To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jol-1N H. FnL'rHoUsnN, a citizen of the United States, residing at York, in the county of York and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Turbines, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to turbines of that class embodying wicket gates, and has particulail reference to means for operating a gate ring and to the antifrictional support of the ring or to the disposition of the ring relatively to its support to obviate contact of the inner periphery of the ring with the surface which it surrounds and thus render the adjustment of the ring or its movement around the support therefor at all times free and unretarded and whereby wear on the ring is reduced to a minimum.
Gate rings as heretofore commonly applied have had the inner portions thereof directly bearing and movable on a supporting means such as a portion of the housing' or casing containing the gates. The accumulation of sediment and grit between the inner portion of the rings and their supporting means has resulted in a frictional binding and wearing of the ring with many disadvantages, particularly in the energy required for operation and the impositive or irregular movement of the ring after wear thereof, and the gates as a consequence' have an unequal opening and closing movement imparted thereto by the actuation of the ring.
The present invention overcomes the disadvantages heretofore experienced and as above noted and the actuation of the ring results in an equal operation of the gates.
In the drawings: Figure l is a transverse vertical section through a portion of a turbine organization particularly showing the gate ring and operating mechanism therefor, embodying the features of the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of a turbine ring and operating mechanism showing a modification of the invention. Fig. t is an edge elevation of the devices shownY by Fig. 3.
The numeral l designates a turbine shaft centrally disposed in relation to they wheel casing 2 in which are mounted a plurality of gates 3 connected by suitable means as at 4l to a gate operating ring 5.
The improved features of the invention may be applied to a turbine having either an upright or perpendicular plane l'of rotation or a horizontal plane of rotation. The connection as shownbetween'the ring 5 and the gates 3 embodies sliding blocks 6 and connecting pins 7. It will be understood, however, that the invention is not directed to the connection between the gates and the ring and various devices may be'used for this purpose. As particularly shown by Fig. l, retention clips or small plates 8 are used in some instances for maintaining `the ring in position around the portion of the casing to which it is applied, these clips or plates being alternately secured to the ring and casing and obstructing any displacement of the ring by thrust pressure that may be imposed thereon. The ring is supported for free oscillation or partial rotation around the casing, and the inner periphery 9 of the ring is held clear of the contiguous portion of the casing over which it moves and is therefore free of frictional resistance or impediment to ready operation that would be set up by grit or sediment lodging or accumulating between the inner periphery of the said ring and the part of the turbine over which it operates.
The ring 5 is sustained in its freely movable application by combined supporting and actuating means that may be indenitely varied without departing from the principle of operation involved. For the purpose of practical demonstration, two forms of the combined supporting and actuating means for the ring are shown in the accompanying drawings, but it will be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise mechanical devices illustrated for accomplishing the result sought to be attained, as the essential feature of the invention is the support of the ring for operating the gates clear of the part of the turbine to which it is applied and suitable means for oscillating the ring in opposite directions to control or effect opening and closing movements of the gates.
In the form of the mechanism shown by Figs. l and 2, a ring actuating rod or shaft l0 passes through an outstanding bearing arm or projection ll and an eccentric or coupling disk 12, and between the eccentric 12 and an attaching ear or projection 13 eX- tending from the ring 5 is a motion transmitting means or link connection 14 which may be of any suitable form. On the turbine frame or casing, and preferably held by a supporting arm or analogous device 15 projecting from the said. frame or casing, is a rocking lever or bell-crank 16 having arms 17 and keyed on a rock-shaft 18 movably mounted in the arm 15 and a rear bearing 1.9, as clearly shown by Fig. 2. Between the eccentric 12 and the arm 15 and lever 16 an attaching ear or projection 20 extends outwardly from the ring 5 and terminally attached to said latter projection is a motion transmitting "means or link 21 of any suitable form, but in the present instance consisting of a pair of bars applied against opposite faces of the projection 20 and also attached, to the nearest arm 17 of the rocking lever 1G. A motion transmitting means or link 21Z1 is also movably attached to the projection 2() and to the eccentric 12, the motion transmitting means 21 and 21 being connected by the same fulcrum means to the projection 2O and the terminal of the transmitting means 21 is expanded or has such dimensions as to embrace the contiguous terminal of the transmitting means 21a. Movably attached to the remaining arm 17 of the rocking lever or bell-crank 1G is a motion transmitting means or link 22 which is also secured to an ear or projection 23 extending from the ring 5 at a point directly opposite or in alinement with the projection 20.
