Be it knownT-that I, ,.T11oMAs POJAR, a citizen pf the United States, residing at Dodge, 1n the county of Dodge and State of Nebraska, haveinvented a new and useful DrafoTongue of which the following is a specification.

This invention has relation to draft tongues, and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts, as hereinafter shown and described.

The object of the invention is to provide a drai'ttongue in the form of a unitary structure, which is adapted to be easily and read- 1ly applied to the "axle and hounds of a wagon running-gear of the usual pattern.

In; connection with the tongue means is provided for equalizing or distributing the draft strain between the members of tandem teams of draft animals, and, at the same time, provision is made whereby the draft strain or pull from the several teams is applied to the tongue at one and the same point. WVith the above object in view the tongue includes a body. portion, and a stub portion, which portions are connected together by side plates having a ulley journale'd between them and lying etween the said portions. A bracket is slidably mounted upon the said side plates and is provided with means for retaining a double-tree. An iron is fixed .to the forward end of the body portion of the tongue, and a pulley is journaled therein. A chain is attached at one end to the said bracket and passes around the pulley between the side plates, then over the pulley of the tip iron of the tongue; and to the forward end of the said chain a tree may be connected. Breast chains are attacl" d to the tip iron of the tongue, and a chain is connected with the intermediate portion of the tongue and may be used to hold the tongue at a desired angle. e

.The tongue includes a main or body por-' tion 1, and a secondary or stub portion 2. The said portions are in alinement one with the other. adjacent ends of the tongue portions 1 and 2 1s a pulley 4. A bracket 5 is slidably mounted upon the Slates 3, and is provided with depending si e portions 6, which lie flat against the outer faces of the plates 3, and the lower portions of the depending parts 6 are connected together by. a bolt 7, which passes transversely under the rear portion of the part 1' of the tongue, and under the lower edges of the plates 3. The bracket 5 is provided with a shelf portion 8, upon whicl is mounted a clip 9. A donble-tree 10 is mounted upon the bracket 5 and is pivotally secured between the clip .9 and the shelf portion 8 of the said," bracket. A chain 11 is connected at one end to the tongue portion 1 ata point intermediate of the ends thereof, and may be employed by attaching its other end to a relatively fixed portion of a wagon body or frame for holding the tongue at a desired angle. A pulley 15 is journaled between the flanges 14 and lies below the forward end of the tongue portion 1. A draft chain 15 is connected at one end to the rear portion of the bracket 5 and passes around the pulley Aand extends along the under side of the tongue portion 1 and res.s upon the upper portion of the pulley 15 between the flanges 14 and the tip iron 12. A tree 16, is attached to the forward end of the chain 15.

From the above description it is obvious that when teams are connected with the trees 10 and 16 and move in a forward direction, the draft strain or pull is distributed or equalized between the teams through the instrumentality of the nects the bracket 5 with the tree 16, as indicated.

It will also be seen that when the lead team turns to one side or the other, by reason of the flexibility of the chain 15, the draft strain in a lateral direction will be applied directly to-the tip iron 12, and, consequently, in making a turn, the tongue portion 1 is guided by the lead team as well as the wheel team.
