To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that l, HENRY Lone, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Belting; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to improvements in belting, and more particularly to that type of belts which are circular in crossscction, the invention aiming, primarily, to provide an exceedingly strong and durable belt which may be constructed at a comparatively low cost. To this end, the belt comprises an outer covering formed of a single strip of raw-hide folded longitudinally upon itself, and having its edges stitched together, and a filling disposed within the tube formed by said strip consisting of one or more narrow strips of raw-hide, the filling being held in place by the stitching which passes therethrough and through the cover.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which corresponding parts, or features, as the case may be, are designated by the same reference numerals throughout both views.
Of the said drawings, Figure l is a sectional perspective view of a portion of a belt constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of a modified form of belt.
The belt is shown in said drawings, as comprising an outer member or cover l, and a filling 2. The member l is formed of a single strip of raw-hide which is folded longitudinally from end to end, and has its side edges stitched together, as indicated by the numeral 3, the stitching passing through the iilling which is thus held in place. In its simplest form, as shown in Fig. l, the filling consists of a single narrow flat strip of rawhide. Where a belt of greater cross sectional area is desired, the filling in such case consists of a pair of juxtaposed strips of rawhide, this construction being illustrated in Fig. 2.
After the cover and filling have been stitched together, the requisite cylindrical shape is imparted to the belt, thus formed, by passing it between a pair of grooved rollers, it being noted that the longitudinal edges of the cover are spaced apart and that a part of the periphery of the belt is formed by said edges and by the outer longitudinal edge of the filling, irrespective of whether the latter be composed of one or more strips.
Owing to the fact that the entire belt is constructed of raw-hide, its life is prolonged to a considerable extent, the durability of such material being generally known. The filling is held completely against displacement and is at the same time, joined to the outer member of the belt by means of the stitching, which as above stated, passes through the filling and through said outer member.
lVhat is claimed is:
l. As a new article of manufacture, a laminated cylindrical belt for sewing machines, comprising a fiat filling of raw-hide, and a raw-hide cover folded longitudinally upon itself to receive the filling and being stitched thereto, said cover having its longitudinal edges arranged in spaced relation to each other, said edges and the outer longitudinal edge of the filling forming a portion of the periphery of the belt.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a laminated cylindrical belt comprising a raw-hide cover including a pair of spaced portions, and a filling of raw-hide disposed between said portions and stitched thereto, one of the longitudinal edges of the filling forming a portion of the periphery of the belt.
