To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NORMAN MCCARTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce a pump mechanism by means of which measured quantities of liquid (of variable amount) may be successively discharged therefrom, provision being made for controlling the measuring mechanism by means of a speed controlled governor.
The apparatus is especially designed for use in conjunction with an internal combustion engine of the non-explosive type,where in it is desirable'to deliver accurately measured, but varying, successive quantities of rfuel to the combustion chamber of the engine.
The accompanying drawing, which is an elevation 1n partial section, illustrates an embodiment of my invention.
In the drawings, 10 indicates a suitable main body in which is formed a pump chambei' 11. Leading into said pump'chamber is an inlet passage 12 controlled by an inwardly opening valve 13 the stem of which is projected through a suitable packing gland 14 and provided with a head 15 beneath which is arranged a light spring 16 which serves to normally close the Valve. Leading from chamber 11 is a discharge pipe 17 in which is preferably mounted an outwardly opening check valve 18. Projected into chamber 11 through a suitable packing gland 21 is a displacing plunger 22. In order to operate the plunger 22 I provide a lever 25 the fulcrum 26 of which is movably mounted in a guideway 27 formed in bracket 28. Fulcrum 26 is also projected into a slot 31 formed in lever 25 so that, by moving the fulcrum, the two arms .of the lever 25 may be simulta neously varied. Fulcrum 26 may be shifted by any desired means, and in the form shown in the drawings said fulcrum is connected by a link 32 with a bell-crank lever 33 which, in turn is connected to a speed controlled governor 34. Lever 25 is' connected to a driving arm 41 which is previded with an adjustable pin 35 adapted to engage head 15, the saidpin thus having a Specification' of Letters Patent.

rlhe operation is as follows.: "With Athe parts in the positions shown in the drawing, plunger 22 has had half of its inward stroke and pin 35 has just left head 1-5, so that valve 13 has just seated. ."he further downward movement of plunger 22 will serve to eject liquid from chamber 11 into pipe 17. On the outward stroke of plunger 22, liquid willl be drawn into chamber 11 past valve 13, by the suction of said plunger the spring 16 being light and yielding to such suction, and, during this outward stroke of plunger 22, pin will be brought down into engagement with head 15 so as to positively open valve 13. On the return or inward stroke of plunger 22 the valve 13 will be held open by pin 35 until plunger 22 had made half of its inner stroke so that, before there is any 'discharge from the pump chamber into pipe 17, there will be a back flow of a portion of the liquid through or past the inlet valve 13.
In the particular structure shown, fulcrum 26 is at its farthest possible point to the left and the pump in this position is giving its maximum discharge. vBy elongating the slot 31 to the left and shifting fulcruin 26 still farther to the left, the time during which valve 13 would be held open by pinV would be still further decreased relative to the stroke of piston 22, and the discharge of the apparatus intopipe 17 would be cor? respoiidingly increased. By shifting fulcrnni 26 to the right, the arm of lever 25 which is connected to plunger 22 is shorteiied, while the opposite arm of said lever is lengthened, and the vconsequence will be that the total stroke of plunger 22 will be decreased.

l. in a pump eoni'arising a main chamber having an inlet andfan outlet, a valve arranged in said `inlet, an ejeeting plunger associated with the pump chamber, means for varying the ejeoting stroke of the plungerl between maximum and a minimum greater than zero, and means for holding the'inlet valve open during a portion of the ejecting strol-:e of the plunr 'er substantially equal to or less than the di l'erenee between its minimum ejeeting stroke and zero.
2. In a pump Comprising a main chamber having` an inlet and an outlet, a valve arranged in said inlet, means for normally holding said valve closed, a plunger projectable into the pump chamber, means tor` varying the stroke of said plunger, and
' means for holding the valve open during a portion of the ejeoting stroke of the plunger.'
,3. In a pump Comprising a main chamber having an inlet and an outlet, a valve arranged in said inlet, a plunger projectable into the pump chamber, a lever connected the plunger, and means for engaging the inl let valvev and holding same open during aportion -of the ejecting stroke of the plunger. 5. In a pump comprising a main chamber having an inlet and an outlet, a valve arranged in said inlet, a plunger projeetable into the pump chamber, a lever connected with said plunger, a fulerum for said lever movable relative thereto to vary its effect upon the plunger, means for shifting said fulcrum relative to the lever, and means for holding the said inlet valve open during a portion of the ejecting stroke of the plunger.
(i. ln a pump comprising a main chamber having an inlet`4 and an outlet, a Valve arranged in said inlet, a plunger projectable into the pump VChamber, a lever connected with said plunger, a -fulcrum for said lever movable relative thereto to vary its effect upon the plunger, means for shifting said fulerum relative to the lever, means for normally closing the inlet valve, and means for holding the said inlet valve open during a portion of the ejecting stroke of the plunger.
