TEMPORARY SLEIGH-RUNNER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. May 12, 1908.
Patented Dec. 1, 1908.
Serial No. 432,345.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JUDD B. CRANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ellensburg, county of Kittitas, and State of Tashington, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Temporary Sleigh-Runners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in temporary sleigh runners for vehicles, and has for its object to provide an exceeding simple and effective device of this character by means of which the sleigh runner may be readily and securely attached to a wagon after the wheels have been removed therefrom.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a runner which will readily pass over obstacles with very little jar.
With these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by letter to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wagon having my improved sleigh runner secured thereto. Fig. 2 is a plan view of my improved sleigh runner the axle to which it is attached being broken away. Fig. 3 is a section at the line XX of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 4 is a rear end view thereof.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied, A represents a runner the front end of which is curved upward as indicated at A.
B indicates a brace secured to the runner and having a slot C out therein to allow the runner free movement when meeting with any obstacles. On the upper surface of the runner is secured the lugs D and between these lugs is fastened a holding bar E said holding bar passing upward through the slot C and is then fastened to the axle F of the vehicle by means of the clips G and G. On the inside lug B is secured with one end of the brace rod H, the opposite end being secured to the axle F by the clip G.
In practice when it is desired to convert the wagon into a sleigh the wheels would be removed from their axles and my improved sleigh runner secured thereto by means of the clips and it will be seen from the description when my improved runner comes in contact with the obstacle the fore part of the runner will be moved u ward and it will stay in that position unti the obstacle is directly beneath the lugs D then the fore part of the runner will move downward until it again comes in contact with the earth and rear end will then move upward and will remain in that position until it is completely passed beyond the obstacle. These movements of the runner are of course limited by the length of the slot C out in the brace B.
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details here shown as these may be varied within certain limits without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and useful is- 1. In a temporary sleigh runner for vehicles, a runner, the front end of which is curved upward, a brace having a slot cut therein secured to said runner, lugs secured to the upper surface of the runner, a holding rod, one end of which is movably secured between the lugs the opposite end being attached to the axle of the vehicle, a brace, one end of which is movably secured to the inner lug, and clips for securing said holding bar and brace of the axle to the vehicle as shown and described.
2. In combination a runner a brace having an opening cut therein secured to said runner, lugs attached to the upper surface of said runner a holding bar attached to said lugs passing through the opening cut in the brace, a brace one end of which is secured to the inner lug and means for securing the ends of said holding bar to the brace of the axle of the vehicle.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses JUDD B. CRANE.
