BAB BENDER. APPLICATION FILED nu. 18, 1909..

n n 112? In TERRE T. RICHARDS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BAR-BENDER.
Specicaton ot' Letters Patent.
Patented NOV.1 16, 1909.
Application filed March 18, 1909. Serial No. 484,076.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, .TERRE T. RICHARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bar-Benders, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an improved type of bar bender which is especially adapted for use in connection with reinforced concrete construction work; the essential objects being, to provide a comparatively simple and eiiicient means for clamping the bar; means for bending the same to the required angle; and to adjusting means for regulating the swing of the bar bender to obtain the same degree of bend on a plurality oi' bars.
@ther objects will appear from a detailed description of the invention, which consists inthe features of construction and combination ot parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top or plan view of the bar bending device of the present invention; F ig. 2 a transverse sectional elevation, taken on line 2 2 of F ig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow; Fig. 3 a transverse section, taken on line of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow; and Fig. et a transverse section, taken on line 4l-4t of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow.
The device, as illustrated, comprises a base plate 5 having straight side walls or edges 6, rear wall 7, and a rounded or curved front wall or edge 8. Rivet or bolt holes 9 are suitably formed therein, as indicated in Fig. 1, in order that the same may be locked securely to any suitable bed plate. A lixed clamping member 10 is located on the base plate 5 by means ot bolts or rivets, and, as shown, the forward edge 11 of this clamping member is beveled to form a corner or point 12 around which the bar is bent. Oppositely disposed from this lined clamping member is a movable clamping member 18, which travels back and forth upon the face of the base plate 5 and is guided in its movements by liXed guide rods 14. The movement of this member is regulated by means of a threaded stem 15, which has its forward end in engagement with a socket 16 iiXed on the movable clamping member. The threaded stem has its bearing in a block 17 located on the base plate 5, and is rotated by means of a handle 18 secured at its outer end. Thus it will be seen that rods of varying diameters may be quickly and easily adjusted to position for bending. A disk 19 is mounted in an opening 20 located at the forward end of the base plate 5, said opening being of smaller diameter at its lower portion and forming a ledge 21 against which the disk 19 secures its bearing. A plate 22 is fastened to the under face ot the disk to prevent displacement during the swinging operation. Formed integrally with the disk 19 is a bar bender 23, the forward end of which is enlarged to form a toe 24; and vertically extending from the toe is a handle 25, which is grasped by the operator in the bending operation. The forward edge of the bed plate 5 has located on its under side a semi-circular groove 26, in which travels an adjustable stop 27, which is adapted to be held in any desirable position by a lock nut 28 or any other means.
In use, the bar to be bent is placed upon the bed plate 5 in contact with the fixed clamping member 10. The adjustable clamping member is then brought into engagement with the bar, securing it fixedly in position. The operator brings the toe of the bar bender into engagement with the bar and swings it until the desired degree of angle of bend is reached. Then, it desired, the adjustable stop is brought into contact with the bar bender and secured, after which a plurality of bars may all be bent to the same angle by swinging the bar bender until it contacts the stop.
That I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a bar bender, the combination of a bed plate, a clamping section fixed to the bed plate, a movable clamping section adjustably mounted on the bed plate, a disk revolubly mounted within the bed plate, a bar bender formed integrally with the revoluble disk, and means for regulating the travel ot the bar bender, substantially as described.
2. In a bar bender, the combination of a bed plate, a clamping section iiXed to the bed plate, having its forward end beveled to form a bending point, a movable clamping section adjustably mounted on the bed plate, a disk revolubly mounted within the bed plate, a bar bender formed integrally with the revoluble disk, and means for regulating the travel of the bar bender', substantially as described.
3. In a bar bender, the combination of a bed plate, a clamping section fixed to the bed plate, having its forward end beveled to form a bending point, a movable clamping section adjustably mounted on the bed plate, guide rods for the movable clamping section secured to the bed plate, a threaded stem for regulating the movement of said clamping section, a disk revolubly mounted within the bed plate, a bar bender formed integrally with the revolnble disk, and means for regulating the travel of the bar bender, substantially as described.

In a bar bender, the combination of a bed plate, a clamping section fixed to the bed plate, having its forward end beveled to form a bending point, a movable clamping section adjustably mounted on the bed plate, guide rods for the movable clamping section secured to the bed plate, a threaded stem i for regulating` the movement of said clamping section, a disk revolubly mounted within the bed plate, a bar bender formed integrally with the revoluble disk, and having its forward end enlarged to form a toe, and means for regulating` the travel of the bar bender, substantially as described.
o. In a bar bender, the combination of a bed plate, a clamping sect-ion fixed to the bed plate, having its forward end beveled to form a bending point, a movable clamping section adjustably mounted on the bed plate, guide rods for the movable clamping section secured to the bed plate, a threaded stem for regulating the movementof said clamping section, a disk revolubly mounted within the bed plate, and having for its bearing seat a ledge formed in the body of the bed plate, a bar bender formed integrally with the revoluble disk, and having its forward end enlarged to form a toe, and a body portion extending back therefrom and forming a handle, and means for regulating the travel of the bar bender, substantially as described.
