To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARGARET CUMMs, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, am the eXecutriX of the estate of FRANK F. CUMMs, late a citizen of said city, and that the said FRANK F. CUMMs did invent a certain new anduseful Improvement in Leather-Edging Tools,

and I do declare the following'to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in leather edging tools. V

The object of-the inventionis to provide a tool of this character by means of which the edges of leather straps may be smoothly and evenly trimmed.

A further object of the invention is to provide an edge trimmer for leather straps and the like having means whereby the same may be quickly and easily adjusted for use on straps of different thicknesses.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a plan view of the tool showing in dotted lines the manner of adjusting the gaging lever; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.

Referring more particularly to the drawings 1 denotes the edger which consists of a blade, 2, on one end of which is formed a shank, 3, by means of which the blade is enaged with a suitable handle, 4.

The upper side of the blade 2 is cut away to form a centrally disposed cutting edge, 5, on the outer end of the blade 2. The portions of the blade adjacent to its opposite edges form guide flanges, 6, said flanged edges being formed by the recessed or cutaway portion of the blade and they serve as guides for the work upon which the tool is used. The flange, 6, on one side of the blade projects a short distance beyond the cutting edge as shown at 7, and forms a guide lug by means of which the end of the blade may be more readily engaged with the edge of the leather to be trimmed.

Pivotally mounted on the upper side of the blade adjacent to one edge of the same is a gaging lever, 8, the forward end of which is turned downwardly at right-angles over the outer end of the blade and forms a guide lug, 9. The lever, 8, is pivotally connected to the blade by a pivot screw, 10, on which is arranged a thumb nut, 12. On the inner end of the lever, 8, is formed a rightangular extension, 13, in which and in the end of the lever is formed a transversely disposed slot, 14, to receive a set screw, 15,

which is adapted to be screwed into a threaded aperture in the blade whereby the lever is held in its adjusted position. The "rear portion of, the leverbetween the pivot screw, 10, and the set screw 15 is reduced in thickness so that said rear portion of the lever forms a spring whereby when the thumb nut 12 is screwed outwardly on the pivot bolt, the forward end of the lever will spring upwardly out of engagement with the end of the blade, thereby facilitating the pivotal movement of the lever to adjust the downwardly turned end, 9, thereby increasing or decreasing the working space of the blade between said end 9 and the projecting end, 7 of the flange, 6. When thus adjustin the lever, the set screw, 15, is loosened sui iiciently to permit the slotted inner end of the lever to move freely in one direction or the other across the blade. After the lever has thus been adjusted to provide the desired width of working space for the cutting edge of the blade, the thumb nut is screwed inwardly on the pivot bolt, thereby clamping the lever firmly into engagement with the upper side of the blade, after which the set screw is again tightened and securely holds the lever in position.

By means of a tool of this character, the edges of straps or similar objects may be smoothly and evenly trimmed in a safe and efiicient manner.

A tool as herein shown and described is simple, strong and durable in construction and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to bessecured by Letters-Patent, is:

1. In an edge trimmer of the character de scribed, a blade having on its outer end'a cutting edge, guide flanges formed on the opposite edges of the blade, a guide lug projecting beyond the end of the: blade at one side of said cutting edge,.and an adjustable gaging lever to co act with said flange and guide lug.
