MOP.
To all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that we, GUsrAv B. `W1orr MANN and Davis RICH, citizens of the United States of America, residing at the city otl St. Louis, in the State ot Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mops, ot which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
Our invention relates to mops for scrubbing floors and it has tor its object the production of a mop ot this description provided with a clamp head whereby the swab ot the mop may be detachably held to the mop handle and rendered rounding in shape to correspond to the most prevalent type ot mops and in which the swabs are tied to the mop handle.
By our improvement new swabs may be substituted for the original swabs from time to time with readiness and ease and by a simple operation.
Figure I is an elevation ot our improved mop. Fig. II is an enlarged elevation of the mop head. Fig. III is a longitudinal section through the mop head. Fig. IV is an end view of the mop head. Fig. V is a cross section taken on the line VV ot Fig. III. Fig. VI is a perspective view ot the draw nut operable on the terrule of the mop head.
In the accompanying drawings :-A. designates the handle ot our mop and B the swab which preferably consists ot cords such as are commonly used in round mops, but
may consist of a cloth or strips of any suitable material.
l designates the ferrule of the mop head that is litted to the handle A and secured thereto by any suitable means such as screws la. The terrule is provided with a screw thread 2 and terminates at its outer end in a bell shaped member 3 that extends beyond the end ot the mop handle and at the interior of which are longitudinal grooves 4, (see Figs. III and IV.) In the body of the ferrule and extending in alinement with the grooves 4 are longitudinal slots 5.
6 designates a draw loop that is operable in the grooves t and slots 5 and the closed end of which is adapted to project beyond the bell shaped member of the mop head errule to receive the swab B which is passed therethrough while the draw loop is in an extended position to permit the ready insertion of the swab through the loop. draw loop is provided at its inner ends with outwardly projecting arms 7 which extend laterally through the slots 5 in the errule 1.
S is a carrier ring loosely fitted to the terrule l so that it may be moved longitudinally on said ierrule and which is provided with perforated ears 9 through which the arms 7 ot the draw loop may be passed after they have been extended across the body of the ring at its upper edge, the ends ot the arms being preferably bent upwardly in engagement with the outer edges of said ears subsequent to the passage ot the arms through the ears.
10 is a draw nut fitted to the terrule l and preferably provided with wings ll by which it may be readily turned upon said ferrule. This draw nut is adapted to operate against the carrier ring 8 for the" purpose of imparting outward movement to said ring and the draw loop fitted thereto.
In the practical use ot our mop, the mop swab is introduced into the draw loop 6 when the draw loop is in an extended position to which position it is readily moved by drawing it outwardly subsequent to rotating the draw nut l0 upon the terrule to move it toward the outer or lower end of the mop head. Then when the swab has been introduced into the draw loop 6 said draw loop is moved inwardly or upwardly to carry the top portion ot the swab to the bell shaped member 3 of the mop head terrule, a movement that is readily accomplished either by a pull upon the carrier ring 8 or by the rotation ot the draw nut l0 upon the ferrule to move it in an outward or upward direction. After the swab has been brought to the bell shaped member of the terrule it is drawn tightly thereto by rotation of the draw nut l0, with the result of causing said draw nut to impart outward or upward movement to the carrier ring and draw loop whereby the swab is spread outwardly due to its engagement with the bell shaped member at the end of the mop head terrule.
The only action necessary in substituting a new swab for one previously in use is that of rotating the draw nut 10 upon the mop head `ferrule to move it outwardly or downwardly thereon, and permit the draw loop to be extended in order that the old swab may be withdrawn from the loop and a new one inserted thereinto, after which the new swab is secured in the mop head by the operation of the parts as previously explained.
directly vthrough Said ferrule, and means. Whereb said draw loop may be moved longitudinal'y ofsaid ferrulesoas to .pull the draw'loop`-into' the latter.
slidable swab receiving draw loop extending directly throughy said 'erruflen a carrier: ring loosely fitted to. said ferrule andi to which said drav7 loopisconnected,v and means operable` upon said ferrule whereby said carrier ring-' may' be.l movedf longitudinally of said .ferrule sov as; tol pull thel draw loopl into the latter;
3. A mop head comprising a screw thread. ed'. ferrule,aa slidable sWabreceivin-g draw loop extending directly.- through .said ferrule, carrier rinfg' .loose-ly tted to said .errule and vto Whichsaid draw loop is connected, and ascrew threaded Adraw nutA operable on 'saidfeirulle and'adalpte'dto"move said car- Igier ring longitudinally of said ferrule so as to' pull the draw loop into the latter.
