Description

JAMES W. WATKINS, OF ZANESVILLE, OHIO, 'ASSIGNOR 01E ONE-HALF TO JOSEPH 'r.
ADAMS. OF TERRE HAU'IE, INDIANA.
Patented Nov. 9, 1909.
LUBRICANT.
939,646. Specification of Letters Patent. No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JAMES W. VVATmNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Zanesvill'e, in the county of Mu'skingum and State of .Ohio, have-invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Lubricants, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce a composition which will serve as a lubricant having cooling qualities so that, when applied to hot boxes in railroad rolling stock, the temperature of the bearing journal will be rapidly reduced.
The composition comprises (7.) Italian castile soap; which I have found by experiment to be the only Soap, at present known to me, capable of producing desired results. The soap forms a body for the lubricant and this particular soap appears to possess cooling ingredients which no common soap contains.
(2) Flake graphite; possessing the well known characteristic of smoothing the journals and bearings. I find that flaked graphite is preferable to stick or powdered graphite as it appears, by tests, to wear longer.
(3) Ammonia (about a 10% solution) which serves to cut and reduce any accumulation of gum on the journals and absorb heat from the journals.
(4) A mineral machine standing high temperatures. i
(5) Tallow; used in somewhat varying quantities in order to vary the consistency of the compound.
oil capable of (6) Common salt; which gives to the compound a heat absorbing value.
' ess, of water.
formed by bringing to Application filed January 14, 1809. Serial No. 472,341.
(7) Water for dissolving the soap.
I find that, for producing approximately one gallon of the compound, the following proportions and ingredients are desirable: 1% pounds of Italian castile soap, J,- pound fiaked graphite, 1 gill of ammonia, 2 quarts of heavy machine oil, 9; pound tallow, 1 ound common salt, and 3 pints, more or The water is heated and the soap dissolved therein and the tallow, machine oil, ammonia and graphite added and thoroughly stirred so as to make a homoge neous mixture. \Vhen cool the mixture is applied in the ordinary manner of a lubricant. In practice it has been-found that, when so applied to heated journals or bearings, the temperature will be rapidly reduced although the parts he continued 111 operation. Y
I claim as my invention:
1. A temperature reducing lubricant ether soap, graphite, ammonia, mineral mac ine oil, tallow, commonsalt and water.
2. A temperature reducing lubricant formed by bringing together Italian castile soap, flaked aphite, ammonia, mineral machine oil, tal ow, common salt and water, in substantially the proportions specified.
, -In witness whereof, I, have hereunto set my hand and seal at Zanesville, Ohio, this 8th day of January, A. D. one thousand nine hundred and nine.
