To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that 1, DAVID VALENTINE, a subject. of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Valve-Gear Steam-Engines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to a device for arresting the operation of a steam engine when required at points distant from the engine. Accidents are liable to happen to machines or to operatives, which makes it desirable and often necessary to stop the engine as quickly as possible to save lives or avoid the destruction of machines.
The object of this invention is to so connect an operative part of the valve mechanism of a steam-engine with an armature which may be attracted by a magnet that on closing an electric circuit at any convenient point the movement of the operative part of the valve mechanism may be arrested and the engine stopped.
To this end the invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction and combination, with a part of the valve mechanism of a steam-engine,of an armature, magnets forming part of an electric circuit, and switches 10- cated at desired points, whereby the closing of a switch causes the armature to be held by the magnets and the part of the valve mechanism to be arrested, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.
In illustrating the application of my invention I have elected to describe the same in connection with a steam-engine of the Corliss type.
Figure l is a side view of part of an engine provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a side view of part of the valve mechanism, showing one member provided with an armature which, as is indicated in broken lines,
when near the electromagnets may be ar-' rested. Fig. 3 is a side view of the member provided with the armature.
In the drawings, a a indicate the segment, connected with the stems of rocking valves located at the opposite ends of the engine-cylinder A; b b, the dash-pot rods,connected with the segment a a; c, the latch member, pivotally connected with the segment a; d d, the swinging arms, connected by the rod 6 with each other and by the rod c with the eccentric; f f, the heel-piece, connected with and carried by the swinging arms at d; ff, rods connecting the valve mechanism with the governor, by which the cut-off is regulated.
The movement of the valve mechanism is shown in Fig. 2 in solid lines in one position and in broken lines in the other position. The swinging arm d has a continuous swinging movement imparted to it while the engine is in operation through the eccentric.
At each swing of the arm at the heel-piece f encounters the latch member 0, pivotally connected with the segment a, to swing the seg ment and rock the valve connected to the segment until the latch member 0 slips ofi from the heel-piece, when the parts resume their original position controlled through the rod 6 by the dash-pot.
To the latch members 0 c I connect the armatures g g, and close to the end of the movements of the armatures I support one or more electromagnets h h. These magnets I connect with the electric conductors h h, extending through the works or manufactory, the machines of which are operated by the steamengine, place into one of the arms of the open circuit a battery 77 or other source of electric energy, and at as many places as desired I place the switches i 11 and contact-posts i 01, so that when the emergency arises the circuit maybe closed, the magnets energized, and the latch member 0 of the valve mechanism held in the inoperative position to stop the engine.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a steam engine, the combination with a moving member of the valve-operating mechanism, of a segment connected with the valve, a latch member pivoted to said segment, an armature secured to said latch memher, an eleotromagnet, an open electric circuit connected with the magnet, and switches in the circuit located at a distance from the prime motor, whereby the closing of one of the switches closes thecircuit, energizes the magnet and arrests the segment when the armature passes into the field 0t influence of the magnet, as described.
2. In a prime motor, the combination with a segment connected with the valve, a latch member pivotally supported on the segment,
swinging arm, the segment a connected with the valve of the steam-engine, and the mem ber c pivoted to the segment a, of the armature g on the member 0, the electromagnets h, the electric conductors h h, the battery 72 and the switches e i adapted to close the circuit; whereby, on the closing of the circuit, the member a is held out of engagement with the heel-piece f to stop the supply of steam to the engine and arrest the same,as described.
