when an obstruction is encountered lby the implementbeing operated is avoided as the joint allows of a vertical movement of the tongue and the truck prevents any lateral movement of the tongue.
Having described my invention what I claim is:
1. A pole support comprising an axle; wheels supporting the axle; a U-shaped draft frame pivot-ally connected to said axle and having the upper or free end thereof adapted to oscillate in the direct-ion of the lengt-h of the axle; a pole connected to the top of said draft frame, said pole being pivotally connected to swing vertically near its connection to said frame; an implement tongue connected to said draft frame between the U arms and adapted to move horizontally; and means vertically adjustable secured to the draft frame opposite the implement tongue, whereby the draft animals may be hitched to the same.
2. A pole support comprising an axle; a
base plate secured upon the top of said axle;
cured upon the top of said draft frame, said said base plate having an upwardly projectl Jtongue being pivotally connected to swing ing rib With an upper curved surface running at right angles to the length of the axle and having a longitudinal channel in said base plate and a transverse slot in the upper portion thereof; Wheels supporting said axle; a U-shaped draft frame having a base plate with a groove in the bottom thereof adapted to ft upon the base plate on the axle; a bolt connecting said base plate and draft frame; a guiding tongue therein severtically; and an implement tongue having braces pivotally secured to said draft frame.
In Witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 4th day of January, 1909.
WILLIAM C. D. EVANS. Witnesses:
