l. To all'whom fitmaypconcem:
,. Be it known that I, HENRY L.. BAI'iToN, a
citizen ofthe United States, and .a resident of. Pittsburg, in lthe county of Allegheny and Statelof Pennsylvania, have made a new and useful Invent-ion in Blade-Holding VMeans, of which the following is a specification.'`
'various means have been utilized for securing the blades and vanes to their respective holding elements. In one methodwhich has been employed-to a large extent the holding elements, such as the turbine stator and rotfor,. are .circumferentially grooved; the.
grooves are undercut; the blades or vanes are secured to a base strip; the base strip .1nserted within the groove, and a calking strip, inserted between one wall of thegroove andthe base strip, is expanded transversely of the groove. This method is more or less satisfactory, but,'owing to the fact that blading strips occur and that it becomes necessary to -reblade machines in the field,
, it has been found that the reblading of turbines in which the blades are mounted as in the 'method described is not onlydiiicult but unsatisfactory.
An object of this invention has been to produce improved means for securing blade and vane sections (a section consists of a number of blades or vanes secured orattached to a base strip or section) to their respective holding elements.
. In the drawings accompanying and formA ing a part of this' application; Figure 1 1s a developed section of a portion of a turbine blade orvane holding element provided with a circumferentially extending undercut groove or slot in which is located a blade section secured to the holding element in accordance with this invention; Fig. 2 is an end elevation taken on the line A-A of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an end elevation talren on the line B-B of Fig. 1; Fig. 11 is avlew 1n perspective of two complementary wedges en-` tering into this invention; Fig. 5 1s a view in perspective of a modified form of'wedge V'entering into thisinvention;- and Fig. `6 is an end elevation of a' blade or vane holding .,element, a blade section and complementary wed es formed in accordance -fication illustrated vin Figf.
I 'n carr ing the invention into practice a*A emmelturbine' b ade or vane holding elementT-"is cireumferentially grooved and the groove is i undercut on both sides, as'shownat 8 and in Figs. 2 and 3; or as-shown in Figyf,
undercut on'but oneSide. A blade section consisting of a base ring ory strip 1Q cnt into the desired lengths and provided wit-hblades' or, vanes 11 secured thereto' lin any suitable manner is inserted' in one of' the-grooves. The grooves are of-.such widththat a slot is provided between wall 9, of thegro'ovefand side 120ithe basering, and atone or more. points along the groove the saine is widened as, shown-at 13, Fig. 1. 'As sh'wnin Figs. 1,2 and 3, double-or 'compound tapered complementary' wedges 14 are singly inserted in' the notched portions of -the groove 13, slid around-within they slot and driven home lso as to securely bind and'lock. l
the blade sections within the grooves.
The y.
pairs-of wedges! nmy abut one against anvf,
other, leaving the widened. space 13 open,
into which a malleableV metal iiller may be calked, thus locking all' of the wedges together, or spaces may be left between theV several pairs of wedges and the metalof the holding element peened over so kas to engage with slots 15 formed in the top ksides of the l i wedges. g
W'hen Yit is desired to remove the blade sections for any reason, or the base rings after the bladeshave been stripped therefrom by accident, the wedgesv may be loosened by engaging a suitabletool with the wedges in the slots 15. Vhen the wedges are thus loosened theyv may be moved around base ring will be provided with a Lbead A18'.4 Y
as shown in Fig. 6 and one wall of the vgroove in the holding element will be formed with a groove to'receive the "bead 1 6.
It will be understood that, since this in.
out departing from the spirit of this inven.
.ventioiiv is generic many modifications may be madeffrom the construction shown 'With- Havingthus described my invention, what Iclaim asnew and useful and desiret'o ,secure by LettersPatent is:
