Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. BLIss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aurora Springs, in the county of Miller and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Buggy-Tops; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to attachments for buggy tops.
One object of the invention is to provide an attachment adapted to yieldingly connect the main props of the top with the rear axle of the buggy, whereby the jarring or sudden jerking usually received by the top of the buggy when the wheels run into a rut or over an obstruction, will be substantially eliminated.
Another object is to provide a device of this character by means of which the top of the buggy when lowered will be prevented from forcibly dropping, which frequently results in the breaking of the bows or other part of the top.
IVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of a buggy showing the application of the invention thereto and showing the buggy top in raised position; Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the buggy top in lowered position; Fig. 3 is a detail side view of one of the main braces of the buggy top showing the attachment connected thereto.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the main prop or brace of the buggy top 2, said prop consisting of an upper section 3 connected to the upper portion of the buggy top in the usual manner and a lower section I which is connected at its lower end to the top supportin bolt 5 in the usual manner. The sections 0% the prop are connected together by the ordinary form of rule joint, whereby the prop may be broken when the top is lowered. On the lower pivoted end of the prop is formed a downwardly projecting extension 6, on the lower end of which is formed a hook 7. To the hook 7 on the extended end of the prop is connected one end of a coiled spring 8, the opposite end of which is connected to a hook 9 formed on the clamping plate 10 of a clip 11 secured to the rear axle 12 of the vehicle. It will be understood that the main props on both sides of the top are provided with extensions 6 and have connected thereto the springs 8. By providing the springs 8 and connecting the same to the top prop and rear axle, as herein shown and described, the top of the buggy or vehicle will be yieldingly braced and held against violent jarring or jerking motion when the wheels of the vehicle run into ruts or over obstructions, thus preventing the racking of the top. The springs when arranged in the manner described, also prevent the rebounding of the vehicle body and the consequent bouncing or tossing of the occupants thereof, as well as obviating the danger of breaking the vehicle springs which frequently occurs from the excessive rebounding movement of the body. The attachment also serves the purpose of holding the vehicle body in a level position. By extending the end of the main props of the top below the lower pivotal connection of the latter and connecting the springs to the extensions, as shown, the pressure of the springs is utilized to assist in gradually lowering the top, thus preventing the same'from forcibly dropping onto the supporting bolts and thus injuring the top. The springs will also serve to yieldingly hold the top when in lowered position and prevent the same from shaking and jarring when the vehicle passes over rough roads.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In an attachment for buggy tops, a top prop having its lower section extended longitudinally beyond its pivotal point, a spring connect-ed at one end to said extension, a clip adapted to be secured to the rear axle, and means to connect the lower end of said spring with said clip.
2. In an attachment or buggy tops, a main top prop having a rigid member on the lower end of its lower section extending longitudinally in the same plane beyond the pivotal point thereof, and provided on its free end with a hook, a clip for connection to 10 an axle having a hook extending upwardly my hand in presence of two subscribing wit- 15 nesses.
