PAPER-ROLL HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 16, 1909.
Application filed June 5, 1909. Serial No. 500,297.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY Rosnennr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Taro, in the county of Charlotte and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in PZIPT-ROll Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
The present invention relates to roll paper holders and cutters, and has for its object the production of a simple device for holding paper in rolls with a suitable appliance for tearing off such portions, as may be needed from time to time and also for allowing the whole device to be rotated to any po sition desired.
Great difficulty has been often experienced in placing the paper roll within the holder and the present invention also provides for novel means for facilitating the placing of the roll of paper upon the holder.
With these and other objects in View this invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device looking from the rear side of the same. F 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view. Fig. 4 is section taken on line i-t of Fig. 2. Fig. is a detail perspective of one of the guide brackets. F ig. 6 is a section taken on line 66 of F 1g. 4. Fig. 7 1s a section taken on line 7 7 of Fig. 4.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates the supporting base. which is provided upon the top thereof with a journal 2, said journal being provided with flanged or outwardly-extending, tapering top 3. The roll supporting frame is adapted to be supported by the supporting base 1, and co1nprises a base portion 4:, which is provided with an aperture 5. A groove 6 is formed upon the inside of the aperture 5 and extends around the entire inner surface thereof, and is formed so as to receive the upper flanged edge 3, of the journal 2. It will be seen that by having such a journal that the whole frame can be readily swung or turned upon the journal 2, so as to have the roller in any position desired for cutting or tearing the paper from the roller.
A pair of upwardly-extending diverging arms 7 are secured to the base portion t by means of pins or any suitable fastening means 8. The base portion 4 comprises a primary section 9 and an auxiliary section 10. These sections are firmly held together by means of the pins or fastening means 8 for securing the diverging arms 7 upon the base portion 4. By having such a structure it will be obvious that the base portion 4: can be easily placed upon the journal 2. The roll supporting frame further consists of a pair of side members 11, which members are provided with slots or notches 12 adapted to receive the ends 13 of the paper roller 14. To the top of the side members 11 is secured a top portion 15 by means of pins 16.
The side members 11 are provided upon one side thereof with a longitudinally-extending notch 17 in which is pivotally mounted a supporting brace 18 adapted to engage the end surface of the guide bracket 19, which bracket is pivotally secured to one side of the side member 11. The bracket 19 is substantially L-shaped in cross section, and has its upper flanged portion 20 overhanging the edge of the side portions 11. The inner end of the flanged portion 20 is slightly curved upon the upper surface thereof, as at 21, for allowing the guide bracket to be more easily swung or folded against the edge of the side members 11. Upon the under surface of the flange 20 is also formed a notch portion 22, which is adapted to be engaged by the outer end of the pivoted brace member 18 for supporting the same in an operative position. The end of the guide bracket 19, which engages the side of the side members 11 is provided with a substantially L-shaped slot 23. A pin 24 is adapted to work in said L-shaped slot and when the guide bracket is in an operative position, the pin 24 is adapted to be in the upper portion 25 of the L-shaped slot 23, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. However, when it is desired to fold the same against one edge of the side members 11, the brace member 18 is thrown downwardly, so as to have the same lie snugly within the slot 17 and the guide bracket is then folded down against the edge of the side member 11, so as to cover the slot and brace member 18 and the pin 24 will then be in the lower portion 26 of the L-shaped slot.
From the foregoing description, it will be readily seen that when the guide brackets 19 are in an operative position, or the position shown in Fig. 1 that a roll of paper can be readily placed thereon, and easily positioned within the notches 1 upon the inner face of the side members 11. The inner face of the side members 11 are also provided with a longitudinally-extending slot 27, in which is adapted to work the vertical roller 28, which roller is provided with a tapering end 29 terminatii'ig into a reduced portion 30, which is adapted to engage a recess in the lower end 27 for firmly holding said roller against displacement. For the same purpose the upper end of the roller 27 is positioned within a socket 231 formed upon the inner surface of the top portion it will be noted that by having the side rollers 28 positioned upon. the inner surface of the side members 11 the same will facilitate the withdrawing of the paper from the roller and prevent the edges of the paper from binding against -he sides of the side members 11 and tearing or injuring the edges of the paper.
To the under surface of the top portion 15 is secured a spring cutting knife 32, which carries at its lower end a cutting edge 33 adapted to engage the roll of paper so as to allow the paper to be out along the edge thereof.
It should be understood that when I refer to the paper roll in the appended claims, this is not intended to limit the claims to a mere roll of paper, but to involve the paper roll support.
W hat I claim is:
