DENTAL TOOTH-CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 9, 1909.
Application filed. February 20, 1908. Serial No. 479,108.
PER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Shreveport, in the parish of Caddo and State of Louisiana, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Dental Tooth-Clamps, of which the following is aspecification.
This invention is an improvement in dental appliances being in the nature of a clamp for application to a tooth and having means for holding cotton rolls or napkins, such as used by dentists in keeping moisture away from atooth while filling the latter, and also provides means for supporting a mirror; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions, and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawingsFigure 1 is a perspective View of the invention as in use. Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof. Fig. 3 is a side view of the device. Fig. 4 is a plan View of the bow strap, and Fig. 5 is an edge view of the invention as in use.
In carrying out the invention I provide a clamp A in the form of a bow strap which may be bent into curved form from the flat plate shown in Fig. 4:, which latter may be stamped or otherwise produced. lVhen bent into curved form the clamp forms an approximately circular ring split or separated at- A to form the clamp jaws A", which latter may be incurved as best shown in Fig. 4:, to fit upon the opposite sides of a tooth when applied as shown in Fig. 1.
At its upper side the clamp A is provided with an upwardly projecting lug B, which rests against the outer side of a tooth in the use of the invention to prevent the cheek from pressing the clamp inwardly out of place, and I also provide the clamp A with a holder C for a mirror D, the said holder 0, and the lug or projection B being out from the band as shown in Fig. 4, and the holder C being a spring and binding frictionally upon the stem D of the mirror, so the latter ma be held in an desired aosition see' Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawing.
Adjacent to its ends I provide the clamp with inwardly projecting lugs E, on opposite sides of the jaws A and which may be utilized in spreading the aws in placing the clamp on and removing it from a tooth, and on its outer side adjacent to the said lugs E are provided lugs F on opposite sides of the jaws A and designed to hold the cotton rolls or napkins when the clamp is applied to a tooth as will be understood from the drawmg.
it is preferred to cut the lugs E and F from the body of the plate as shown in Fig.
at of the drawing.
lil anifestly, the device can be used on eithenthe upper or lower jaw by simply changing the mirror, and the clamp being made of a steel or other resilient band of suitable dimensions, say from one quarter to one and one-quarter inches in diameter and one-thirty-second of an inch in thickness, will operate to securely hold the cotton rolls or napkins in position, and also support the mirror when applied in use as before described.
I claim-- I. A dental appliance substantially as herein described comprising a bow clamp, jaws at its ends to engage on opposite sides of a tooth, cut out portions adjacent to said ends and forming inwardly projecting lugs to facilitate the opening of the jaws, outwardly projecting lugs for holding absor ent material, a projecting lug to engage a tooth in the jaw opposite the one being clamped, and also having a holder for a mirror, and a mirror held therein, substantially as set forth.
A dental appliance comprising a bow clamp adapted at its ends to engage on opposite sides of a tooth, and an outwardly projecting lug or portion midway between the ends of the clamp and adapted to engage alongside a tooth in the opposite jaw to prevent the displacement of the clamp by the inward pressure of the cheek, substantially as set forth.
A. dental appliance provided with a bow clamp provided midway between its ends with circumferentially extending slits, separating tongues, one of which is bent outwardly to form a lug for preventing the displacement of the clamp when applied for use, and the other of which is bent to form a mirror holder, substantially as set forth.
4;. A dental appliance comprising a bow clamp adapted at its ends to engage on opposite sides of a tooth, and provided adjacent the said ends and also midway between its ends with circumferentially extending slits, separating tongues bent to operate substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
5. A dental appliance having means to the bowed clamp, and a tongue midway beengage a tooth in one jaw, and means to eX- tween the ends of the bow clamp and adapttend between said jaw and the other jaw, ed to cooperate with a tooth in the opposite and provided with means to engage a tooth jaw from that engaged by the ends of the 5 in said other jaw to prevefit the displace- I bow clamp, substantially as set forth.
ment of the app iance by t e inward ressure of the cheek, substantially as set f rth. GEORGE ALBERT HARPER 6. A dental appliance comprising a bowed Vitnesses:
clamp adapted at its ends to engage a tooth I V. A. ADAMS, 10 in one jaw, tongues adjacent to said ends of V. E. BLISS.
