JoHNBancLAY, or ATTLEBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS.
Leners Parma No. 94,064, ma August 24,1869.
ODw- C IMPROVEMENT IN' THE MANUFACTURE .OIE PLATED-METAL BRACELETS.
The Schedule referred to nthese Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all persons to whom these presents may come:
- bracelet, made in accordance with my invention.
Figure 4 is a similar section on an enlarged scale. Figure 5 is a section, on an. enlarged scale, of a plated-metal hollow bracelet,.as heretofore commonly made.
The bracelet, as ordinamy made of' plated' metal, that is, a metal plated with gold or other metal, is formed of' two pieces, A B, (see iig. 5,) soldered together at their junctions, a a.
In the said figure, b b denote the plating-metal, and c c the foundation-metal or plates on which the plating-metal is fixed.
The upper portion, A, before being applied and fixed to the lower portion B, 'is bentiu theform shown in section in the said iig. 5.
vThe soldering or" the two having taken place, the edges of the plate B have to be filed down even with the outer sides lof the part A. This leaves the edges of the baser metal plate c exposed, without any covering or plating of gold.
Ina bracelet made on iny improved plan, these Yedges are not exposed, but are entirely covered.
In the productie@ of my invention, I bend or turn up the lower plate, shown at O, in iig. 4, at each of Y its opposite edges, in manner as represented in such figure, each edge ofthe plate, after such bending, may have been eiiected, resting upon or being directly over the upper or unplatcl surface of' the plate, the whole being so as to form beads, E E, on the Hanks of the plate, and with the plating 11 on the external surface of the plate and such beads.
The fellow-piece D, bent as shown in section in lig.
4, and having Vthe plating p' onits -outen surface, is
next to be placed on the piece C, and between the beads E E, and soldered to the said piece C. i
The edges of the plating of both plates, C l), will rest directly on, or be immediately over the plate (l, 1 and the edges of the basel' metal ,will be completely` n covered and unexposed.
The-bracelet, when so made, will have the appearance as exhibited in gs. 1, 2, and 3.
rlhe beads E E will render the inner plate C, employed -in making the bracelet, much stiffer and stronger than it would be without them, and, in fact, will cause the bracelet not only .to be stronger, but to present a more ornamental appearance.
They Willalso completely hide the solder'i'rom View, and cause it to take to better advantage than'it otherwise would, or, in other words, they willv cause it to effect a much, firmer union of'the two plates.
I therefore claim the improved manufacture or plated-metal bracelet, as made with the turned parts or beads E E, arranged, with respect to the plates C D and their platings p p', in manner substantially as represented and described.