lhe motion transmitting means 1st, 21, 21n and 22 operate not only as devices for shifting the ring 5 in opposite directions, but also as a sustaining means for holding the ring in a free condition relatively to the turbine casing or frame. If the turbine is disposed in an upright or perpendicular position, the transmitting means lil and 21a, which connect the eccentric 12 with the projections 18 and 20, center the ring 5 hori- Zonta] ly and the transmitting means or links 21 and 22 connected to the arms 17 and the projections 2O and 23, respectively, center the ring vertically. The transmitting means or links specified may be of the single or double bar type, the double bar type being preferred because the terminals can be conveniently applied to the several projections and the rocking lever and arranged to straddle the said projections and lever. The exact construction of the transmitting means or links, however, is not controlling as to the effective operation of the ring. rihe rod or shaft 10 is also shown at one side of the turbine organization, but this is not essential as the eccentric disk 12 and the said rod or shaft 10 may be positioned at other points around the turbine organization, or reversed, as the position of the turbine and the rod or shaft in turbine organizations already in use and to which it is desired to apply the improved gate ring and motion transmitting means may require.
It will be seen that the ring as shown by Fig. 1 is equipped with means for accommodating a reversal of the application of the motion transmitting means, as an extra attaching ear or projection 211 is shown on the left similar to the ear or projection 13 on the right.
The most essential feature of the invention is the application of the gate operating ring 5 in such manner that it will be supported equally with relation to the part of the turbine over which it is shifted or oscillated without touching such part, and to utilize the supporting means as a motion transmitting means with relation to a motion imparting center, such for instance, as the rod. or shaft 10.
The same principle of operation of the ring is illustrated by Figs. 3 and t, and the mechanism as shown by the latter figures embodies two bell- cranks 25 and 26 on opposite sides having their upper extremities engaged by ring shifting means or rods 27 and 28, the lower arms of the said bell-cranks being connected to diametrically opposite portions of the ring 5 by rods 29. These devices operate directly as oscillating means for the ring, and the counter-supporting means in this instance consist of rods 30 attached to diametrically opposite portions of the ring in planes at right angles to the points of attachment of the said rods 29 to the ring. The outer ends of the rods 30 are movably secured to the opposite terminals of an equalizing lever 31 centrally fulcrumed as at 32' to a support or projection 33 extending outwardly from the turbine frame or casing. the parts to which they are attached operate similarly to the motion transmitting devices disclosed by Figs. 1 and 2 and are equivalent in all respects to the first described devices. The position of the rods 29, the bell-cranks 25 and 2G, the rods 30 and Vlever 31 may also be changed with relation to the ring 5, and these parts, and particularly the rods 29 and 30, serve as motion transmitting means, and the lever 31 may be said to be a rocker arm having a function similar to the rocker arm 16 heretofore described.
The gates, as shown by Figs. 1 and 2, and the means for shifting or oscillating the ring and including the prime actuating rod or shaft, either in single or double form, are represented in the positions they will occupy when the gates are half open, and it will be understood that by operating either one or both of the rods or shafts, as shown by Figs. 1 and 3, in opposite directions, the gates will be fully opened or closed and the ring 5 regularly oscillated through the medium of the motion transmitting devices, the latter operating on the principle of the parallelogram of forces. The improved ring and operating means hereinbefore explained may be readily applied to turbines of the ring operated type The rods 29 and 30 and' now in use and materially decrease the energy required :tor operating the gates by eliminating the friction encountered in rings as heretofore applied, and in View of the durability and positive action of the ring owing to the minimized Wear, the gates will be maintained in reliable operating condition and sensitively responsive to the actuation of the ring Without lost motion.
What is claimed is:
l. The combination with a turbine having gates, of a ring operatively connected to the gates and loosely suspended clear otl contact With any part of the turbine over which it moves, and means for shifting the ring in opposite directions around the turbine to correspondingly move the gates.
2. The combination With a turbine having gates, of a ring operatively connected to the gates, and means serving the double function of shifting the ring and suspending the same clear of any part of the turbine over which it is mounted.
3. The combination With a turbine having gates, of a ring applied over and movable around a portion of the turbine and operatively connected to the gates, the ring being suspended and held clear of all parts of the turbine over Which it moves, means connected to diiferent portions of the ring for suspending and shitting the latter in opposite directions, and prime motion imparting means coperating with said suspending and shifting means.

The combination With a turbine having gates, of a ring movably mounted over a portion of the turbine and operatively connected to the gates, means for suspending the ring clear of any part of the turbine over which it moves and for actuating the said ring and connected to different parts ot' the latter, and prime means for operating the said suspending and actuating means to equally apply a. shitting force to different portions of the ring.
5. The combination With a turbine having gates, of a ring connected to the gates for operating the latter and supported Wholly out of contact with the part of the turbine over which it is mounted, motion transmitting means connected to the ring and holding the said ring clear of the part of the turbine over Which it is mounted, and means for actuating the said motion transmitting means to shift the ring in opposite directions.
G. The combination With a turbine having gates, of a ring connected to the gates for operating the latter and supported clear ot' the part of the turbine over which it moves, and means for shifting the ring in opposite directions and serving as the support for the ring.
